Educating Alice: Adventures of a Curious Woman – Alice Steinbach
4 stars
Review: I read Steinbach's Without Reservations: The Travels of an Independent Woman over 10 years ago and it is on my Keeper shelves as a favorite armchair travelers read.
While reading this book I stopped at several points to look up information about the author and place her travels in context. I had trouble setting up a timeline. Each of the places she writes about here are set in a context of time of year and length of stay but not as a continuum or even a hint of whether they are in order or in connected travel. I have the feeling they are selected stays from a few years of travel unlike the one continuous time frame in the earlier book.
Alice has a way of connecting with people and exploring an area without moments of anxiety that I find when I travel. I lack the assurance she has acquired in her years as a reporter and would find much of this intimidating. Thus the reason I am an armchair traveler.
The stays are all interesting in their way but not a journey of personal discovery as the first book was. This book will join the other on my shelves but not with the same affection.

The number for January is:
#12

Enjoy the time with your parents. Time with loved ones is precious.

Whiskers Of the Lion – P L Gaus – 3***
This is book number nine in the Amish-Country Mystery series, but the first one I’ve read. It was an interesting mystery with a great cast of (I presume) regular characters. Readers who might assume that “Amish” means a cozy mystery will be wrong. This is a hard-hitting crime novel, that happens to be set amid the Amish communities of Ohio. I would recommend reading the series in order, beginning with number one.

See What I Have Done – Sarah Schmidt – 2.5**
Schmidt’s debut novel takes a look at one of the most infamous crimes in American history – the 1892 axe murders of Andrew and Abby Borden in Fall River, Massachusetts. I’m not sure I really liked the way in which Schmidt chose to tell this story. It felt very disjointed and left me with more questions than answers.
