OH no, you're right! Ugh...sorry about that. I'm glad you double checked it! I guess it was just a brain malfunction since I used it for the mini-challenge PINK color. lol

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments I was adding a book for the mini challenge and then realized I don't think I can. I see that Dave added his book for KING and that's what I had, too. I now realize we can't both do KING as name in the story. So since it says The King's...or something with a hatchet, can he (Dave) use the cover with a hatchet on it? If not, I can't use my book so I'll remove it or anyone else can remove it for me. If we can only use Cover color, title in series, name in story, or author name, I guess the image of a hatchet won't work anyway. I was hoping someone could confirm that for me, please.

Gwen|| Bookish Blondie (bookishblondie) | 48 comments These are the areas allowed pulled directly from the OG post: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

- book title
- series title
- author name
- item on cover
- cover colour (no matter how much of it is found on the cover as long as one can actually detect it with the naked eye)
- name from the story (any character or named creature, you could even use the cat's name if you like)
- setting of the story (can be the entire setting, can be the setting of a single scene, whatever works for your creation)

So items are definitely allowed.

I added the other drop downs.

So now we have
Orange Fire Glow

and
The Wicked Purple King

Vicki you can use your orange on to start a new cocktail as there was already an orange one listed above.

Oh, OK, I see how it works now. I'll see what else I can do with my books. I've had a slower than usual reading month! Thanks for adding those to the drop down because I thought we could only use what was there.

You said I can add my orange one to start a new cocktail, so do I just add an orange line or can I add a blue one because that's the main color of my book? Or I could make it green?

Gwen|| Bookish Blondie (bookishblondie) | 48 comments You can do blue!

message 257: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments Actually, I don't know how to make the line so that it also covers the drop down. I'm not real good working on a SS, but I'm going to start with blue on cover.

I need to read The Women - Kristin Hannah and get the book back to my co-worker. This will be a good kick in the butt to do it.

I wouldn't mind a Wicked Purple King - I wonder, would that be like a rum drink? Or more sophisticated like a scotch?

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments I have two other books I've already read but not sure where I can add them to the mini. So, if anyone has any ideas, please tell me.

Clear by Carys Davies Darling Girls by Sally Hepworth

Clear takes place on an island in Scotland. Few characters: John, Ivar, Strachan, Mary. The cover has a HUGE wave, as you can see, and also a blue teapot in the water.

Darling Girls has 3 sisters who were all raised in a horrible foster care home: Jessica Lovat, Norah Anderson, and Alicia (forgot last name). The foster mom is Holly Fairchild. The pool on the cover is important in the story, but I don't want to say why to spoil it for anyone who wants to read it. It is SO good!!

Some of you are a LOT more creative than I am, so if we can use my books (at least Darling Girls since it has more pages) it would be great.

I added them both to Clear Blue Lagoon cocktail

Gwen|| Bookish Blondie (bookishblondie) | 48 comments I think we should move the Tom Lake book up to the Rue's Red Chaser Cocktail as it's set in a cherry orchard and Make it Rue's Cherry Red Chaser.

I put it that way in the tracker.

Then we have Clear Blue Lagoon for the other finished books.

Which leaves us one final cocktail with three books.

message 271: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments New hands are up!
I posted them on our tracker for April. My math skills were SO poor. I had to count them 5 times to make sure I got it right. But it's good now.

I changed one thing on the tracker - where I have "number needed," I did not include the color cards. I kept the color cards separate. I think that was confusing.

We have a new card - it's called "overload."

I will copy and paste the rules for that next.

message 272: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments April cards have been posted!

We all know and love/hate these cards. They're fun in the game if you are not the one having to draw the cards. Here, we all love the points they give but hate the additional cover colours we need to read.

◈ For April, all that changes.

Wild Draw 4 cards are no longer in play. You get OVERLOAD cards instead!

◈ What are Overload cards?

Overload cards are also cover colour cards, BUT they require different colours.
The colours you can use for Overload cards are the following:

- purple
- pink
- orange
- brown
- grey
- white
- black

You can only use each cover colour once . They are worth 30 points and don't have to fit any letters, only colours.

message 273: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments I put them after our color cards, and I put the other colors in the drop down menu.

message 274: by Melissa (last edited Mar 25, 2024 04:53PM) (new)

Melissa | 597 comments Go ahead and put some books on the table! Claim 1 - 3 colored cards to start off... we'll give everyone a few days and then claim the rest.

I'm plugging away at the cocktails - getting them on the official sheet. It's looking good.

We have an extra blue 4 for Brigia's book - if you can't finish The CoWorker, Brigia, that's okay! We have Firefly Lane.

We also have an extra yellow 1. I'll switch those books around if we need to by this Thursday or Friday.

message 275: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Mcmahon | 90 comments I've finished my yellow 1. I also just finished a black cover I added to the spreadsheet in case we can make another cocktail.

Ingeborg (redrum) | 410 comments I have returned to civilization and the Internet. Had a nice stay at our cabin. Cross-country skiing, some sun, some snow and time with family.

We seem to be doing well! Do we have all cards and mini tasks covered for March? Should I hold off on finishing new books till April? :) Haven't added any new books, and since I'm currently reading a brick of a novel, I'm very fine with just holding on to that until next month. It can work for an Overload card. It also has lots of characters, so it really fits many cards.

