Mary Ann (bellabellacat) | 160 comments "*NEW*Print editions must be at least 175 pages. If reading an ebook, the ebook book must be at least 250 pages." Question on this - wouldn't the kindle version of a book typically have the same pages as the print version of the exact same book? I feel like I'm missing something here.

message 152: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments Print pages and kindle pages are very different. Ebooks are based on the number of times, you flip the screen. In the past, we had you basing your page count on a print edition to try and even the experience out for everyone.

message 153: by Mary Ann (new)

Mary Ann (bellabellacat) | 160 comments Thanks, and I realize print and kindle pages are different. And kindle pages are different depending on font size. What I don't see is if it's the exact same book just in a different form (kindle vs print) why the different page number requirement. To me, 75 pages is a big difference. If the book is published only as an Ebook it makes sense. Sorry to be so thick headed.

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments Just trying to even out the playing field so that we're all putting in the same effort. Likely, it's not going to affect every book you want to read.

I had marked No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality in on illness theme. The hardcover is 256 pages, but the Kindle (which I have) is 231 and doesn't fit the requirement. (Remember, it's based on the edition you read.) So I will read something else for the task. No big deal. I'll still read this but not use it for the challenge.

Jayme | 4519 comments Hi Janice -
question about Inspired by literature: Nala & Dean
Task: read a book about Ancient Greece or Rome

I'm interested in reading a book on philosophy Meditations author Marcus Aurelius who was a Roman Emperor almost 2000 years ago, or were you thinking only of works of fiction?

Thanks

message 156: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments Even though it's written by a Roman Emperor, it's not about Ancient Greece/Rome. It's philosophy.

The book can certainly be non-fiction, it just needs to be about Greece/Rome.

Lori Z | 2086 comments Okay, I'm probably overthinking this, but I have a question for Category 1 - Pilgrimages Tour of Slovania etc.
For the Finish - Dubrovnik: Task: Read a book that was made into a movie. Does it matter what forum for the movie? For instance does it only have to be a major motion picture or can it be made for TV or one of the streaming forums? Also, some of those other forums make one book into a series. Would that count?
Sorry for babbling. Thanks for all you do and bringing us another great challenge!

Yes, to everything.

Roz | 4529 comments Good to know, Janice. I started watching Fool Me Once on Netflix based on Harlan Coben’s book Fool Me Once and wondered if I could use it for the task. (If I get that far)

Katrisa | 4460 comments For Nazareth - House on cover does the whole outline of the house have to show or will this work?
Three Sisters by O.J. Mullen

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments Katrisa wrote: "For Nazareth - House on cover does the whole outline of the house have to show or will this work?

Let's go with the outline of a house. I look at that cover and think "windows", not "house".

message 162: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4460 comments I was looking for books tagged as gothic and I just wanted to make sure that we can click the "...more" on the main page where one or two more genres show up (not the "show all")

message 163: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments If Gothic is the required genre, then it needs to show on the main book page without have to click the "...more" link.

message 164: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4460 comments I know the rules say for a word in the title you can use plurals with -s or -es but I was wondering if -ies counts (like if a word ends in y). Can I use a book with bodies in the title for the task that says you need the word body?

message 165: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments Yes, that will work Katrisa. Plurals such as mouse to mice where the word changes entirely are not allowed.

I hadn't really considered a bird's-eye view of a train. but the book blurb makes it clear that it's a train. So... I'll accept this cover.

Thanks! The book sounds really interesting and I think I have read all the books I own with trains on the cover already and I was hoping to read something new!

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 2277 comments Janice I am just checking for Badge 2 if I am doing 3 walks can I be working on each walk at the same time as long as I do the individual walks in order

message 178: by Ammee (new)

Ammee Radebaugh | 130 comments I have a couple questions about the Moria checkpoint.

First would Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn be 75%. Just looking at it i would think yes but I want to be sure.

Also for the if Gone Girl is okay to use I was thinking I was Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn as the second book. I was thinking about Rebel (Legend, #4) by Marie Lu with the connection being the black background. Would that work for the the third book or do I need to keep looking?

message 179: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Feb 07, 2024 04:56PM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Hi Ammee. We tend to use a website called Tin Eye to check these sorts of questions out. Otherwise Janice would spend all her time eyeballing our books and not reading her own! The website is here https://labs.tineye.com/color

I go to the book page, right click on the cover image and open it in to a new tab. I then copy that URL into Tin Eye, and hit extract. The next bit is important, uncheck the two Exclude Background Colour options (as this is what we are very much interested in this question). And you get a break down of every colour on the book.

For your first option, Gone Girl, it says the cover is 90.1% black. Give it a go, and see if they all link how you want.

Thank you I had tried the website before and it lead me to the payment options so I thought I had to pay a lot of money to use it. I didn't see the link hidden to use the color lab.

Thanks Rusalka for responding. Tineye is the site we use to determine if the cover will fit those types of prompts.

So Gone Girl will fit the task.
Sharp Objects will connect to it because it also has a black cover, but also because they are written by the same author.
I don't think Rebel has enough black to count. but you could connect it to Sharp Objects because both authors are female .

Katrisa | 4460 comments Hi all - does anyone have any suggestions for a book with a wedding that isn't romance-y or or cozy mystery? I thought I would get around having to read a book like that by searching for wedding thrillers, but the book I chose ended up not actually having the ceremony because of stuff going awry so I won't actually be able to use the book for that after all and the more I look at wedding thrillers it seems like that is often the case.

I've got Murder at an Irish Wedding for that task.

Jane Eyre comes immediately to mind.
Rebecca
The Princess Bride
Alias Grace (I don't really remember all that clearly, but it seems to me that Grace got married in the book)
The Blood of Flowers

I'm sure there are more, but I was shocked as I scrolled through my read books, how little I remember about them.

Dallas gets married in one of the early "in death" books maybe number 2 or 3

Margo | 11628 comments I've just finished The Namesake. Good literary fiction with at least weddings in it.

message 188: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4460 comments Those are some great suggestions, but I have read most of them, I may do a reread though - then at least I will know ahead of time if there is a wedding!

LOL! I can always trust that you'll try and push the boundaries. I guess an elopement is still a wedding, even if it's just the two people in front of a J.P. and witnesses. It's your lucky day.

Marie - Janice posted an example of how we need to request in the first post in the request badge thread. She stated that we need to include the links. You can see her example in her post here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
