I read this book in the 90s, and believe it was probably published around that time, although it might have been published earlier. I would guess that I read it between 1994-1998.

A boy called Sam starts a new school. On his first day he befriends his classmate, a black boy who is a wheelchair user named Jason (after Sam tries to push his wheelchair to be helpful and Jason tells him that he doesn't need his help). At some point he visits Jason's home and the kitchen is described as having lower counters to be accessible. I believe Jason may have been a reporter for the school newspaper.

There is a loose group of friends. Some of them are on the school football team. Something is stolen (I think it might be the football trophy) and Jason wants to report on it/try to solve the case. The kids suspect the school bully and I think they try following him/spying on him.
