My foot injury stopped feeling better and started getting worse/swelling, so now I'm at urgent care for X-ray and probably light duty or leave of absence from work while it heals unhindered... We'll see... This could be a good thing or a bad thing for my reading/BRs...

The pain has gotten crazy bad in the past 24hrs...

Just when I thought I was mostly healed and tried to stop limping all the time... (Got cocky, I guess)

Probably... Too stubborn to visit doctor... Overdoing it ... Assuming the healing was done too early... Etc...

I figured I knew all the things... Should have probably just gone to doctor and light work weeks ago...

Waiting on X-ray results... Nurse tested range of movement and right toes were lacking... Pain radiated out from the bone/joint at side of foot above the big toe... Probably did some real damage... Find out how much soon...

When I got my work sock off, I found out my big toe and a bit of foot were super swollen… more swollen than any time in the past 3 weeks (and it was only really swollen the first few days before the bruise started healing, after that the bit of flesh on underside of big toe was a bit swollen and that’s it)… XRay showed a fracture of phalanx of great toe (their terminology)… got a No Work release form until Wednesday, to let the swelling go down and healing start, then I can return to work and do light duty stuff with alot of sitting down probably, and a followup with ortho doctor…

Honestly, the best secondary news to come out of this is that the other main clinic in town finally settled a multi-year dispute with Blue Cross Blue Shield, and I no longer am limited in my doctor/specialist options, locally… I switched PCPs 18 months ago because they had been out of network for nearly 1 year and I had medical issues that needed solving

Bookwise I’ve been listening to easy books October Daye 14 and Adam Binder 3 (started at doc office)… the pain has been pretty bad today before going to doc and while sitting around waiting… kinda leads to a pain trance…

Glad to be home where I can give it an ice/cold water epsom soak and numb it up for a bit…

Fun times during medical history at doc, when I can be like, Yea… this is my lucky toe… broke it at work 9 years ago with a 12-14ft red steep beam (used in warehouse to hold pallets of product 10-30ft in the air)… also dropped an empty wooden pallet on it 11-13 years ago and bruised it similar to 3 weeks ago (presumably without the fracture that time)

Bought it...

Feeling a bit better after sleep... slept in support boot to protect more from jostling, and the pain has died back down (no pain most of the time, able to walk almost pain-free to get around house as needed, etc...)

I needed these 2 rest days + 2 regular days off to reset my foot for light duty at work, where I hopefully sit down most of the time and have elevated support sandal... clearly, walking around on it in regular shoes for 4-8hrs/day was only escalating the problem, especially whatever I did to re-trigger it the past few days...

Best/worst part of any injury/illness like this, is having to deal with the Leave of Absense / Claims Management Service... only time I've ever had to deal with them in the past was for Covid, and that was a bit of a rubber stamped process...

message 270: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Recommend walking barefoot in house. Use a good running socks for when ya go back to work. Foot will swell and be larger than normal when injured. If your shoe is too tight cause of injury, easy for foot to be too confined and get more injured.

Look up vids for resistant bands exercises for strengthening ankles. That has good stretches and controlled movement to help heal & strengthen your feet muscles.

Glad it's a known problem vs mystery ailment. 👌

message 272: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35622 comments Mod
You make good points... I wore the sandal for the past 24hrs, because the pain had gotten so bad I could barely walk, even with it, yesterday... things are alot better now, and I'm sure will get better over the next 3 days... just need to make sure to not let it get bad like that again, and continue healing...

Last night, I was minimizing movement as much as possible, to the point of just sitting in the kitchen while cooking to avoid walking back and forth more times than necessary... things finally stabilized/recovered 75-90% overnight... mostly just twinges now...

message 273: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Monika wrote: "@Soo did you start Book of Night?"

Starting later today! You can post about it here with spoiler tags for spoilers. How do you like it thus far? It'll be an evening read for me.

@Iain - Take the time to get yourself good running socks and shoes. We all need healthy feet for ease of movement. I grew up trying to save money. Had to retrain my mindframe about quality + cost to go from select areas to all areas that are part of my base life. I love my sale buys! Who doesn't enjoy a good discount and saving money.

But cheap shoes & clothes of poor quality leads to poor body care and spending more money on replacements.

We all gotta live to the golden elderly years and chat about life and books for many happy years. 🤗

I buy Hoka shoes now... thick soles, good support, better for cement floors... cost like $150... and I generally wear compression socks, so don't have much in the way of regular socks anymore, other than some winter wool socks I've been using since my foot injury, at least at home... wearing compression socks over injured foot to work might not have been the best decision, tho...

Belgariad is great! I read those as a teen to adult. I don't think the series comes across well in audio, but great adventure stories in print. I love the family & friendships.

Could call it cozy re-reads.

You want althetic light compression socks. Running or Biking compression socks are made for active wear and more likely to deal with sweat & friction better.

