I think the protection was given based on the fact that she knew Sage was insistent on investigating into the death of her roommate whether she gets help or not. The website might have seem legit but I don't think Lucy would take the risk of losing her niece, and one who she wants to have a connection with even though they don't have a good relationship.
Lucy was well aware of the fact that Sage would investigate regardless so she gave her the protection she knew her niece would need.

Lucy is an ambiguous character. It is actually her book that I've been stuck on for quite a while - more than a year I think.

What is the title of that one?I also had trouble with Lucy and her machinations in this book. Very strange auntie-type response, with years to have fixed something by now.

I'm hoping to read it with the group when we get to it. I really need incentive to get back into the series although I have really enjoyed most of the books.
I think that Lauren's description of Lucy as an "ambiguous character" is spot on. Her being former CIA and having the scope of contacts she has makes her very mysterious. I look forward to her book, although some of my questions were answered in this one.I found it perfectly plausible for her to assign a Bullet Catcher to Sage. After all, if Lucy had been in Sage's position, the next thing she would have done was contract a kidnap too. Lucy found nothing she could pin on the site, but the very concept was extremely dicey.
