LTJ (ltj81) | 2005 comments I read this a while ago and it was my first ever "splatterpunk" novel and my goodness, what a wild, crazy, fun ride! This rocked and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did :-)

Netanella | 575 comments I started reading this late last night, since I'm home sick currently and was amped up on cold medicine and too many naps during the day.

I will just say that I was sucked in to Room 6 of this lovely, memory-laden hotel and couldn't get out until I hit about 39% into the book. I had to put the book down deliberately, because I didn't want to fall asleep with visions of Candy Raines and her powerful talents in my head!

Daylight reading only today! I will not have dreams of whatever the hell is about to go down in Room 6.

I have a sinking feeling I know what it is, however. All of the signs point toward the woom.

Kenneth McKinley | 1717 comments Mod
Just finished. Damn. Nicely done, Duncan.

Without giving away spoilers, can you tell us a little how WOOM came about? Did all of these stories come to you while writing WOOM or were any of these conceived earlier and then you reworked them a bit to fit into WOOM?

message 16: by LTJ (new) - rated it 4 stars

LTJ (ltj81) | 2005 comments @Netanella: I hope you feel better soon and happy reading! LoL you are in for a doozy with "WOOM" as it's only going to get better...

(I'm afraid of Woom, too, but I've loved many of Duncan's other books!)

Pisces51 Duncan, you have made a new fan. I thought POUND was laced with wry humor, well plotted, and really lightened up a disgustingly dark topic (bullying). Review to follow but I wanted to say kudos on your writing skills, pacing strategy, and rendering a sad topic much less dark than it could have been.

Pisces51 Just noticed I posted in the wrong place. SORRY Duncan and group members alike. So embarrassin'

Nick Vallina (MisterGhostReads) (mister_ghost) | 14 comments I have a deep affection for this bonkers book as it takes place in Buffalo, New York. I ALSO take place in Buffalo, New York!

Thanks for ruining my city, Duncan <3

Iris | 5 comments Just finished this one in one sitting—couldn’t put it down and had to know what happened in the end. I was disgusted by some scenes, but intrigued at the same time. Looking forward to discuss this book with you all!

Amanda "Coffin Critiques" (coffincritiques) | 54 comments So sure, this worked out in a way I thought I expected with some twists here and there, but it came together...uhm nicely...not in a literal sense obviously but it tied together well. Better than most of this type. I just still have such a hard time with extreme horror, I couldn't get through Cows and I almost didn't finish Gone to See the River Man although I did, like it might not be the best way to explain but it was intriguing. This, even more so. I get slashers and splatter but this, like Gone to See the River Man is deeper, darker and hits way harder. It's not just for the gross out but for the shock and discomfort overall. But there's more, it's always more. I just finished this at 2:30 AM, and I want to cry with relief because it was painful in so many ways. Mr. Ralston, the scene with the bathtub, that genuinely made me cry. I know what I get from these, feeling horrified in ways most novels cant anymore from reading so many. But what does everyone else get when they read something like this? Also, I loved the writing itself, just as a side note. It's done very well. Just feels like my inside hurt after a read like this so I'm curious where we all come at extreme horror from. This is no way a bad experience, I mean, it is but not because I didn't like it haha, it's exactly the experience I wanted from it. Like how I want to be scared by ghost stories, this makes me want to peel my skin off after. Thank you for sharing with us!

Duncan Ralston (userbits) | 124 comments Hey, folks! I'm in Costa Rica right now, just so happened I left for vacation just around the beginning of the group read! I appreciate all the comments and I will try to respond to individual comments very shortly when I get good internet reception! For some reason the app won't allow me to do individual quote replies. Thank you all for reading and commenting!

Pisces51 I finished reading WOOM last night and was duly impressed with the author's talent. It was original and dark as a night without stars. This was an excellent choice for a group read and to introduce me to a talent I did not know. Review to follow!

Pisces51 I am posting my review of "WOOM" today. I really enjoyed it. Loved the inclusion of The Story Behind The Novel. Looking forward to reading the prequel you are brainstorming. I am a new fan.

Very cool to hear! Still tinkering with those sequel and prequel concepts. Was just messing around with one today, I think it's gonna be a lot of fun, while very different.

Thank you, Ken! I brainstormed the entire novella in a single morning before work, and fired it off to Matt Shaw that same morning. Every story is exactly as I jotted it down. I think the only addition is the Candy Rains/Juicy story, which I felt was necessary for a little comic relief up front.

Pisces51 Thank you for your comments Duncan. Can hardly wait for the next book of yours we are reading which is scheduled for next month.

Imma a weee bit late but I finished this book a week ago I think but it was so good!!! I definitely loved the story telling and how it was all woven to present day! Good writing with this one. Although, I’m a bit biased since I enjoy your books Duncan! I bought puzzle house and can’t wait to read it.

Thank you, Char! I hope you enjoy Puzzle House! People have been begging me for a sequel for that one, so I may have to cook something up soon. :)
