It would likely have been in an anthology of spooky/ghost stories, probably in the early 2000’s, as I was reading a lot about ghosts back then. The basics of the story is this:

A car of 2-3 people stop late at night at a rundown looking pub/saloon/bar while on a road trip out in the boonies. There are some oddly dressed characters who seem surprised by these visitors’ arrival, and the whole visit seems awkward and off-kilter. The visitors may have even felt unwelcome or threatened. The visitors leave. They return sometime later, either the next day or even later that same night, and find the building again, but it has clearly been abandoned for years. The kicker is there’s a painting on the wall that shows the people who had been in the saloon when the road trippers came in. The story takes place probably in the 70s-80s.
