Tyler Evans | 1 comments This may be a less trustworthy description, but for me, it rings a bell (provided by AI): When thirteen-year-old Sarah Evans is sold to a cruel and abusive mistress in 1860s Alabama, she must rely not only on her wit, but her love for a young man from the plantation next door, in order to survive.

Here is what I remember.

I remember reading a book years ago when I was in middle school and can only remember a select few details. I think I was maybe eleven at the time, so it would have been about six or seven years ago. I can’t remember exactly. Here is what I remember.

A young girl is forced to serve a wealthy family around 1750-1850. She was sold into slavery at around age 13-17. The woman was described as being large and overweight in the book. She is overbearing and incredibly demanding.

At first the girl isn’t trusted outside the house and the doors are locked at all times and has to be “trained” to serve them properly.

At one point, the wealthy woman makes the girl serve her while an important man visits. I remember vividly that the woman stuck large rectangles of some sort of fur on her eyebrows because, as the book put it, that was the style at the time; bushy eyebrows. The woman got too close to the candles burning, and the glue holding it melted, allowing the eyebrow to slide off her face and into her food. The girl watched the entire time.

Eventually, after being trusted more and more, the girl is let out to go get water from the communal well in town. She is monitored by the wealthy man (her "owner"). Many others meet at the well and sympathize with the girl.

Throughout the story, there’s a main love interest who helps the girl through her new life of forced servitude. They escape together at the end of the book.

Overall, the book is about a girl forced into slavery to wealthy people and eventually escapes with the help of a kind man.

I got this from my school, either from the library or a teacher’s collection.

I've been searching for this book for years. Some details might be wrong, but if you have any ideas, please, please let me know. Thanks!

Tyler, in your first post, is this the only part generated by AI? --
"When thirteen-year-old Sarah Evans is sold to a cruel and abusive mistress in 1860s Alabama, she must rely not only on her wit, but her love for a young man from the plantation next door, in order to survive."

We need to know which are your memories.
