My mom took the book away part way thru so I never finished it and it’s all blurry. Possible scene where side character goes to find a witch that lives in the woods for an abortion potion/herbs. The other scene I remember is during a difficult birth and the midwife makes the main character reach in and feel baby’s positioned wrong and maybe try to turn it? She doesn’t want to/is scared. The cover was dark, maybe red and black possibly had a blonde girl in a black dress on it? I remember a medallion of some sort as well on the cover. I wish I could remember more but I was maybe 12 or 13… I hope this isn’t some fever dream or multiple books mixing together in my memory. Please help I have been looking for it for years!

Amanda Lambert | 2 comments The cover: if it was a girl on it I think it was close up with her face hidden, or only partially visible

Adele | 1435 comments Sounds like The Midwife's Apprentice It's a Newbery Medal book so that would be the medallion. There are many different editions, but most show a girl with a head covering. This one is kind of like you describe: The Midwife's Apprentice by Karen Cushman

Google Books preview of The Midwife's Apprentice by Karen Cushman - Adele's suggestion:
- There are different cover images.
Kirkus Review:
- "During the Middle Ages, an itinerant girl of about 12 or 13 who knows "no home and no mother and no name but Brat" finds refuge one night by burrowing into a village dung heap where the warm, rotting muck will protect her from the bitter cold.
In the morning she is taken in by a sharp-tongued woman who turns out to be Jane, the midwife. Brat is such a hard worker that before long she is accompanying Jane to birthings, where she cleans up after the work is done and acts as the midwife's "gofer" whenever necessary. Jane begins to trust her with some of the secrets of her trade..."
