There are some things I dislike in the show - for instance, the explicit sex and brutal violence scenes, which I personally do not think were all that necessary - but the dialogues and characters are really captivating. So much that I really wish to read every book that served as inspiration for the series.

Some of them I have already read, but maybe you haven't, so they deserve the discussion too. Here are some for start, the reading order can be changed if you wish so - books from five to seven are additions, real penny dreadfuls , that I might not wish to read that much, but still, let them be, if you wish to read them. If you have some books to add, post your suggestions here!

01 - Dracula
02 - Frankenstein
03 - The Picture of Dorian Gray
04 - The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
05 - Penny Dreadful Vol. 1: Wagner The Wehr-Wolf/Varney The Vampire/The Mysteries of London or mayhaps Les Mystères de Paris
06 - The Memoirs of Detective Vidocq
07 - Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street

I've just seen the last episode of the second season, and I am sorry to say I disliked the entire season so much that I have no further interest for it. From interesting it went to disgusting, not so much for darkness as for depravity. Everything was so wrong and irrational from the start, as if the writers were different and went only for shocking just to see how far they can go until the viewers say enough of this gibberish.

I won't give up on reading the books above. I've already read the number 3 and 4, the first one I am on the way to finish, and the second is definitely on to-read list.

As it is now the book of the month, there's no need to create another thread for Frankenstein, so for those interested, just follow these two links:

Frankenstein - The book and the movies of September 2015

Actually, the same thing applies to the number 3 and 4:

The Picture of Dorian Gray - The book and the movies of November 2012

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - Quick Read of May 2012

Alana (alanasbooks) | 730 comments Honestly, I have heard of the series, but had no idea it was based on any books and have no idea what it's about. Is it a books series? Or just an ongoing series based on some classic horror stories?
