Melissa | 597 comments How is everyone's weekend?
It's really cold here (4 F). I hope to sit and read for a couple hours today.
There is a football game we'll watch tonight. (Go Bills!)
That and preparing for the week ahead.

message 52: by Aidy (new)

Aidy | 7 comments My weekend was good. We had a bit of snow (5 inches or so) on Friday, but it cleared out pretty well for the weekend. Library book sale went well. Now we are looking at 60 F weather with some rain but should clear out the remaining snow.

Sorry about your Bills. It was a good game. Playoff football is fun.

I picked up a couple of books at the book sale and am holding on to them for UNO.

The only one I am confident about is Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
Yellow Skip, right?

message 53: by Ingeborg (new)

Ingeborg (redrum) | 410 comments Oh a late answer from me here. Weekend was good. Took it easy, but also spent some time with the horse. :) We did have quite a bit of snow and cold temps, but now a lot of it has melted/rained away and we have ice, ice everywhere. Fortunately crampons exist!

Are you all reading any fun books right now? Finishing up anything before February? I always find it a bit difficult to time that stuff precisely so I have something enjoyable to read for the whole month, but am finished in time for UNO.

message 54: by Brigia (new)

Brigia | 51 comments We have lots of rain, too, at the moment - great conditions for reading indoors lol

I am finishing up my January reads, I hope everything works out and I can start all fresh on February 1st!

message 55: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments Yes for crampons!
I'm teaching weather to my students right now - and we're covering all sorts of precipitation in real life. Sleet, freezing rain, rain and snow fell today...
Oh, the Bills. If it just wasn't a field goal..... still stings from many years ago....
Yellowface definitely works. Yellow skip is good.
I have a bunch of books I want to finish this weekend. One is going to be tough. Every time I open it, I fall asleep within 5 pages.....

Melissa | 597 comments Here's to another weekend! I will eventually have to try this charred gimlet!

Do we have the threads, yet? I have never done a buddy read in this group, do we just create threads in the buddy reads folder?

message 59: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments I'll ask the mods!

message 60: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments Yes - we create a thread in the buddy reads folder. I can do that now.

message 61: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments Just added it:) On my cell phone so I can’t link it here…

message 62: by David (new)

David Graybosch | 82 comments Hi All,

Just wanted to let everyone know, I haven't added any books to the tracker because the books I plan to read are all ones I haven't read before so I'm not sure yet what cards they will fit. My Uno shelf has been updated with what I have planed to read though.

Melissa | 597 comments https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...

The countdown is on!!
A little over 10 hours before we dive in!!

message 66: by Aidy (new)

Aidy | 7 comments Getting excited!

I think I have listed my January books here.

I can't start a book for UNO until after the countdown, right? So, any book I read tonight will not be able to count for our cards?

UNO starts at 4 in the morning my time, so I am not too worried, just want to get it right.

message 67: by Aidy (new)

Aidy | 7 comments I added links to the spreadsheet for the books I have planned so far. (I hope I did it right).

Is this the preferred way of posting books in this group?

message 68: by Brigia (new)

Brigia | 51 comments I am ready :) and excited to dive into new books this afternoon!

@Vicki: Let me know if you still want to buddy read Fourth Wing, I’m going to start today and can make the thread.

Yes!
With UNO, you can't start books until the start of the challenge (end of the countdown)

message 71: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments I am in Vegas on vacation and have been since Monday. I woke up at 3:50 this morning and decided to get up and read for UNO. lol I keep getting interrupted since my husband woke up but I am 70% finished. It's frustrating when you are in the middle of near the end of a book and you need to stop to make breakfast, drive to the store, etc. But I'll have my first book done shortly that wasn't even planned. lol I realized one of my NetGalley books is going to archive tomorrow so decided to get it read today. Thankfully it's really good.

@Brigia and Melissa, I've had a BR planned for quite awhile in another group. If you'd like to join, let me know and I'll PM you the link so as not to advertise another group in this thread. That being said, I don't think we get extra points for a BR for this challenge, do we?

message 72: by Brigia (new)

Brigia | 51 comments That’s fine Vicki, I’m also buddy reading Fourth Wing in another group :) I’m looking forward to reading Lady Tan with Melissa here. I’d still be interested what you think about the books, though!

Have a great vacation with lots of reading time ;)

I went over the SS and added my name to REVERSE for any books I've already read.

It makes it a lot easier than looking up every person on your team to see if they've read your books. lol

🤯

message 78: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments I know! I couldn't believe it fit all of them! lol I got lucky!

message 79: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Mcmahon | 90 comments I am excited to get started. I have not done much reading yet this year. Uno always motivates me!

I'm going to start with a Lisa Jewell novel. I have heard good things about this one.

None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell

message 80: by Ingeborg (new)

Ingeborg (redrum) | 410 comments I've started The Fragile Threads of Power (Threads of Power, #1) by V.E. Schwab and Soul Music (Discworld, #16; Death, #3) by Terry Pratchett and both are enjoyable so far. :)

message 81: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments I look forward to hearing how those books are!
I am reading a VE Schwab book too - Vicious (Villains, #1) by V.E. Schwab and it's REALLY dark. But I think I'm out of the darkest parts now? It feels more like a comic book - and I like that part better.

