I'd trust Butcher more if Dresden was still 20 books + captstone Outsiders trilogy... but now that it's 25 books + trilogy, and it takes him like 5 years to release a book (he explained why Peace Talks + Battle Grounds took so long, but it's been another 5-6 years waiting for Twelve Months, so it's hard to say it was an anomaly...

Anyway... at this rate, it'll take 40-50 years to finish the series, and he turned 54 today...

I finished Battle Mage Farmer series with #8-9 today... and it scaled up so hard... it's crazy to think back to what was considered the challenges at the start of the series, and where it ended up...

In the final book he dealt with an immortal dragon empire across multiple worlds... and that ended at like the halfway point of the book... then there was a long denouement, and an entire Dresden plot of Outsiders, that he just casually dealt with, while learning about the deity culture floating around...

This is honestly one of the best "life goes on endings" I think I've ever read... the last pages of the book involved gods coming to ask for help dealing with an upstart dragon cult in the far reaches of the multiverse, and the MC is like "I'll be home for dinner, honey" and goes off to "deal with the weeds", as a reference to the farming lifestyle he spends the whole series trying to settle down to, with varying success for short periods of time...

I might have grown a bit salty about Dresden Files / Jim Butcher over the years...

It's a shame, since I love the books and rate them highly... including Codex Alera... haven't read Cinder Spires since it's an unfinished trilogy...

I discovered Dresden Files (for the second time, since I saw the failed show years before, in college), at the perfect time to get the early books in paperback and Changes in hardback, before moving to ebooks in 2011/2012/2013... I was invested, buying the books instead of using a library... and then the drought started...

Restarted the first 2hrs of The Perfect Run 2, after starting it the other day, and paying much better attention tonight and loving all the developments... 4hrs remaining, chapter 33...

I'll try to get out more thoughts in a bit, and revisit your spoilers above...

Chapter 39: "Raw Nemesis Chemistry"...

This book is awesome, lol...

It's like the book version of Misfits & Magic Season 2, Episode 6: Code Crimson: a D&D campaign of Dimension 20 that parodies Harry Potter to some extent... the second season involves magic going wonky and exploring a number of islands where things are broken in different ways... episode 6 is very meta with the characters on an island trapped in a General Hospital / Grey's Anatomy format hospital soap opera... lots of tropes and romance in the closet... the DM and one or 2 of the cast members had a lot of fun with it... the others endured or were living in a nightmare to comedic effect... they escaped by taking advantage of Sweeps Week and the Sappy Holiday Episode tropes...

That's what the storyline of Quicksave and Wardrobe has been reminding me of a bit... they're living in their own little world, separate from basically everything else going on in the plot... living the dream of archnemesisness...

Narilka | 5856 comments Oh yes they do lol They're fun together :)

I finished How To Survive History. It was fun :) Yes, hiding in a cave the t-rex can't fit in is part of the advice but also they don't run as fast as hollywood has made out. Plus once they do get going they're too big to turn easily so a human in decent shape could likely outrun them too just by making abrupt turns. At least that's the theory since none are alive to test with :D Basically the book confirmed something I'd already suspected - I don't want to live in olden times. If time travel is discovered, I'm going to the future!

I'll be starting The Perfect Run 3 this weekend. I'm ready for the final insanity :D

I've resisted that, despite mentioning it, for a couple years now... there's some real downsides to trying to do the Goodreads thing on Discord, in my opinion... but the real time updates and ability to ping people on their mobile devices can be kinda nice... maintain contact in emergencies...

With Discord, I had Sir Anni / Annika active on Goodreads in under 2hrs, after telling her Virginie had shown back up after a 4 year hiatus...

Meanwhile, we worried about Soo for a year before she turned back up... since none of us had a discord contact/etc...

I only have Annika because of the little short fiction thing we did for Virginie, years ago...dramatizing the spreadsheet creation...

message 2613: by Narilka (new) - rated it 4 stars

Narilka | 5856 comments Yeah, Discord chats aren't like threads in GRs. It could work for the bookclub style though less so when we have tons of new BRs created each month.

I still have it (well, it's at my mother's place, but it's there on a bookshelf!). I actually cried when I opened the package, I was so happy haha.
(Also, I wondered how the hell you summoned Anni so fast when I popped back up. Glad to finally have an answer lol)

And I think I can still dig up the google doc file of the little book we made... but it's confusing, because Anni had to rearrage the pages so they'd print the right way, when combined into multiple smaller folded pages at the printer, I think?... so I have to puzzle out which page to read next at the end of each page, scrolling up and down...

That book sounds like so much fun. It's a running joke I have with my brother that, if there's ever a zombie apocalypse, zombie-me would be faster than human-me considering my negative agility stat lol.

It was a fun book :) I'm glad I picked it up in an Audible sale. Turns out you could also out run the destruction of Pompeii if you started running at the first volcanic explosion AND went the correct direction (north or south, not east/west). That one is technically easier than a t-rex because you have more time though you can't dawdle. A determined fast walk could escape Pompeii.

I just read I Was a Teenage Slasher a few days ago, and it had supernatural slasher film logic, and the MC gained the ability to move faster while limping with a rock in his shoe, than he could walk/run normally... at least when nobody is looking...

You triggered something... I've had a nice long chat with Anni today, on Discord, because of this... lured her into checking in a bit more often, alerting to future Drew Hayes BR plans, and even trying to get her and her husband to try Dungeon Crawler Carl...

Iain, would you like to give the first Starry Hollow Witches a try next or go back to Wayward Bard? Starry Hollow is supposed to be cozy if you want to keep with Nov's theme.

Jonathan Brooks is the same author as the Earthen Contenders series I've been reading... that's an OP solo healer LitRPG... and he has like a half dozen omnibuses and LitRPG series floating around... I'm reading Earthen Contenders 6 soon, and just wishlisted all the omnibuses to try, and either buy on sale, with Whispersync, or with credits... I'm sure there's plenty of value to be had...

Maxime J. Durand has a bunch of other series we can try in the future

The first one on his Audible Author page immediately caught my attention tho:

Vainqueur the Dragon: The Complete Series: A LitRPG Series Bundle

Vainqueur Knightsbane is your average dragon: a giant, fire-breathing lizard who loves to take naps on his golden hoard, kidnap princesses for fun, and make the life of adventurers miserable. Vainqueur's only pleasure in life is to watch his treasure get bigger, one coin at a time.

So when a would-be thief turned unwilling minion tells him about "classes," "levels," and "quests," Vainqueur wonders if maybe, just maybe, he should consider a career change.

After all, why bother hunting monsters for free when you can get paid for it?
