Alexander Marmon | 2 comments It’s been several years since I read this book and my memory of it is very vague. I believe the cover was him in a brown rove with a staff with his back turned and he was overlooking something like mountains and an ocean or something.

Was the MC a teenage boy?

Alexander Marmon | 2 comments I read it around 2012-2015 and the MC was in his 20s or early 30s. And not the ember blade unfortunately

Rainbowheart | 28553 comments Are you sure this is YA?

It sounds more like adult fiction if the MC is an adult man.

Robert (ricroscupshigh) | 539 comments The Magic of Recluce, by L.E. Modesitt Jr. includes a young man who travels and masters his magic while learning carpentry.

Your cover description is somewhat reminiscent of earlier editions of Lyndon Hardy's Master of the Five Magics and Secret of the Sixth Magic; as also, Elizabeth H. Boyer's The Sword and the Satchel. I don't think carpentry features in any of them, though.
