SOLVED. YA Crime novel following a girl who solves a Murder. Read around 2007-2008. Spoilers ahead. [s]

Hi everyone! I read a book in school around 2007 or 2008. It was about a girl who (I think) has visions from the life of a murdered girl. She ends up finding her stepfather or mother’s boyfriend forging her or her mother’s signature at some point. She goes on a hike or a field trip (again, this was 15+ years ago) and either she or her dog end up finding bones that end up belonging to the murdered and missing girl. I believe it ended up being her stepdad or mother’s boyfriend that was the killer. There was a line that stuck with me, where when she looked into the killer’s eyes, it was like “looking into black pools” or something like that. I know this might be a long shot, but I remember it being a really good book and would love to find it again.
