message 1: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina Just opening a new thread because of the authors recent passing and quite a few people mentioning they would like to read him sooner rather than later.
I myself will be reading Nation during April if anyone else would like to join me.
And for others who have read alot of his work this could be a good place to discuss it.

Paul I just finished a reread of Colour of Magic yesterday, it had been quite a while since I had read a Discworld book and I quite enjoyed the revisit. I recently finished Dragons of Crumbling Castle which is a collecton of Childrens short stories he wrote when he was quite young but were only released as a collectio last year.
I really enjoyed Nation when I read it Seraphina. Some of the Pratchett hardcore weren't into it but its such a different type of book for Pratchett. Such an interesting set up for a book though. I wont go into detail for spoiler reasons but I think you'll enjoy it.

message 3: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina What age group would you say his children's book is aimed for Paul? I'm always on the look out for something interesting for my son

message 4: by Paul (new)

Paul The one I just finished would be aimed at maybe 9+ . The Bromeliad Books starting with Truckers would be a little step up from that maybe 12 and then the Jonny Maxwell and Wee Free Men books would be early teen up

message 5: by Colleen (new)

Colleen | 1205 comments I plan on reading The Color of Magic in April.

message 6: by Paul (new)

The humour is great, but the plot is… meandering. It's not as satisfying as some of the later books for that reason. Be warned!

Thank you for the warning.I have to read series in order so I won't let it stop me from reading the next one :)

message 12: by Paul (new)

Paul Definitely worth it. :-) Oddly I think I started at about book 20 or so. :-)

message 13: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina How many books are in discworld?

message 14: by Paul (new)

Paul Raising Steam was the 40 th. With one more definitely on the way and all but confirmed rumours he'd all but finished another one it should finish out at 42.

message 15: by Paul (new)

Paul http://www.lspace.org/books/reading-o...
This reading order guide is very popular on the Pratchett forum.
You can pretty much pick to start on any of the orange books anc work through that sequence rather than going with publucation order

message 16: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina Oh that's a good guide Paul. About 100 pages into nation. It's a bit more serious than I was expecting

message 17: by Paul (new)

Paul Its quite a sad start ans its definitely more serious than a lot of his other works

message 18: by Paul (new)

Paul The guy who does the guide haa been updating it for the lest ten years or so. Fair play to him. Its even available in other languages

message 19: by Paul (new)

Paul Finally reframed this , from Soul Music and of course signed by the great man
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

message 20: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina That's really cool. Terry pratchetts going postal is on sky 2 at the moment. I haven't seen it myself so have it on record

message 21: by Paul (new)

Paul I much preferred Sky doing Going Postal than Colour of Magic. They got the casting so wrong for Colour of Magic but so right in Going Postal. Well worth a watch Seraphina

message 22: by Paul (new)

Paul Terry Pratchetts last Discworld Book officially announced

http://tinyurl.com/o8vo25g

message 23: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina So I gave nation a go and wasn't a massive fan. If you have never read pratchett before this is probably a good one to start on...however if you have read him before and happen to like his humour and quirkiness then I wouldn't recommend it.
I think I'll have to read some discworld to redeem that one.

message 24: by Paul (new)

Paul Sounds like a good plan Seraphina :-)
I'm going to read Wee Free Men next month as the final book is a follow on to it and oddly its one of the few Discworld books I only read once. I love the NAc Mac Feegles as a concept.
Drunken violent fairy folk just doesnt get stale at all :-)

message 25: by Paul (new)

Paul Really hope you enjoy it :-)

message 26: by Allan (new)

Allan Meant to post this yesterday.

May’s Reading group: the novels of Terry Pratchett

http://gu.com/p/47qzt

message 27: by Paul (new)

Paul Nice to see they are going all out. Wonder what will win the second book

message 28: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina Interesting to see what comes across as the people's favourite

message 29: by Allan (new)

Allan Is The Colour of Magic a good introduction to Terry Pratchett?

http://gu.com/p/4856h

message 30: by Paul (new)

Paul I've always recomended starting with a later book in the series , eapecially for non fantasy readers and eventually working back to Colour of Magic. Seems to be a common view on the Pratchett forums.
In other Pratchett related stuff two artworks I ordered a while back arrived today, both pieces by Paul Kidby and signed by Terry.
One is a colour print ov the main watch members from Guards Guards and the second a pencil drawing of Errol the Dragon from the same book.
They are fabulous pieces and I'll be getting them framed soon

Isabella (livbet) | 511 comments I'm a bit anal in this respect, so had to start with the first and work my way through in the correct order. I found COM really hard to get into, but I'm glad I persevered. I'm also glad I read it first because it did its job as an introduction to both the setting and the characters.

message 32: by Paul (new)

Paul Allan posted that one already. Its an interesting topic and I've seen and been part of numerous fan debates on where best to start Discworld. I think theres an awful lot of readers though who couldnt start any series half way in

message 33: by Paul (new)

Paul A really good guide to Discworld from io9 . Very nicely put together http://tinyurl.com/nczhtxb
Well worth a read for both fans or anyone tempted to try the series out

message 34: by Colleen (new)

Colleen | 1205 comments Thanks Paul

message 35: by Paul (new)

Paul No worries. Its as good a synopsis as I've seen.

message 36: by Paul (new)

Paul In case anyone missed it Pratchetts last Discworld book came out at the Weekend.
The Shepherd's Crown should hopefully be a nice signing off for his work.
Sadly The Guardian published an article today calling Terry Mediocre but written by a critic who never read any of his work on the assumption that because its Fantasy its crap.
Typical literary snobbery but surprising the Guardian published such a pointless article.
