Alice-Elizabeth (Prolific Reader Alice) (marriedtobooks44) | 3 comments Hey everyone!

I'm new to the group, my name is Alice and I have lived with Anxiety for nearly 4 years. I created my book blog in the new year and joined the GR community and having a really good time being here. I read All The Bright Places a few months ago and really enjoyed it. Here's my book blog if you want to stop on by: https://marriedtobooksreviewsandblog....

I accept friend requests too!

Martha (marthais) Hey Alice, welcome and thanks for joining us!

I'll definitely be checking out your book blog, and glad to hear you enjoyed All the Bright Places - do feel free to share your thoughts on it in any of the discussion threads (assuming you can remember it - I would probably have trouble discussing something I'd read a few months ago actually!)

Any questions or suggestions, let me know :)

message 109: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide | 2 comments Hi there,
My name is Adelaide and I'm 16. My favorite thing in the world to do is to read, but I've been reading a lot less than usual since my last suicide attempt. I've had PTSD for almost three years, major depressive disorder for almost four, and I struggle with generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety disorder. I'd really like to get back into reading over the summer and would love any book recommendations anyone would like to give.

message 110: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthais) Welcome Adelaide and thank you for sharing a bit about yourself.

I wonder if you may find our recent group read, All the Bright Places, a bit triggering as it deals with suicide as a central theme. A lot of us really enjoyed it, so would recommend it based on that, but don't risk your recovery if you're not up to reading something like that yet.

Some books I've recently read and loved:
Rebecca
Everything, Everything
The Firebird
The Other Me
Station Eleven

Depends what kinds of things you like reading to be honest!

Looking forward to having you in the group, give me a shout if you have any questions or suggestions

Marina (sonnenbarke) Hi Adelaide, welcome! You have such a beautiful name :-)
If you tell us what kind of books or what genres you like to read, I'd be happy to give you recommendations.

message 112: by Ebani (new)

Ebani (butterfliesonmybookshelf) Hi I'm Ebani. Although I don't suffer from any disorders I find that they are interesting. I hope that doesn't offend anyone. I also really love books so I thought it'd be fun to join a group and converse with other book lovers. :)

message 113: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Hi Ebani, welcome. I think there's nothing wrong in having an interest in mental health - quite on the contrary in fact, I think there should be more people who take an interest in it despite not being affected by any disorder.

message 114: by Ebani (new)

Ebani (butterfliesonmybookshelf) Thank you, Marina. It's good to feel accepted. I'm so excited to be in the group!

message 115: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthais) We've had quite a few new members joining over the last few weeks, welcome all! Please do come and introduce yourselves and/or jump into some of the discussions so we can get to know each other better :)

message 116: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay Fischer | 1 comments Hello all.

I'm a 33 year old survivor of domestic violence who overcame (well, as much as one can) PTSD and Body Dysmorphia in three years of trauma therapy after leaving my abuser.

I do a lot of advocacy work in the realm of DV and - now - infertility (hello, stress) as my husband and I are trying to conceive but will begin IVF testing/prep work in August.

Glad to find fellow book lovers who are so willing to discuss their own battles. :)

message 117: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthais) Welcome Lindsay, delighted to have you here and thanks for sharing a bit about yourself. Give me a shout if you have any questions or suggestions for the group, or please do jump in to any of the discussion threads or start your own! :)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Hi Lindsay, welcome! Great to have an active advocate for such important themes.

Hey Lindsay, just remembered you're starting your fertility treatment this month - good luck! I know from family members that it can be challenging but obviously we all hope it'll be worth it in the end. Look after yourself and if you want to share how it's going, we'd love to keep updated! xx

message 120: by James (new)

James Brighouse (jamesbrighouse) | 1 comments Hello everyone :)
I'm 19 years old and been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder with secondary depression and anxiety. I've been sectioned and in hospital voluntarily on numerous occasions and I'm now on a cocktail of antidepressants and antipsychotics. I joined this site after rekindling my love for books after not having the concentration span to finish a single page and when I found this group I thought, why not? Would love to make some friends, come out of my shell and read some good books!

message 121: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthais) Hi James, welcome! Thanks for sharing a bit about yourself and delighted to hear you've rediscovered books, I had a similar moment this time last year :) I hope you enjoy being part of the group, please do get stuck in!

message 122: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Hi James, welcome! I have the same diagnoses as you, with a couple other psychiatric disorders as well. We all hope you'll like the group :-)

message 123: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, I'm Kit and I live in the UK with my wife and rescue dog. I don't have any mental health problems but I was a mental health therapist for a number of years, so I may be able to contribute to the group in some way. However, I'm not a therapist in any way now. These days I run a small business and try to get involved in good causes whenever I can, usually in respect of helping animals.

Tanya Peterson (tanyajpeterson) Hey Crumpet and everyone in the group who might see this!

I'm really happy to have found you. I'm excited -- this group is right up my alley. I tend to find myself watching from afar on Goodreads and elsewhere, but I'm at the point where I'd like to engage with people and "talk" -- exchange ideas, thoughts, ups, downs, and of course book thoughts. I think I've started in the right place!