Regular compression socks are ok for light walking or sleeping. They don't do much for better fabric weave on foot areas to adjust for movement frictions & cooling/drying faster.

I have thicker running or biking compression socks for winter and thin running socks for all other seasons.

🤭 I let altheticwear become a big chunk of my wardrobe. Hehehhe

I've been wearing compression socks for a few years for leg circulation and varicose veins and nerve trigger issues that were causing me problems with pinpoint pains... visited doctor and had nerve tests done... I just wear the CopperFit ones you can get at pharmacy/etc for $10 or so... I like having a fairly large supply so I don't have to wash every day... I have enough to do a cold wash load in washer and air dry, and haven't had too many issues with shrinkage... early on, I did the whole handwashing thing...

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments The Green Tea’s Crushing Victories in the ’70s - I wish the translation was better! The story is super funny!

🤣🤣🤣

(Setting: 70's Mainland China, Most jobs are male centered. Main Character is Tong Xue Lu. She is a spunky, smart modern gal that was transmigrated into a story. Just took Chef certification test & only one to pass. Bunch of 30s men mocked her for being a young female taking test.)

Tong Xue Lu: What can a man do, he can't have children, and now he can't even cook food. To put it bluntly, there is no egg!

🤣🤣🤣

Hahahha! One of the reasons I liked David Eddings was due to how well the female characters (witty, strong) and family/friend bonds were written. Way before it was publicized and author pen changed, I figured David Eddings had a female editor or co-author. Turns out the stories were written by a married author duo! Husband and wife team. The newer prints have David and Leigh Eddings on cover.

Once you read the books in Belgariad series, get the prequel books:
- Belgarath the Sorcerer
- Polgara the Sorceress

The prequels are fun to read after the series. Good as additonal standalones. Probably not as great as standalones without the established reader connections to the series.

Clicked on the author page, and the bio tells the whole story of their year in prison for child abuse in the 60s/70s, before going on to be successful authors... and how nobody connected the dots, despite extensive newpaper coverage at the time, until after they died in 2007-2009...

Knee high compression socks are good for sleep. You can always get knee high athletic compressuon socks. Like soccer, running, long distance biking. There are variety weights/thickness & compression range.

I put all my althetic socks in mesh washing bags, wash gentle cycle and dry with medium gentle cycle. Only air dry while traveling.

Yah, people can be crappy and still write good books. That's not news.

I forgot about the child abuse. Never dug into the news about it.

I honestly don't think about that part. I just remember the books and enjoying them. I did re-read some Belgariad and prequels after hearing about the abuse. Still liked the books.

It's up there with Elizabeth Bear and Scott Lynch shady grooming/mentor abuse. Way more people read Bear. The controversy and gossip was a big part of Lynch's 'depression'. Take everything with a grain of salt.

I'm not a fan of Bear's writing. Love Gentleman Bastards by Lynch. More than likely, will never see more work out of Lynch. Doesn't make me sad though.

I didn't read Orson Scott Card for a good while cause he's a jerk. But I started reading his books via library & sales. I enjoy the books. He sucks as a person though.

🤷‍♀️

I only have one author down as don't spend money or read. That's based on personally seeing questionable actions by author that I felt were crappy as a person and negative author influence on readers/reviewers/authors.

As normal, it's based on case by case on whether an author is a crappy person will make me not read their work.

That's another rabbit hole. Finding out which authors have bad reps and why. Like Marian Zimmer Bradley. Glad I read most of her books when I was a kid and before I heard news about her being child abuser.

I don't think you are allergic to wool like I am. So you can get smartwool athletic socks/etc.

REI/Dick's Sport/Running stores.
Nike, Asiacs, etc have good socks. Once ya figure out which socks you like, it may cost more than normal but they will last a long time.

I'm super hard on my socks when I'm hiking and working out. Lots of impact/friction and my go to socks last for years. About 3-4 years.

I gave away most of my regular socks to friends cause they're in good condition and I stopped using them. 😆

No idea... it's more like an obituary, since the authors have been dead for a decade... gives a bit of a life story, random interview quote, and date and cause of death... and short blurb about a house fire destroying many original manuscripts...

I enjoy our rambling chats! Goof times with pals! Woo!

The Green Tea’s Crushing Victories in the ’70s:

🤣🤣🤣 The romance in this is super low key and adorable.

Tong Xue Lu is a modern gal that transmigrated into a story. Wen Ru Gui is a super smart, introvert science guy with military grandpa upbringing. He's completely naive about relationships.

Xue Lu got into a bit of trouble and Ru Gui marched out like an avenger to help.

She's all like, You passed my tests and we're official boyfriend + girlfriend.

Then she kissed his cheek. He turned red as a tomato and emotionally stayed on cloud 9 of happiness.

🤣🤣🤣

She's all like: He is so cute! I can't wait to see how he reacts to being called baby or honey.
