The novel is mainly from the girls pov.
The world has been infected with a virus that turns people into zombie-like creatures. The children come from such parents and the research team is trying to find a cure.
The building is attacked by a group of survivors and the girl along with the teacher, the scientist and few other adults manage to leave alive.
They have to survive on their own now.
Sad ending.
The book has a very small romance subplot between the teacher and one of the men. Those too take the role of parents in the girl's life but die at the end.
