Tami (tamicarvallo) | 6987 comments Hello, I'm a librarian but need help with this series of shorts. I have read them all and have read all the books in the main series but I'm not sure that these "shorts" are valid per Goodreads policies, some were published at the back of a specific edition and later published online, others were not. I'm unsure so I thought it was best to ask in the group before I mess things up. I don't know if these shorts are valid or not because they are bonus/extras regardless of them being published online or not. The policy is not clear to me.

I want to point out that the shorts have covers against policies, some of the pdf files do have official covers [none of which were uploaded to Goodreads] but people created the book records with the covers for the actual books that contain the bonus content or where the content would fit in the story. So I think the covers should all be removed. There are also fanmade covers for various editions that were added by users, none of these are official. I don't know if the can/should be removed. Edit: I'm thinking a superlibrarian would have to merge most of these because even if they are valid there should only be one, not multiple.

The main series is https://www.goodreads.com/series/4705...
The shorts series [not an official series, only Fallen is the actual series] https://www.goodreads.com/series/6701...

I did my best to find out where each story comes from and these are my findings:

1 - Daniel & Luce: The Perfect Date -> it was only published here: https://ellzreadz.blogspot.com/2010/0...

2 - Daniel's First Sighting -> it was published at the back of the Torment paperback UK edition.

3 - Before the Fire -> Torment Amazon exclusive and later posted for free here: https://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/image...

4 - What Happened To Trevor -> only available at the back of some editions of Torment.

5 - Daniel in L.A. -> Torment Walmart exclusive, also posted online for free here https://web.archive.org/web/201110181...

6 - Arriane's Day Out -> as far as I know was only publicly available on the publisher's Facebook, it was taken down but here's the link http://www.facebook.com/notes/fierceb...

7 - Daniel and Gabbe's Fight -> Torment Target exclusive, later posted online for free here although taken down now: https://www.randomhouse.com/teens/fal...

8 - A Date with an Outcast -> I was unable to find any information regarding the origin of this short story.

9 - Cam Goes Hunting -> Passion Amazon exclusive, it was probably posted for free on Amazon like the link above but I've been unable to find the original and could only find the original file on scribd https://www.scribd.com/document/97204... There's an edition in Spanish here on Goodreads but that was never available in Spanish.

10 - Inside Francesca's Office -> Passion Target exclusive, it was probably posted for free on like the one above but I've been unable to find the original and could only find the original file on this site https://app.box.com/s/29444032e02d330...

11 - Shelby's Journal -> Passion Hastings exclusive, later posted online for free https://web.archive.org/web/201209131...

12 - Miles in the Dark -> Passion Walmart exclusive, it was probably posted for free on like the one above but I've been unable to find the original and could only find the original file on this scribd https://www.scribd.com/document/97204...

13 - Shelby’s First Glimpse -> Passion Indiebound exclusive, posted online for free https://web.archive.org/web/201106121... and here is the official post https://web.archive.org/web/201106060...

14 - Daniel on Trial -> Passion Books-A-Million exclusive, it was probably posted for free on like the one above but I've been unable to find the original and could only find the original file on this scribd https://www.scribd.com/document/97204...

15 - Daniel's Gift -> This was a short story offered by the Australian publisher to those who registered on their Facebook page as part of promo for Rapture. As soon as 10,000 registrants were reached, they got the story emailed to them. Source: https://web.archive.org/web/201207260...

16 - Daniel's Journal -> This story was first included in some editions of Torment. It was later posted by the UK publisher on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note... now taken down

17 - Luce and Daniel's Date -> I was unable to find if this short was ever available for free which leads me to think it never was, it was officially published on this story collection Angels in the Dark though which includes only 7 shorts out of the 17 posted here.

Angels in the Dark includes [in order]: What Happened to Trevor, Arriane's Day Out, Daniel in L.A., Miles in the Dark, Inside Francesca's Office, Cam Goes Hunting, and Luce and Daniel's Date.

If you have questions let me know. It just seemed like a lot of books to mark invalid that I'm not entirely sure about, only about those that were only available at the back of a specific edition or Facebook or sent via email but it doesn't hurt to have confirmation and if someone finds further information they can post it here.

For reference this is an old reply on the group about this same issue https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... apparently no one picked it up a researched on it. Ten years later here I come xD.

The Reader | 11 comments The Librarian Manual considers shorts that meet all of the following (Ref: https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/...
"- Complete, i.e. not in-progress works
- Published online as specified short fiction (i.e. not a 'bonus'), including standalones shorts published on the author's own website
- Published separately (i.e. not part of an online anthology / collection)
Note: Valid short stories may only be added in their language of publication. I.e. If a valid short story only exists in Spanish, then an English version may not be added until it is published in a valid form."

With the word "bonus", I believe the following definitions of a non-book item (Ref: https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/...) apply:
"- Extras only published at the back of a specific book edition
- Individual works that are only available for purchase as bundled with another, primary work"
There was no mention in the Manual about excluding shorts based on or related to another primary work.

I may be wrong, so I'd love to know what others in the group think.

Tami (tamicarvallo) | 6987 comments Thanks for your input. I think I agree with most of what you wrote except these two:

1. I don't think it's valid because the non-book items page lists "Blog posts" as invalid under "Shorts" https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/... and that's a blog post.

15. I think it's invalid because it was only available via email which I think falls under "Stories only available via subscription to a newsletter, or via a website that requires registration"

Though when I consider this from the manual "Published online as specified short fiction (i.e. not a 'bonus'), including standalones shorts published on the author's own website" I think these could all be considered bonus content. In fact, they are but the definition is not all clear to me on what is considered a bonus and when that could be a standalone short. If these are all bonuses then they are all invalid.

1. I missed that policy. Thank you for pointing that out. I am wondering, though, what the rationale is for excluding shorts published in blogs. What if the blog post is meant to be a short story and not a mere blog article or essay?

15. Thanks for this, too. But, we need to register before we can buy or download ebooks more often than not. Why are we excluding short stories obtained that way? How about long "stories" with no print copies and available only as an ebook on bookselling sites where buyers of course need to register first prior to purchase or download? If a story book on Amazon does not have a print version, then does that mean it is not a valid book item because Amazon users need to register first prior to accessing it? The use of the word "stories" did not specify the story length, so it could also mean to invalidate long stories or novels as well?

Nonetheless, policies are what they are and have their purpose. Thus, thanks again. I only wish things are clearer.

The definition is vague to me too, so I am curious to know what the verdict is.

Cheers and happy new year!

Tami (tamicarvallo) | 6987 comments No problem, and sorry for the late reply :c Happy New Year!

I added Att. Jaclyn to the topic title. I think we need an official ruling for these as it isn't clear, and haven't gotten more replies.

About 1. I think Rivka [former moderator] explained it. I vaguely recall but the search is broken and can't find it on Google. I don't know if it means a blog post isn't a short story [thus invalid] or a short story published in a blog post is not valid.

15. Books that are sold usually have isbn and asin numbers so they are valid. Books without identifiers are valid too because not all books have isbn. Amazon ebooks [short or long] are valid because they have asin so it's not the same situation. Amazon also owns Goodreads. We can't get info from booksellers unless they are an Amazon subsidiary. This is the list of acceptable sources: https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/... each case has to be examined individually.

Update here that I'm talking to the team about this shorts series. Upon first glance I think that these are not valid, but I'll loop back with more information once I have it.

Yup, consensus is that these books are not valid per Goodreads policies.

Thanks for your patience Tami. We can mark these as invalid, or you can email support if you'd like us to take care of it!
