message 2: by Morgan (new)

Morgan Rose | 89 comments I read Twilight when the first movie came out and it’s been a long time since I read it. Personally, I would not read it myself again now being that I’m not into vampire stories(i have a few exceptions to that like the vampire diaries) and some of what happens is cringy. I will say, it is popular for a reason and if you’re into the vampire romance story, I’d say go for it and bypass the cringe. Not every story is perfect but again, it’s all a preference thing.

Lynn | 130 comments I really enjoyed it if for nothing else the atmosphere it portrayed. I’m re-reading some of my older books to re-do my reviews, and I may do the Twilight series next. I thought it was a lot fun and a great story. It could have been shorter.

message 4: by Nat (new)

Nat | 143 comments I only read it this year for the first time because my sister insisted. While it’s cringey and definitely built for that young teenager I think it’s still probably worth it to read. I don’t even like vampire stories but it’s so iconic it’s kind of necessary to have it under your belt and the writing is pretty good, mostly when the action picks up. They aren’t hard to get through either.

Shelby Kay | 29 comments It’s definitely a fun read cringe and all! I haven’t read them since the movies were coming out but it’s a fun to story to get lost in. Just don’t go into it expecting no plot holes or a perfect story. It’s like watching a Disney Original Movie and expecting Oscar winning performances. Sometimes you just want something fun and a bit silly and twilight can be perfect for that 😊

message 8: by modeziree. (new)

modeziree. (wheredowegonow) I'm reading it rn and i just finished the 2nd book and it is SO GOOD I totally recommend it and ther only thing i dont really like is that the main character is kinda cringey and pick-me like but other than that i LOVEEEE it!!!

message 9: by Sam (new)

Sam K (zutara123) | 251 comments They aren't perfect but I sure had a fun time reading them. I'm gonna read midnight sun too. I was thinking of reading it while also re-reading twilight since it's the same events but from Edward's pov.

message 10: by Tanu (new)

Tanu (sarcasmiclife) the books are definitely better than the movies but I do not like them anymore. nonetheless do read them if you want to buy I will recommend vampire academy and bloodlines in addition to Twilight saga

message 11: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Moscoe | 2 comments Don't take it all super seriously, and you will have a fun time!

message 12: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Green-Kingery | 70 comments Did not care for Bella. I prefer Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse vampire series or Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. Both are full of dark laugh-out-loud humor.

message 13: by Mo :) (new)

Mo :) | 2 comments Though I understand that it can be a "cringy" read, the Twilight series is what got me into reading as much as I do today, though with the help of The Harry Potter Series. And though I haven't reread it since I was probably 12-13 years old, I feel like it is such an iconic story that is well-known in our generation and the information in the books add a lot more to the rewatching of the movies which I rewatch all the time :)

message 14: by LadyRemy (new)

LadyRemy | 21 comments I believe that they are iconic for teen vampire reads. A lot of grammar mistakes. There's a lot about the story that I would say isn't cringe so much as upon rereading comes off as bright red flags for characters like Edward and Sam. I'd read the series just for the pop culture cornerstone it was in YA fiction.

Dee Turner | 17 comments In a sense, everything is worth reading, if for no other reason than to learn what one prefers--and why. I read the entire Twilight series and felt the author was really just proselytizing her Mormon faith. Vampires can't have babies, but because that's an absolute requirement for women, Bella has one, even as a vampire. And this series breaks all the time-honored traditions about vampires: these can stand in the sun, garlic's not an issue, on and on. Breaking our time-honored myths to reinforce tenets of faith--is that a good thing? I found the sprint toward hetero-normal rules (despite the alleged monsters) disgusting. What does it teach preteen girls who read it? That they must rely on some guy and make babies for him, whatever the cost. Haven't we had quite enough of THAT?

message 16: by Meg (new)

Meg | 23 comments Also did not care for this series, Bella was marginal and I really didn't like the vampires. I also vote for Charlene Harris's Sookie Stackhouse was a lot more fun and excitement. Twilight was totally too juvenile and angsty and the characters too meh.

message 17: by Tanja (new)

Tanja | 315 comments I only made it half through the first book because it bored me to death. I like vampire stories but not like this. I enjoy the vampire chronicles by Anne Rice

message 18: by Priscilla (new)

Priscilla Black | 46 comments Personally I think that you should read it at least once, just to know what everyone's talking about.

message 19: by Elythrim (new)

Elythrim I'm reading the first one rn!! The first twilight movie is my favorite of all time so it was about time I read the book too. The red flags are kinda expected but it's still fun to read, so give it a try!

Aditi ~ readwaditi (readwaditi) | 66 comments Lol never read Twilight, only watched the movies

message 21: by Karen (new)

Karen (rhyta) If you want a silly paranormal series, then Twilight is for you.
I found it pretentious and annoying.

I was working in a library when Twilight was popular and decided to read other vampire series to see how they compared. There are several that are much better (in my opinion) and don't insult your intelligence like Twilight.

