SOLVED: Children's/YA > SOLVED. Children's chapter book or possibly YA. Read in the 80s. About siblings that are left on their own. I don't remember why. Oldest tries to keep them off the radar until one sibling has a medical emergency with a leg injury. [s]

Kris | 12 comments I'm pretty sure I read this in the 80s. It could be YA but seems more like a chapter book for slightly younger than YA kids. I don't remember why these siblings were on their own but they are hiding. Possibly in a barn and the oldest sister is taking care of them. I remember her making sure they brushed their teeth with toothpaste on their finger. At some point, one of the kids is punctured in the leg with (I think) a pitchfork and she doesn't want to go to the hospital and draw attention to their situation but she looks at the wound and does not like the way it looks all drawn in and red and decides they need help.

Kris | 12 comments Thank you for replying so quickly but unfortunately, it's not the Box Car Children.

Merannda It's not Homecoming by Cynthia Voight? One kid gets a head injury but not leg.

Google Books has a snippet preview of Under the Haystack by Patricia A. Engebrecht - Ayshe's suggestion. You might get lucky searching for keywords:
Quotes from the book:
- ... staring in disbelief at a pitchfork that stuck into her thigh.
Sandy froze, horror rising up in her and escaping in a short gasp. Her stomach knotted, and she thought she was going to be sick.