I'm reading Caste The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson which I've wanted to read for a while. It's very good.

message 82: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments Okay, I made a slight change to the tracker. I put our color books up top, and I figure we can claim these as we go along. Dave, I noticed that you claimed one below, and I thought, right, that's a good idea. So, I moved your book up to the top :)

I hope this will be easier!
and I'll stop ordering them by date read :) I thought that would make it easier, but I don't think it is....

Happy reading!! Happy weekend!!

message 83: by Brigia (new)

Brigia | 51 comments I like the new tracker, Melissa, It's easier this way to figure out what we need. I claimed a yellow book :)

I'm reading Fourth Wing (The Empyrean, #1) by Rebecca Yarros and loving it! Also, I'm listening to the audiobook Emily Wildes Enzyklopädie der Feen (Emily Wilde, #1) by Heather Fawcett and for nonficiton I'm working my way through the German edition of Butts A Backstory by Heather Radke . All three are very good reads, so far!

Once I'm finished with Emily Wilde, I'll start Lady Tan's Circle, Melissa! Have you started already? I'm also buddy reading Emily Wilde, so i had to start with that.

@Ingeborg: I've got The Fragile Threads of Power (Threads of Power, #1) by V.E. Schwab checked out from the library, but I'm not sure I'll be able to fit it in this month. Do you like it?

I read Vicious a few years ago. And the sequel. I liked them, they were quite intense! Dark and definitely fast-paced like a comic book. Schwab herself said that comic was the vibe she was going for with those books, so it's fun that this is what you're seeing as well. Apparently she's working on another in the series. I think it's meant to be a trilogy.

@Brigia - I just passed the halfway point of Threads of Power and I've been wavering on how I feel about it. There was a part that dragged a bit, but it's picked back up now. The writing is lovely and it is moody and suspenseful, it was just a tad to retrospective for a while. I liked the prequel trilogy okay, but it had a bit too much of a YA vibe toward the end with some characters. This one feels more mature and maybe better for it. We'll see! If you end up reading it, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

No, we don't get buddy read points.
Yes, PM me for your other group's thread :) please!

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments Melissa, I'm sorry I didn't see you post earlier...been so busy! It was just okay. I'm not big on Vegas but my BIL lives there. They had just gotten back from a trip and had gotten sick, so we only got to see them for about a 90 minute dinner out the night before we went home. It rained hard one day so we stayed in. It wasn't really warm enough to enjoy the pool area, so I mostly read while there which I love doing but I have to balance that with spending time doing things with Scott (my hubby). We made meals in our resort room all but the 3 times we went out to eat. We ate 1 Mexican meal, 1 Thai meal, and our dinner out with my husband's brother and his wife and I had salmon. The rest of our meals we did in our room. We didn't take in any shows this time, but my husband got a week off from work and he spent a little time in the hot tub so that was all he wanted...no work! lol

Nice. I think Vegas would be overwhelming, but I do love the lights when I see images on the Internet. How was the Mexican food? We don't have very many good Mexican restaurants here - and that's my favorite food choice :)

Melissa | 597 comments Happy first week of UNO!!
How's the reading going?
Anyone tried a "charred gimlet" yet?
The tracker looks great. I'm plunking things into the official spreadsheet - there's a link to it on our tracker. I might move things around yet, but so far, it's looking good!

message 92: by Ingeborg (new)

Ingeborg (redrum) | 410 comments Wow, one week down! I've finished 2 books, started 2 others and am having fun reading :) I claimed one of the colour cards as it turns out an audiobook I was planning on reading is blue enough.

Have not tried a gimlet yet, charred or otherwise. I'm not big on alcohol, to be perfectly honest, but mayhap it could be done as a mocktail.

Hope you've all had a good week and that your weekend is nice and relaxing.

Melissa Mcmahon | 90 comments Go team!

"None of this is True" lived up to the hype for me.

I also tracked down a book for Green 7.
It's a cozy mystery and is set in the 20s, so the cocktail might pair nicely 🍸🕵🏼‍♂️

A Lesson in Murder (A Lady Eleanor Swift Mystery, #7) by Verity Bright

Hope everyone is enjoying their reads!

message 94: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments Yes! I just finished The Ride of Her Life The True Story of a Woman, Her Horse, and Their Last-Chance Journey Across America by Elizabeth Letts which was a nice biography about Annie Wilkins who traveled by horse across the US in the late 1950s. It was a nice, gentle read, with an animal lovers bent to it.

I also read my first Maisie Dobbs book, which I really enjoyed too.

I read a couple of meh books, but that's okay :) I'm looking forward to getting to Lady Tan this week.

The Super Bowl is happening tonight! Gotta get ready :)

There is a mid-month mini challenge coming along soon! I'm going to read over the sneak peek during the commercials tonight.

For the directions - we have been told to be creative. Just imagine going to a secret bar (or coffee shop :) or tea shop :). Would you go DOWN the stairs or EAST towards Main Street?
It looks like fun! I always like to see if I can read something on my shelf and then pass it along.
