Dee Turner | 17 comments I usually read more than 150 and that's my goal for 2024--BUT. After reading this Atlantic article: "Against Counting the Books You Read--The number of titles you finish in a year says little about your actual reading habits, by Emma Sarappo" I've realized getting us to count the number of our books is just an Amazon ploy to reap even greater profits.

So THIS year, my goal is to read more books in translation, like We, the Drowned, The Beartown Trilogy, A Man Called Ove, Nervous People, Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead, and Aednan (an achingly beautiful story of same old same old white people annihilating brown culture, told in verse)--I highly recommend ALL OF THESE--and I solemnly pledge to read books, of any length, that seem worthy and intellectually rigorous. I will ignore the Reese Witherspoon hype, and Amazon/publishers' as well. Happy reading!

I'm currently enjoying Hild (776 pages), by Nicola Griffith, and also this year's Caldecott Award Winner for middle grades: The Eyes and the Impossible.
