A children’s book that my family read in the 1990s. Most likely published in the 90s but could be earlier. Definitely before 2000. There is a man on the moon, he is illustrated as a man, not a face on the moon. I believe he manages the moon of lights it up? And he has to leave a woman on the ground below. Or maybe he was stuck on the moon and can’t get to her. But she stands outside and they look at one another or communicate while apart. Simple illustrations from what I can remember.

Moon Man by Tomi Ungerer doesn't have a wistful woman in it. :) Just to help rule some out in advance.
Thanks for responding. The Tomi Ungerer book has come up in all my google searches. Not it, but looks really interesting! Might order a copy of it just to check it out. :) The man was separate from the moon, never illustrated as being the moon. Again, thanks so much for helping me in my search! Very appreciated.
