One of my favorite books by Kevin Brockmeier is The Brief History of the Dead. All who die go to the City. You stay there as long as someone remaining on Earth remember you. When all forget, you disappear. I still find this book haunting today.

The author took off in a bunch of directions, mostly exploring isolation, loneliness, relationships with God or other higher powers.
