Romance - pride and prejudice
Gothic - Frankenstein, picture of Dorian grey
Sci-fi - twenty thousand leagues under the sea, war of the worlds
Crime/thriller - crime and punishment, any Agatha Christie
Fantasy - Dracula, heart of darkness, lord of the rings
Speculative/genre hybrid - Around the world in 80 days
Historical - Iliad, odyssey, Greek tales
Religious - inferno (catholic/christian)

Also, if you want a book with mental health as a focus try; Frankenstein, picture of Dorian Grey, Jakeyl and Hyde (gothic horror tends to verge on mental health topics).
