a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 675 comments This book was my favourite in the nominations and I'd like to join.
Let's see how my schedule proceeds further down the month.

Alyssa Gildea (alyssagildea) | 3 comments I just received this book from my Caffeine & Legends mystery box. Seems I was fated to join this group read! :)

Anna (vegfic) | 10464 comments Alyssa, I see you're currently reading the Paladin series! Don't miss our Paladin discussion! :D

Series: World of the White Rat by T. Kingfisher

Sorry for the off topic everyone, but Allison is right, it was destiny! :D

Alyssa Gildea (alyssagildea) | 3 comments ...and I am not one to deny destiny!

Is there a set schedule we'll be reading it or just everyone on their own time? I tried to look through the rules and such but didn't find a specific mention of this.

@Anna - I am and I am loving it! Thanks for the link!

This one started out a bit dark for my tastes but ended up being a great read.

I started it. I really enjoyed the first chapter. Felt like I’d been transported somewhere new and interesting.

The only thing throwing me off is the way the years are labeled. I hope at some point it will explain the context.

Alyssa Gildea (alyssagildea) | 3 comments I started today and made it through the first couple of chapters. Very interesting and promising start! The only thing throwing me was the switch to present tense in chapter 2. It looks like the author keeps to this throughout the rest of the book? I was expecting it to be a short clip at Chono’s viewpoint.

Eric Ganz I have started the book and it is promising.
On audible, it is very useful to refer to the PDF for the unusual names
Unfortunately, however, the audio has a buzzing distortion, which is distracting…

Trude Hell (trudehell) | 46 comments I read this book on my Kindle. There are three maps, but too small to give any direction east or west or anywhere. I can read Ma’kess System, Kator System and Teros System and understand that they are parts of the Treble. Other than that, I don’t know if I should bother complaining about useless maps or not.

We meet Esek the Burning One. And she sounds cruel, but we understand she was brought up in a cruel world, where mercy is as distant as the smallest stars seen from our present Earth.

Despite the hostile atmosphere and tint of evil in the first chapter, the writing and style caught my favour and I look forward to reading on. Since writing this prohibits me from just that, I’ll stop right now

...the labelling of the years is extremely annoying and makes it extremely difficult to follow the thread of the story. It would have been greatly improved if a reference date was given at the beginning and thereafter a relative time specified - i.e. "two years earlier", "5 years later"... As it is, it seems impossible to have a break in reading without losing your place in the plot.

I agree, Ian. I am about 150 pages in, and I think I finally have the rhythm of things, but I spent a lot of time flipping back to previous chapters to remember what year is was in the past chapter and how it related to the current chapter (and also to remind myself about the characters at first). I’m really glad I am reading the print book because I would be lost listening to the audiobook. I think the story is interesting, though, and I’m enjoying it more as I get further along.

I hope this is explained in the Discuss Everything thread! 😁

Sounds like folks here will be receptive to any complaints I have about maps starting with, Pippashap (mentioned many times) must be on Quietus, but is not on the map...

After poking around online to see if they were nicer versions of them available (No...) i screenshotted mine and uploaded them to Goodreads. In case that helps, they are in the "More Photos" under my profile

Ma'kess System: https://www.goodreads.com/photo/user/...

Bonnie | 1290 comments Through the first three chapters so far. Had to go slowly, flipping to maps and character list. Hopefully can absorb this world and go faster. I like it so far: colony planets, space travel, oppression, ruling families, government structure, interesting characters, intrigue.

Are their years the same, or close to our years - or shorter? Or maybe each system has their own years?
What is a caster? Things people cast in our world: fishing gear, metal molds, spells...

I picture the clerics like Brother Constant in the Foundation TV show. Looking evil for Esek, or stoic for Chono
:D
