a few years ago, probably around 2018 or so, I read this book. some specific details I remember about it include:
- the main character's sister died because the MC accidentally set a fire in her parents' flower shop
- the MC's sister was the golden child of the family
- the society is dystopian and the gap between poor and wealthy is bigger than ever
- the MC is making money through a bunch of small jobs including using illegal magic
- the society is partially based off of some sort of asian culture, i don't remember what specifically
- partway through the book, the MC finds this underground fighting club for people with magic, and because of the various gangs who own different parts of the city, her parents are in massive debt, so she joins it
- there's like four different main types of magic including blood magic and bone magic and I don't remember the other two
- a main thing is that a star with however many points needs to be drawn on the caster's hand, and the more points of the star, the more magic it takes out of the earth and the more painful it is for the caster. bigger spells require more magic
- most of society, especially the higher-class, looks down on the major magic casters who use the pointed stars to cast.
- in the fighting club, which has a huge reward if you win and the constant possibility of death, you have to buy tokens in order to cast spells alongside just using the stars you draw on your hand
- there was something about the smell of lavender that was important because of the MC's sister dying due to a fire in the flower shop
