Tawnya | 4040 comments Jaclyn, do you think it might be possible to get a "done" button for all of the folders that are specific to changing book information? It would be helpful to have the ones the are complete out of the queue. Most people do not edit their post to say "done" or what-have-you. It is a smart thing to have and makes it visual that we are actually making a difference.

At this minute the "Adding New Books & Editions" folder has 612 pages.
Where as the numbering one has 1223! Probably 75% of those have been finished. The 25% that aren't done are lost in the sea of posts. I picked a few pages at random and none of them had their title changed to show the job was complete.
It would also help when people post requests if the wrong folder.

We can definitely request this change.

I'd be interested to hear from others if they think we should have a single catch-all folder for completed requests (i.e. repurpose the existing [Closed] Added Books/Editions folder) or should we have a different folder for each type of request?

annob [on hiatus] (annob) | 4048 comments Good to hear Jaclyn! My vote is for a single catch-all. My reason is to avoid posts about "you put this thread in the wrong closed folder".

Good point.

Yes, same. & could all threads in that folder be literally closed? I've noticed some librarians send them to closed even if (for example) they are waiting for link for a cover.

annob [on hiatus] (annob) | 4048 comments Carol, if you mean to auto-lock the threads, wouldn't that also prevent the requestors from saying thanks, or argue/ask for clarification when something wasn't edited the way they expected?

Does anyone check those thread though? I thought the idea was that they were finished, so one less thing for librarians to have to worry about.

annob [on hiatus] (annob) | 4048 comments I do go to the closed thread every time I get a notification the requestor posted to it. I guess we work slightly different. I move the threads to Closed when my part is done, and I post to say so, ticking the Done box. Often there is a final reply from the requestor after that, when the thread is already placed in Closed.

How/when to you move yours to Closed?

♪ Kim N (crossreactivity) | 9394 comments I do that too. It's gets the request out of the active folder (so other librarians don't have to deal with it) and I follow up if/when there's a response. Sometimes they never get back to us.

Sorry for the slow reply - I've been out of the office on unexpected family leave.

Thanks for the feedback - I'll request this change, using a catch-all folder.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2298 comments & some clarity about if we are finished with the threads when they go to the archive or if people can still respond please. :)

Jaclyn (jaclyn_w) | 6002 comments Mod
Sure. I believe that a thread should only be archived after the full original request is complete, so if one has a follow up question for a member it should remain in the original folder. This is so that another Librarian can complete the request if the required info (e.g. cover source or image) is provided.

While many Librarians are excellent at following up on their notifications, other notifications can get lost or perhaps that Librarians won't be able to log on for a while for whatever reason. If the request is left in the folder the member can still get help.

Hope that makes sense!

message 16: by gem (new)

gem | 2620 comments Very excited for a single catch-all closed folder for all request forums.

But please do NOT auto-lock the threads when they're moved in there. Often I have some additional chatter with the original poster after I mark a request as Done. For example, maybe they want an adjustment to book data that wasn't specified in the original request, have a question about the Author Program, or just want to say thank you.

If I knew the thread would be auto-locked as soon as I clicked "Done", I would be very hesitant to do so until I was 110% sure the original poster had no other comments. And that means I'd have to set a reminder to dig back through through my threads list after a few days and officially close them as Done. Which IMO makes the entire feature useless. It's meant to help Librarians clear out the folder, not add more reminders/stress/Todo tasks I have to remember to go back and finish.

annob [on hiatus] (annob) | 4048 comments gem wrote: "... please do NOT auto-lock the threads when they're moved in there."

+1, I fully agree with gem's concerns.

The last thing I wish to see are already completed requests pushed to the top of the forum a few days later by adding an unnecessary reply comment just to be able to tick the 'Done' checkbox.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2298 comments Tawnya or Jaclyn could the title of this thread be changed to make it clearer what it is about? I think it is important that all active librarians have a chance to comment on this.

To me a done folder should be done - & an archived folder should be closed & archived. I don't do many adding new books requests, but I am holding on to one now & if no response I'll mark as done in a couple of days.

However, I do do a lot of page counts & I don't see the problem with members having to create a second thread if they don't respond before a librarian closes a thread. We already have members creating multiple threads now.

My understanding is this done folder won't include quotes & awards - which aren't particularly busy folders.

Maybe have having a "done" button in all of the book related folders

message 25: by Tawnya (new)

Tawnya | 4040 comments I think anything where we get requests should be covered, so all of the folders minus "General", "Announcements", "Policies & Practices", and "Questions".

I am surprised everyone is allowed to start threads in "Announcements" and "Policies & Practices". I should think only moderators and staff can make those. We should be allowed to comment, but not to create.

As stated earlier the "Genre" folder just needs to go, or it stays and people there just yell into the void.

gem | 2620 comments Tawnya wrote: "I think anything where we get requests should be covered, so all of the folders minus "General", "Announcements", "Policies & Practices", and "Questions". ..."

A lot of book editing requests end up in the General and Questions folders, though. I've seen mods move posts out of General, but not Questions. It would be helpful to have the "Mark as Done" feature available for these folders.

Alternate idea: allow Librarians to move posts, but that would probably introduce too many new problems.

Alternate idea #2: add a new "Flag" option for "Wrong forum -- please move" to get the mod's attention on specific posts in the wrong place.

message 27: by Tawnya (last edited Jan 23, 2024 12:38PM) (new)

Tawnya | 4040 comments I figured we would have to ask the mods to move the books since most requestors don't - either because they don't know how or they just don't care.

Maybe give us a button to request the move? That way someone with the power can see it since those who don't move their requests
probably aren't going to change the title to "Done".
