Erica Robbin (ericarobbin) | 82 comments Alright, very controversial practices.

Do you or don't you crack the spines of your books? Do you dog ear your pages?

I don't. Definite no for me. I avoid bending the spines of my books as much as I can, whether new or used. I try to be as delicate as I can, even with the pages, keeping them in pristine condition.

Unless it's a textbook or self-help, educational exercise type book.

karissa m | 139 comments For me cracking the spine is so satisfying, but only for books that I did not like and will hid at the bottom of my book shelf. For dog earing personally I see that as a crime

message 3: by Eli (new)

Eli | 74 comments No, absolutely not. Though I try not to crack spines sometimes it happens at the top or bottom or the books and when that happens I try not to get to mad at myself lol

message 4: by James (new)

James De Maria | 6 comments I don’t intentionally crack spines but if it happens it happens, I don’t really care either way. And I do dog ear pages but only if there’s something on that page that I want to keep track of and go back to later.

message 5: by kayla (new)

kayla (kaylacallahann) | 101 comments i dont do either. i like my books looking pristine

message 6: by Kar (new)

Kar I don't do either. I have accidently cracked the spine so that book doesn't look good

literally no one's here you moron | 43 comments I crack the spines sometimes, but I never dog ear pages.

message 8: by Kanon (new)

Kanon Albrecht | 1 comments yes to both tbh.

i used to dog ear my pages when i was younger (i don't do that anymore, but have ZERO qualms about it if i can't find a bookmark), and i crack the spines. i love my books looking well loved and read. the only ones i don't are any special editions, but usually those are hardback so i have nothing to worry about.

books are mean to be used. of course, treating your property with some respect is a baseline, but as long as you're enjoying what you're reading or it makes reading better, who really cares

Artemis~Ebonie (Inactive) | 65 comments I don't on purpose but sometimes I accidentally crack the spine or bend the page while I'm reading and I'm fine with that.

message 10: by cherrymay ☆ (new)

cherrymay ☆ (cherryfreckle) | 5 comments i crack the spines. to me it makes the book look well used and i love that.

message 11: by Azari (new)

Azari (azarvyx) | 25 comments i don't do either but I used to when I was a kid. now I relax the spines of my books if I feel the need and use bookmarks

message 12: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 116 comments No????

Shannen Libraryof2stories (shannenlibraryof2stories) I have a friend who doesn't want her spines to be cracked, so when I borrow her books (and I've borrowed quite a few books of her!) I'm capable of not cracking the spines, but... when it comes to my own books, I'm really not capable of keeping the spines neat...

As a little girl I used to dog-ear my books, but I don't do that anymore!

Ciggeratesandbooks | 3 comments I don't do either.

message 15: by Geloü (new)

Geloü I crack the spine of my books as I feel pressured and uncomfortable while reading when I try not to. However, I loathe any creases on my books so I never tried to dog ear any of them.

message 16: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessacumberlandcountypa) My cookbooks have cracked spines but I try to be gentler in handling my other books.

message 17: by Daniele (new)

Daniele (danielezan) | 25 comments I don't like to crack the spine and I don't dog ear any of my books. I like to find a bookmark for every book that I read and I will leave it in the book once I have read it.

message 18: by Michael (new)

Michael Oxley | 11 comments I try not to crack spines and would never dog ear any book.

message 19: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 11 comments Absolutely not! JUST NO

message 20: by Chris (new)

Chris St Laurent | 120 comments I don’t crack te spine, I try to be gentle, books are meant to be passed on and read often.

message 21: by Len (new)

Len | 51 comments As with others, I never intentionally crack a spine and I never dog-ear pages. Use a bookmark!

message 22: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments I would never do that.
I have books from the 1960's which still look brand new, even though I've read them multiple times.
Why dog-earing a book? Use a bookmark.

message 23: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments WOW, Len! I should have read your comment before I wrote mine. :) Two hearts, one thought.

message 24: by Tarynla☾ (new)

Tarynla☾ | 80 comments Neither. I may crack my spines unintentionally but I try not to.

message 25: by Isabella (new)

Isabella | 22 comments Oh, the great book etiquette debate! It's like choosing sides in the epic battle of Spine Crackers vs. Pristine Page Protectors. I'm firmly in the "Handle with Care" camp, too. I mean, who wants to endure the guilty conscience of mistreating a poor, innocent book?

And you're spot on with the Bookworm Code, Rule One: "Thou shalt not disrespect thy books, or else face the silent, judgmental gaze of bookworm society." If you do, you're a disgrace (jk... but still 👀).