Melissa | 597 comments Welcome back Ingeborg! Cross-country skiing is the best. I am glad you had some good sun and time with your family.

We are covered for March! I've got a couple to finish, Vicki, Gwen, Jotsmar, and Brigia have one to finish and we'll be good. I'd hold off until April if you can :)

message 279: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments Melissa, is the one that I NEED to finish The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder? I am trying to figure out which books and in what order I need to finish for all my challenges by March 31.

Also, I thought I read somewhere that the OVERLOAD cards only have to have the color any portion of the book cover and doesn't have to be 50%. Is that correct?

message 280: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments Vicki :)
The one you need to finish is for the Wicked King cocktail.
Hold off on The Wager until April if you can! We've got a bunch of reverses there too.

Overload cards have to have the 50%. It was the cocktail cards where we could pick something off the cover to be for the card. (Like the red dress)

message 281: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments We have a couple of other books we could sub in for your Wicked King, if it doesn't work out - but I just love the Wicked King cocktail!!

I need to read The Wicked King by Mar 31 for another challenge, so I'll read that one and I can hold off on The Wager. I'll move it to April. Thanks. :)

Melissa | 597 comments Looks good folks!
I haven't heard from Brigia, so I moved Firefly Lane up to that slot.

message 284: by Brigia (new)

Brigia | 51 comments That works, too :) I did write a couple of days ago that I am going to finish in time and didn’t realize you waited to hear from me again, sorry!

message 285: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments Sorry Brigia! I somehow forgot!
I put The Coworker in for Dawn - as I don't think we have a Wicked King for March, so the drink is The Dawn of the Purple King :)
It would have been great for stiletto too! But the Purple King's Stepsister sounded too weird for a drink...

message 286: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments Folks are posting their drink write-ups here:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Anyone feeling creative for our menu? We can have mocktails too :)

Smaug's Pink Sunrise
Rue's Cherry Red Chaser
Golden Orange Firefly
The Purple King's Stiletto (I liked it better than the Dawn part, but I'm still game to change that name)
Orange Fire Glow
Blue Lemon Drop
Clear Blue Lagoon
The Ripped Bear

message 287: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments I'm thinking the Golden Orange Firefly has an orange soda with rum? or vodka? The soda for the fizz? Or maybe a blood orange spritzer? Not sure....

Melissa Mcmahon | 90 comments Melissa wrote: "I'm thinking the Golden Orange Firefly has an orange soda with rum? or vodka? The soda for the fizz? Or maybe a blood orange spritzer? Not sure...."

Yes that one does sound like something fizzy.

Here are a few cocktails that I think of from the names we came up with.

Smaug's Pink Sunrise -Tequila sunrise - Tequila, orange juice ( or a pink drink to substitute), grenadine
Rue's Cherry Red Chaser - this makes me think of fireball or like an old fashion? Haha
The Ripped Bear - White Russian - vodka, coffee liqueur, cream

Gwen|| Bookish Blondie (bookishblondie) | 48 comments Ideas:

Smaug's Pink Sunrise: A sweet and fruity cocktail with Vodka, grenadine, orange and pineapple juice and splash of peach schnapps.

Rue's Cherry Red Chaser:

The Purple King's Stiletto:

Gin

Blueberry LIquer

Grape Juice

Lemon Juice

Orange Fire Glow

Lime Juice

Muddled Jalapeno pepper

Blue Lemon Drop

Vodka

Lemon Juice

Simple Syrup

Blue Curacao

Clear Blue Lagoon:

Ripped Bear

Bourbon

Ginger LIquer

Lime Juice

Angostura Bitters

Melissa | 597 comments Gwen, I think you should open a bar. :) These sound tasty!
I think I like the ripped bear with coffee. So I'll do all of the ones of Gwen's except the ripped bear. I'll go with Melissa's coffee one for that.

Melissa | 597 comments Hello Ingeborg!

I have been reading some good books, some okay books.
Poisoned Water: How the Citizens of Flint, Michigan, Fought for Their Lives and Warned the Nation was good. It gave me a better idea of what happened in Flint, Michigan, US.

Now I'm reading Scythe and it's really captivating!
I'm also reading Where the Forest Meets the Stars and I'm really enjoying that too.

How about you?

How interesting! I've heard about the goings on in Flint, but not in much depth. Glad you've had some good books! :)

Both my current reads, Fool's Fate and Feet of Clay (audiobook) are great, so I'm having a good time reading. Both books are part of longer series, which I find very comforting - these are worlds and characters that I can return to, in new stories. So something is new, something is the same.

Thanks for the info about the NBRC challenges! I assume it'll show up there when they are ready for sign-ups. Last year I came straight off UNO into TT, and it was a fun challenge and helped me keep my reading inspiration through into summer.

message 298: by Ingeborg (new)

Ingeborg (redrum) | 410 comments Technical question. Currently reading an ebook version of Ship of Magic. I cannot find a goodreads edition to match precisely page number and cover. The ISBN (9780553900255) gives me a kindle edition, and I am reading on a kobo. Bought the book from the kobo store. Thus, it is not a kindle edition.

On kobo store page (and in the ebook details on the kobo) it says 998 pages, but the closest looking edition on goodreads says 896 pages. Which page number do I write for the spreadsheet? Which edition should I link? I'm not planning on using cover colour for anything, so I suppose it doesn't matter much, but this happens now and then and is a little confounding.