One that is not all that well known is Tanya Huff's Blood series. It takes place in Canada (which is a nice change of scene) and features a former detective Vicky Nelson who has been forced to leave the police force due to a medical condition. Through a series of strange events, she meets a real vampire and they work together to solve some gruesome murders. It goes on through at least 4 books. There is a romantic triangle but these are adults and the relationships are too. Highly recommend this for an intelligent twist on the genre.

If you want some humor, then try the Sookie Stackhouse series, very funny, especially the recurring character Bubba (it's set in the South).

message 22: by Noorj (new)

Noorj | 43 comments I haven't read them either

message 23: by Alex (new)

Alex Henderson hahaaaa great question. i mean it's horrid, HORRID writing (even for me who is not a native english speaker) but at the same time it has that nice fanfiction quality of capturing the sensibilities of a teenage girl, also of someone with, like, attachment issues (fixating on one, mysterious romantic interest, longing to be saved and to be different, etc., if you have some sort of childhood trauma like that, it might speak to you more). i read all of it (except midnight sun) and i don't regret it.

Thank you! I started Twilight, and I share your opinion. I can't understand its popularity. So I watched the first movie. Nope. Still didn't grab me.

message 25: by LiteraryCryptid (new)

LiteraryCryptid | 60 comments Fun read as a young reader . . . But when I tried to re-read it a couple years ago, nope. I'll save it for nostalgia and rose tinted memories of the books/movies.

I feel like it depends on your reading history - if you've read adult vampire books (Anne Rice/ Lyndsay Sands) it doesn't hold up - - But if it's your first foray into this genre, it's a decent start.

message 26: by Tanja (new)

Tanja | 315 comments I read half of the first book and gave up. Was not my taste. Too much bla bla and the vampires make no sense to me.

message 27: by nour (new)

nour | 67 comments NO ABSOLUTLEY NOT. There is no frickin plot, the fmc is stupid and dumb and 'pick-me', the love intrests(s) are misogynistic/sexist, don't read this book!!

This book was shit and reading it was a huge waste of my time. (srry for my language i just want to keep people from reading it )

message 28: by Siddharth (new)

Siddharth Seetharaman | 10 comments Interesting question ... The only reason I don't regret reading them is because I can now read the reviews that roast it whenever I'm down and watch Robert Pattinson's interviews where he talks about how ridiculous it is! I know that's mean, but in spite of a promising start in the first book, the writing is mostly repetitive and meh. The action or plot mostly takes place (at breakneck speed) in the last quarter of the book, leaving the rest for describing how Bella hyperventilates each time she sees Edward (plus other feels with Jacob). Not to mention, the climax in the last book is one of the most ridiculous and laughably disappointing I've ever come across. Anyway, I know people for whom it has been fun to read and I always have great fun dissecting it later, so it's your call; but know that you wouldn't have done yourself a disservice if you skip this series either!

message 30: by Sheila (new)

Sheila | 44 comments If you like serious vampire books try the
Blackdagger Brotherhood series by
J R WARD,...

message 31: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 130 comments Okay, I did re-read it and found it to be an easy read, fun and romantic. If you are looking for something deep, this isn’t it, but I really enjoyed it all over again. I write full reviews and you can get my take on each book.

message 32: by Petra (new)

Petra Jayne Green (midknightrose) | 14 comments They are hilariously bad. while they can be boring to read at times, the stupid moments make it a fun time. I just finished re reading new moon and will be starting eclipse in the new year.

message 33: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Green-Kingery | 70 comments I read the first two because I was a teacher and all my students were raving about them and because I love supernatural stuff. Right off the bat, I was super-annoyed with how whiney Bella was and could not continue reading the series. Meh is right!

I love the Sookie Stackhouse vampire series and The Discovery of Witches series...

message 35: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 136 comments I read them at a time when I was going through my first major break-up, so for me they were an easy-to escape to, fluff, supernatural story. Also, the movies were about to be released and I wanted to read the books first. If I were to pick a series of books now, I wouldn't recommend them. Far better out there, like The Mayfair Witches Series and The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice or The Showhunters Series by Cassandra Clare.

message 36: by Carson (new)

Carson (carsonsbookishdiary) As someone currently reading the Twilight series, I think that if you can get past the slight wattpad feeling and you are ok with some parts being kind of boring. It is definitely a good series in my opinion, if you like the movies just know that they are very different from the books but both are still good

message 37: by han (new)

han (hanhantap) | 14 comments As a former — and sometimes current — Twihard, read them! They're easy to read, quick, and absurd. Just remember that they are ridiculous and dumb and you'll have a fun time!

message 38: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 2 comments I read them all but honestly only liked the first book.

message 39: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Silva | 12 comments I read it many years ago, when it was published, altought i like a few characters, i really disliked Bella and her constant whinning and teenager depresion, but i've heard some people read it not taking it seriously, and it turns out pretty fun :P