Let's be rebels with our rebellion confined to the world of fiction, not the spines of our beloved books! 📚😄

flipped over a corner of the page to mark your place

Kanomi Okina ||Emily the Seraphim|| (goodreadscomkanomi_okina) | 101 comments Oooh, yeah I do that to Chicken Soup books. But to mark my fav stories

message 29: by luna ♡ (last edited Jan 02, 2024 11:14AM) (new)

luna ♡ | 53 comments yea, i dog year my books and i crack the spines, dog earing is whatever, but i fine spine cracking to be satisfying and makes the book easier to read, i just like a good worn down book. but if i borrow i book from someone else then i'llbe careful with it because i get it, but i have my own set of book rules

message 30: by Kiley (new)

Kiley Pingle (kpingle107) | 39 comments I don't dog ear books but i do crack spines. It makes it easier to read. I wont if i borrow a book though. i love looking at my bookshelf and seeing a well read book. It means it was good and likely read multiple times.

Rissa (rissasreading) (rissasreading) | 178 comments sometimes while reading my book spines do get bent but I don't dog ear my pages anymore

message 32: by Megan (new)

Megan Rose | 40 comments I crack the spine but I don't dog ear books. Cracking the spine happens unintentionally 'cause I'm so invested in the book. I won't crack the spine if I'm borrowing, 'cause I wouldn't want them to do it to mine.

message 33: by Ryebread (new)

Ryebread I NEVer dog ear my pages... I do accidentally Crack the spine :'(

message 34: by Diane (new)

Diane I have honestly never done either...both are criminal acts against a book 😲😵😳😱😩😫

message 35: by Dave (new)

Dave | 41 comments This is why I do almost all my reading on a Kindle. If it's a real book, that's why there are bookmarks.

message 36: by Abi (new)

Abi | 104 comments I've done both and probably will do again if I'm completely honest with myself. I've recently started using bookmarks though which I do prefer. The spine thing is just crazy to me I won't lie. Some books have to be cracked to be comfy to read.
Disclaimer: Only to my own books, im not an outright monster.

message 37: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments The spines of hardcover books don't need to get cracked.

message 38: by LiteraryCryptid (new)

LiteraryCryptid | 60 comments I don't crack spines on purpose, but a lot of my books end up with them cracked and lined in my favourite parts (where I keep going back to them). . . As for dog-ears - not usually, I used to dog-ear my favourite pages, but now I use book-friendly sticky-tabs.

message 42: by Barbara (last edited Jan 04, 2024 09:42AM) (new)

Barbara (quakerwidow) | 155 comments It has happened, but not recently, and is impossible with Kindle. In my defense, these were OLD books bought second or third-hand or free and having already sustained some damage.

message 44: by Malissa (new)

Malissa (malissa1578) | 163 comments I do not dog ear. I grew out of that at about 12. I am not big on cracking the spine, but I will if necessary.

message 45: by Dee (new)

Dee Turner | 17 comments I have occasionally cracked a spine when I couldn't grasp the book to read unless I did--usually with large volumes. I despised dog-earing books, but I underlined and wrote copious notes all over the margins. (It was great to go back and see how asinine I was then.)
These days I'm all about e-readers, as I'm disabled and can no longer hold a book. I've appreciated clearing many, many bookcases of books I've had for half a century that were only food for earworms. On the other hand, I do maintain a carefully curated library of books to have and hold when the electrical grid fails.

I do wish Amazon would allow me to highlight much more from a book, but they have an auto-stop to prevent my highlighting half a book, as I SO desperately want to do with my current reread of Middlemarch! (My hard copy reveals how single-minded and young I was when I last read it--then, I perceived much of it as tragedy. Now, I find so much of it hilarious! It allows me the grace of my antiquity.)

Tim Mcguire | 166 comments A Jason Voorhees bookmark for me.

message 47: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (taylornoellefox) | 2 comments Hell no!! I like to keep all my books looking new. It's a neurotic tendency of mine.

message 48: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne No. I don’t crack them. Not unless I have read them many times. Then by using them so much, the spine cracks but that would be it.

Never dog ear. My grandmother was a librarian. Always use a bookmark.

message 49: by Shan (new)

Shan Green | 6 comments I read on my Kindle, then if I really like the book, I buy a physical copy as a trophy, this way it always stays looking pretty!

message 50: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 131 comments yes! i used to be hyper careful about spines but i’m in a place now where i want my books to look used—it means i’ve loved them and truly read them rather than just bought them!
and i annotate but don’t like the look of page tabs, so i sometimes dogear pages with my favorite quotes and annotations!
i don’t judge anyone who wants to keep their books pristine, though! <3
