SOLVED. Children's book about time travel with magic ring

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for the title of a children's book, part of a series, that I read back in 2006 or so. Here's what I recall: it was about a girl who had a magic ring that let her time travel, and she transported herself from the present to WWII. I believe she transported herself to Japan, but I'm not sure, and I can't remember if she transported herself to precisely during the war or a few years after it. She brought a friend along too. While they were in the past, they got involved fighting against some villainous conspiracy. The "head villain" was a spy of some kind. I remember one scene in particular where they joined up with a group of local kids and tailed this guy in search of evidence. They nearly got caught, but the protagonist came up with a lie on the spot and pretended that their following him was just part of a game they were playing. In the climax, the villain figured out that they were on to him and went to shoot them, but the girl used her magic ring just in time to transport herself and her friend back to the present.

I apologize that I can't remember character names or any specifics apart from this. I've scoured the Internet for this book and I can't find any candidates that would match up. It's driving me crazy! If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated.