A bit about me: After a car accident and traumatic brain injury, followed by a couple of subsequent concussions in following months, I found myself going downhill. I was in a behavioral health hospital several times and ended up the the diagnoses of bipolar 1 disorder and anxiety disorders (social anxiety was the most troubling). I've been a high school teacher and a counselor, and now I'm a mental health writer. I've written for The Mighty, and I have a weekly anxiety column on HealthyPlace.com.

I'm not here to self-promote. I did see in the introductory information that authors can list their books. I write novels about mental illness, so I just might put them up there.

I'm here because I love books, mental health, and I'm looking forward to meeting people. :)

message 129: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthais) Welcome Tanya! Please do get stuck in and enjoy the group :)

message 130: by Tanya (new)

Tanya Peterson (tanyajpeterson) Thanks, Martha! I'm happy to already be stuck and enjoying!

message 131: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Hi Tanya, welcome! I sometimes read both The Mighty and Healthy Place, so I might have stumbled on your articles. Glad to have you here :-)

message 132: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) PS. Tanya, I'm looking at your profile page and see you write the Anxiety-Schmanxiety blog on Healthy Place, so I've definitely read your articles, although I'm not a regular follower :-)

message 133: by Will (new)

Will Cawkwell | 2 comments HI! I'm Will, i have suffered with anxiety my whole life, sometimes it's gotten pretty dark although right now i'm doing really well.
Currently studying towards a degree in health and social care.
Big book lover but i'm the only one in my circle of friends who reads so i don't have anyone to talk books with.
Always eager to get recommendations for new reading material.

message 137: by Tanya (new)

Tanya Peterson (tanyajpeterson) Hi Marina! sorry for the delayed response. I try not to let that happen, but I'm not always successful. :) I'm still very happy to be part of this group!

I think it's cool that you've read some of my articles on Anxiety-Schmanxiety! I love that we have a bit of a connecrion already! I'm looking forward to interacting with you and others here!

message 139: by Livia (new)

Livia (musicgeek4891) Hi there, everyone! My name is Livia. I have been suffering from depression since the age of 13 (I am now 25, will be 26 in April). This year I hit absolute rock bottom. I was able to get out of an abusive relationship, but still had feeling for him, as it usually goes. Not 3 weeks later, a friend got a hold of me to tell me he died in a freak car accident, so that took a big toll on me. I had to put down 2 of my pets this year, and my most recent boyfriend dumped me not a week before my birthday, then called me 2 days after my birthday to tell me he was dating someone else and in love with her. Needless to say, all the emotions just came crashing down on me, and I ended up being taking to the emergency room for suicidal ideation.

I told myself I wouldn't let that control me, and since then, I have slowly been trying to pick myself up. I started back at school this fall, pursuing my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and absolutely love it. I think based on my history, it will be a great job for me.

A little bit more about me and who I am, I am a big music geek. My undergrad was in music, so counseling has been a big change for me in school, but I got this! I go on and off of reading a lot, but I'm hoping being on this site will help me to want to read more often. I am a tattoo nut, I currently have 4. I'm working on finishing the most recent one I got, and also working with my tattoo guy to design another one that I will hopefully be getting in the next few months. I'm really big into spirituality and self-awareness, so I try to read a lot on those things. Otherwise, my favorite genre is also my guilty pleasure, YA sci-fi. Speaking of sci-fi, I am a HUGE Whovian. I started watching Doctor Who when I was picking myself back up, so in a way, it's kind of helped to save my life a bit. I even met Matt Smith (Eleven) this October and gave him a huge hug! :)

Um, I can't really think of anything else right now... I'm really excited to see what this group has to offer and look forward to getting to know some more people! :)

message 140: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthais) Welcome Livia, thank you for telling us a bit about yourself. Sounds like you really have had a crappy 2016 but it's fantastic that you've been able to make something out of it with the Masters and hopefully use your experiences to help others.

I also love music and a tattoos! There's a thread knocking around somewhere about live music - do jump in there and tell us about the music you've seen.

Enjoy the group, get stuck in and feel free to start new threads as well as participate in current ones

message 141: by Jen (new)

Jen | 2 comments Hi! I'm new here! My name is Jen. I am living with depression, anxiety and PTSD. My fiance struggled with depression for years unbeknownst to me, and 6 years ago chose to end his own life. Since then, I have been ingesting as much information about psychology, depression, psychosis and related material as possible. Comfort and understanding - in bits and pieces - is what I gain from this lifelong quest for more knowledge and experience. I have been inspired by my experience and my learnings and thus am seeking a career change into the mental health profession to try and help others coping with the same. Reading is an outlet for me. The genre is where I belong at this point in my life.

message 142: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthais) Welcome Jen, thanks for sharing a bit about yourself. Good on you for taking your experience and turning it into a career change, best of luck with it!

message 143: by Tina (new)

Tina White Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a self help reading book junkie. I like reading self help books, and all while reading I take notes all along in hopes I'll be able to take something away from the books and apply it to my everyday life to better it.

I suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Depression, and ADHA

message 144: by Tina (new)

Tina White I'm also a Chaplain and very involved in my church and the community.

Faith Hey friends,

My name is Faith. I'm an avid, stay up until 2 am, book reader. I'm obsessed with seeing as much of the world as possible. I also have generalized anxiety disorder and depression.

I'm on a journey of overcoming and putting my journey into a book...so wish me luck on that.

I'm here to get recommendations, take part in great discussion, and learn some new things to help me on my journey.

Blessings!
