The Paris Novel
Ruth Reichl
4/5 stars
I love Ruth Reichl but I thought this was a non-fiction book. However, it was a fictional book about Stella who has inherited some money from her mother so she who heads off for Paris and has some wonderful adventures and meets some wonderful people. Highly recommended!

I didn't really get into this. But it's a classic so I'm going to be generous in my rating.

Elevation by Stephen King
4 stars
Elevation by Stephen King

Tagged as horror, it's not really all that horrifying. A man keeps losing weight, even though he doesn't lose body mass and when he puts things in his pockets he still weighs the same. After losing 40 pounds even he is eating large amounts of food, he wonders what will happen if he keeps losing until he weighs nothing at all. I thought the ending would be predictable but it actually was surprising. A quick read at only 145 pages.

This was a fascinating book about the history of labor in the United States. It discusses exploitation of workers including child workers, miners who wanted to unionize, textile workers wanting wages that would cover their expenses and have left over money and organizing Uber drivers. Non-fiction

Where Angels Tread Real Stories of Miracles and Angelic Intervention by Leslie Rule

How could you not believe in angels when there are so many stories of people that have been helped by them? This book has many stories of people who have shared their experiences, most just a few paragraphs, so this is a quick read.

Reading through for the second time. So many good ideas here to keep our homes chemical free. It uses essential oils a lot. Now if I could just get my husband on board with this.

I think if Stephen King wrote a book of poetry about his happiest childhood memories they would still call it horror. I actually loved this book!

Right now I am about 2/3 of the way through Paradise by Koji Suzuki. It's a fantasy story about a couple trying to find each other through multiple lifetimes in different centuries.

Lucy by the Sea by Elizabeth Strout
Lucy by the Sea by Elizabeth Strout

I wanted to read this because I love her Olive Kittridge books, but I just don't get the same feeling for Lucy. I believe this is the second book in a series of Lucy books. The premise is that Lucy's ex-husband is so worried about her getting covid that he whisks her away from New York and takes her to Maine. Apparently, the virus is not so deadly there. She is so afraid of getting the virus that she doesn't go anywhere, which actually makes for a pretty boring book. Along the way there are daughter issues and of course, she shares a house with her ex-husband, and well, you can probably guess where that leads. I was disappointed that she really didn't delve into the true hardships of the pandemic and instead seemed to be content in her own little world. Not a book I would recommend if you are looking for something of substance about the pandemic.

I'm glad you liked this. I have it here, but was disappointed that my library network doesn't have it on audiobook recorded by the brilliant Jayne Entwistle even though one was done. Her recordings have evened out the series for me.

Cindy Rae (goodreadscomcindy_rae) | 2 comments The Sicilian Inheritance
My daughter and I spent a few weeks traveling through Sicily this summer. When I travel, I find stories to read about the place I am in. Although this book is part memoir/part fiction, I found it intriguing and it gave life to the places I traveled to on the island.
It was easy reading and I finished it while hanging out at various beaches.

Long Haul: Hunting the Highway Serial Killers by Frank Figliuzzi
4 stars
Long Haul Hunting the Highway Serial Killers by Frank Figliuzzi

After reading some of the reviews for this book, it seems that the people who gave this book a low rating were expecting a book about specific crimes of serial killers, but there is very little here about specific crimes. Instead, it is more about the culture of long-haul truckers that make it easy for murderers to get away with their crimes. A truck-driving friend says that it is a very dangerous job, not just on the highways, but places where truckers stop can be very dangerous. I thought this was a very interesting look at the trucking industry and the element that it attracts.

Fairy Gardening Creating Your Own Magical Miniature Garden by Julie Bawden-Davis

Reading this book in the winter gave me some ideas to get excited about next spring. I would say this would be a good book for a beginner fairy gardener, but most of the ideas are common sense.
