What I remember is a moody book for kids around 12 about friendship and difficult home lives. I would have read it around 2004. I am pretty sure it had a yellow cover with the top of a frogs head at the bottom looking out at you -- not cartoony. The vibe was sort of like Pictures of Hollis Woods. Some of these details could be misremembered or borrowed from other books but I hope it's enough to get an answer!
