What Are You Reading - 2024
I'm glad I chose a dozen of Michael Connelly's Bosch series to read through 2024 because it means I'm assured of at least one good read a month. Nobody missed The Concrete Blonde, an obviously interchangeable porn performer, until her body is discovered, which could ruin Bosch's career.
My review of The Concrete Blonde
I finished Cytonic. It was good but didn't live to expectations after book 1.I also finished The Bright Side Sanctuary for Animals. I wasn't expecting much from this one but it was very good. My library had it listed as Romance but it was so much more.
I received my library hold, The Outsider and started that. It wasn't due till mid march. I also got The Confession. This was for the Realm Of the Elderlings hike and was scheduled to available in July! I had to send it back. Darn library not wanting to keep me waiting *grrr*
Finished Night Waking. I really like this lady writes! I also like the way she managed to link this story to a couple of others novels.I started Our Missing Hearts.
I finished The Last Phone Booth in Manhattan. It was a romance retelling of DIckens a Christmas Carol, It would have fit February's monthly challenge prompt. Next up is Carniepunk which has been on my tbr forever, and will fill the gap while I finish my current hike read.
I’m reading a book called Finding Their Christmas Home: An Uplifting Inspirational Romance by Donna Gartshore
Finished Mission Churchill - a fun read. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show.... I’m listening to The Museum of Failures: A Novel by Thrity Umrigar - close to finishing it.
Tommy Orange introduces the urban Indians of Oakland, California in his award-winning There There. What used to be there, isn't there anymore, Great read.
My review of There, There
I loved the Convenience Store Woman who refused to be pigeon-holed ... except by herself. Who cares what everyone else thinks? Sayaka Murata has created a memorable character indeed.
My review of Convenience Store Woman
I am a great fan of Mick Herron's Slough House series but didn't realise that The Secret Hours was so wonderfully connected to it. Loved seeing some old favourites, back in the day in Berlin.
My review of The Secret Hours
I’m reading a book called Make Me a Match: Baby, Baby\The Matchmaker Wore Skates\Suddenly Sophie by Melinda Curtis
I finished reading In the Blink of An Eye which I enjoyed a lot, although I did guess some aspects of it early on. I like the premise and I may read future books in the series.Inspired by Rusalka's recent read, I'm heading back to the Rivers of London series with Whispers Underground. I can't remember huge amounts above the previous 2 books so I hope that's not an issue.
I started new books - A Dying Fall (kindle) for the hiking challenge, and The Heiress for 2024 release.
I finished two books. The Namesake was an indepth look into the life of a Indian-American man and the inner conflict he experience as he was pulled two cultures. It was slow moving and a study of character which I enjoyed very much. The other was Ninth House which I didn't like so well. I think I just don't like the authors writing style as I didn't get on with a previous of hers.Started Defiant by an author whose style I know I love!
I finished Rules of Civility yesterday and started Little Women for my face-to-face book club. I need to read it before the toppler begins.
It's the 30th anniversary of writer Anne Lamott's classic, Bird by Bird Good advice for writers, mixed with humour and entertaining anecdotes for us readers.
My review of Bird by Bird
I started The Spaceship Next Door, It's been on my TBR for a long time. I'm not sure if I'm going to finish this book or not. I think if I can remember that far back that I thought it would be a quirky read. So far, it's leaning more to the political side with the military trying to monitor it. I'll see how I feel about it tomorrow.
Aussie/UK mystery writer Rachel Amphlett has a couple of stories on her website you might enjoy Devil of a Favor is a very short story with a worrying premise and a twist.
My review of Devil of a Favor
The second story by Rachel Amphlett is A Burning Question, a longer mystery featuring Detective Kay Hunter from her well-known series, although this is a standalone. Narrowboats have become a target for arson.
My review of A Burning Question
I finished reading Rules of Civility and listening to The Rose Code. Now, I can start Code Name Verity for my hike to Mordor.
I finished Horse for the toppler - interesting to learn about horses and worth reading. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show.... Also finished listening to The Museum of Ordinary People for the toppler - it was a good companion on my walks.
Now with my last toppler book Bread and Wine and will return to Wandering Stars when I’m done eating bread and drinking wine.
I finished The Strangers for the Toppler. It was just an okay read for me. I'm disappointed because it was so highly rated. I will get back to the hike challenge tomorrow and start Silent in the Sanctuary.
Currently reading The Expectant Detectives for the toppler, monthly challenge, and yearly challenge. :) And The Old Ducks' Club for the toppler. So far, both are ok reads, but nothing great.
I recently enjoyed the very popular Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid. People who have preconceived notions about each other are bound to say the wrong thing.
My review of Such a Fun Age
I read The Dentist for the toppler. I have also been listening to There is Nothing to Fix: Becoming Whole Through Radical Self-Acceptance which I'm not exactly enjoying but I will finish it, I was hoping it would be a second toppler read. Then I can get back to my other books.
I'd have been saying a lot more than Hail, Mary, if I'd been on board that spaceship in Andrew Weir's amazing sci-fi adventure, Project Hail Mary! A wild, fascinating ride into the unknown, full of warmth and affection in spite of the terror.
My review of Project Hail Mary
I'm reading Silent in the Sanctuary on audiobook for the hike challenge, and Emily and Einstein on hardcover for my irl book club meeting in March.
The Expectant Detectives
was difficult to review because it was very middle of the road for me. my reviewI started Lone Wolf
, the newest addition to the Orphan X series.
I'm reading The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. I started it right before the Toppler, but put aside to read for the Toppler. Now I have to finish it before my book club meeting on Thursday night - I don't think it's going to happen.

This children's picture book about a puzzled pirate, The Hoys by Kes Gray, has some great illustrations by Mark Chambers which I shared in my review.

I gave up on The Goldfinch. I will give it another try since I loved The Secret History, but I can't focus on something like that right now. I didn't finish it on time for my book club meeting so I have no rush.
