IAAA - Ilona Andrews Addicts Anonymous: Kate Daniels: Wilmington Years & Other spinoffs (December 2024)
Also...Your favorite is Grendel, the Black Dog from the Kate Daniels series. He is (currently) an attack poodle with a death smell that is impervious to B-A-T-Hs and a talent for rolling in vomit. He lived for a long time in Morrigan's Mists, but the world was ready for a lot of love and goofiness, so here he is now.
Charlie wrote: " ...a lot of these characters could have an attitude adjustment with a generous application of scissors!"I have got to remember to use that description for later lol Priceless!

Omg I totally forgot about it. I love him, too ❤️❤️
@Marie I loved the Kate and Curran moment, it was super sweet and it shows he does care, despite all the growling :D. @Choko Morrigan didn't deserve Bran that's for sure, I'm really glad he got his heroic moment. From what I understand, Bran's dog is Grendel, he was lonely waiting for Bran to come home so he left the mists and eventually found Kate, the only other visitor to the mists. It isn't canon but from what I saw, it's something they posted on social media. I choose to believe that's true because Red doesn't deserve the doggy.
Aunt B! Controlling the hyenas... not a job I envy, she is a force to be reckoned with. I really love that her natural instant was to help and hide Andrea and not turn her over to the pack.
Julie really is lucky to have found Kate. From the world building we have so far, not many people would have took in an orphan, she would have been on her own.
Saiman, I definitely have a soft spot for him, his flare happy dance was awesome.
There's so many things I enjoyed about this book, it was just a delight.
Timelord Iain, hahaha!!! My autocorrect in action again!!! We could sure use Splurt, but I meant poodle:)Charlie, I really hope you are right and he is Grendel! That definitely makes me happy!!!
Love all of your comments! It's also nice to get some more solid handles on the names of folk... Bran's name did not stick with me at all through the story... and I don't care how redeemed he is, I will still carry my scissors.
Just started Magic Strikes. I remember this one now. I think this one was the first that really sucked me in.

I don’t even remember this book but my review was
“I can list off the horribleness of this book, with no positive characteristics. Even the sex scenes are boring.”
Which just tells me that I really need to start reviewing everything I read again. If for no other reason than in 10 years I can go back and laugh at it.

I often do reviews like this, just little reminders for myself on if I liked something or not. I love the ones with snark :D.

Oh Dino shifters! Yup. Starting to ring a bell.
I started #3 Magic Strikes today and am enjoying it, through Chapter 20 right now. Though I think I liked #2 a bit more at this point--I loved Julie as a side-character, and I'm glad to see her pop up again here but she's not as active at this point--I'm liking all of the side-character pop-ups, especially Julie, Drew, and Saimon, but I do wish we got some more time with them... nice to get a good chunk with Saimon this time around, though I do agree with Diana that the motivations for that (view spoiler)
To each their own. I always felt there was consent given if not clearly spoken out. I am yet to start the re-read, though.

Especially when the person has verbally said on many occasions "I will never sleep with you even if you are the only person on earth."
But this seems a common type of relationship in PNR books... alphaholes and their protesting females... Just not my favorite type of romance. Not my least favorite either, that would go to emomances. Just makes me break out my scissors.... is it worse when I want to go for eyes or balls?
Just finished #3 Magic Strikes and I enjoyed it, but liked #2 more. Glad to be getting some series answers though! And I knew that dare was going to come around and bite her (literally) in the ass... (view spoiler)

I love a good alphahole and I love angst! I read a lot of different kinds of romance, it's such a great genre, something for everyone. Book 3 is definitely one of my faves in the series, I hope to get to it soon.

Didn't feel that way though. There would be more bravado and less crying in fear lol

I'm so confused. Who is Drew? You mean Derek?
She means Derek... I responded as if she wrote Derek, she commented again around the same time, but probably without refreshing the page, and said Drew again...
The perennial problem of being an audiobook listener whose bad with names... I'm the same way, but actually read these as ebooks originally, back in 2013, before my transition to the audio-only lifestyle (tm)...

Having kids has wrecked my brain so I wouldn't be surprised if I missed side characters, but I was panicking cuz I literally could not remember a Drew, and I thought my brain was just that broken. Having a shitty memory is very panic inducing.
Diana Stormblessed wrote: "Consent"I have not yet re-read the part but yeah for me it's enough to know that if she says no he stops. That he can read the mood and see discomfort and when he sees discomfort he asks clearly... When I read I know it's not real-world behavior, it's fantasy. For me suddenly verbally and very clearly asking for consent in the middle of this kind of playing would be jarring. But I understand that some people need that in a book too. To each their own as I said. Some people take out scissors at these alphaholes, some people swoon imagining getting pinned to the wall by them...
Curran for me is pretty ok for an alphahole, he is also not completely human so has some differences in behavior (again, might be turn-off for some people). Then there are some jerks I would take scissors to myself...

There's a reason we read fantasy. I don't expect real life behaviors or choices in fantasy characters. But also, there's a fine line in that. Like I read the Black Dagger Brotherhood books and their ulta alpha protectiveness makes me want to punch them in the face. But at the same time a pack leader who is timid like a kitten wouldn't be fun to read. Or believable that he can keep 500 giant, dangerous were animals in line. It's a fine line to tread. I personally love the fact that Curran is just teetering on that acceptable line. Sometimes he's a bit softer, and sometimes he leans on the no no side. But in my opinion he never really steps over the line. And I know everyone has their own ideas of what's acceptable and I totally get if he's not it for you. But every time I reread these I think he becomes more and more my perfect book boyfriend. I'm also a very much mood reader and I might just really be in a Curran mood right now.
I have my own problems with Black Dagger Brotherhood... not least of which is the author's obsession with making up words with extra Vs and Zs and Hs... and then basically giving them the same definition as the base word, with a very slight vampire twist... just use the regular spelling...
I agree that Curran is just the right mix of alpha and good guy energy. I think that the thing is that he also acknowledges when he gets bit too close to that line. And yeah he is someone that leads pack of individuals that fight their animal instincts on daily basis while at the same time having to keep control of his own beast. He needs to be alpha to their beasts to keep them in control.
Marie wrote: "I agree that Curran is just the right mix of alpha and good guy energy. I think that the thing is that he also acknowledges when he gets bit too close to that line. And yeah he is someone that lead..."Yes! I love that he can admit when he's wrong and is ok with sometimes relinquishing control. It's def his softer side that wins me over.
Marie wrote: "I agree that Curran is just the right mix of alpha and good guy energy. I think that the thing is that he also acknowledges when he gets bit too close to that line. And yeah he is someone that lead..."I think this is the answer. For me, Curran is a great mix of strength and control. Also, he's just a person, he's never going to be perfect, but he strives to be the better man and I think that shows.

Finished book 2 last night.
You're not wrong, a lot of these characters could have an attitude adjustment with a generous application of scissors!
Love Andrea so much, very glad the pack (view spoiler)[ didn't kill her! Also, Kate really just needs a friend. Someone without an agenda and who can be there for her emotionally. Jim... is not that person. I always liked him in this series but now i'm up to date and I know what he turns into, looking back in hindsight... yeah he deserves the scissors.
In my opinion, Red got off easy and deserved a far worse fate than immortality.
@iain I also love the order's receptionist, Maxine? She's great, such a good power to have. Aunt B is probably one of my favourite female characters of all time in this series. She's so clever and cunning, I adore her scheming.
RE Curran, I absolutely love him. Sure he can be an overbearing ass, but his heart is in the right place. He genuinely cares about people and that's rare in the KD world. (hide spoiler)]
