story geared towards grownups about a teacher and student

sorry i dont know much about this book/story as i was about ten when i read it so its very hazy. all i recall is a one room schoolhouse teacher visits a students house because he misses a lot. the dad doesnt care. there's a picture of the mom on the wall. the kid supposedly has her eyes. he is mixed with native american. the dad is white. and then for some reason she leaves for good?? on a steam engine train. he rides his horse alongside the train as she leaves town. (my dad horded Reader's Digest and my mom tossed them as she would find his stashes) the degas on back cover is possibly dance class??
