If you have a direct quote from a book like this, you can try typing part of it in quotes into Google Books and seeing if you get a match - that's how I found this one just now.
I agree, The American Roommate Experiment. Like literally this *has* to be it. I didn't make it all the way through, because it is kinda dirty, but I am sure that this is it.
