Talking about too much swearing, explicit violence/gore, too much fluff, a specific trope.. Anything you find cringe worthy.

Yes, when a book (for example "A Simple Story" by Donna Tartt) still has not reached any momentum/speed by page 100. Then I give up. As Gabriel Maria Marquez once said: there are too many good books out there to waste time on boring books.
cultural appropriation. Example: a middle class white man writing novels that rely heavily on Native American cultures & customs and feature Native American main characters.

Used to like romance but now I am going to be grumpy old woman and say that romance books are now have too many sex scenes. Also NEVER kill animals especially a dog.

I agree. Not being like the others seems to be a virtue in literature these days. Just once in a while it would be nice not to read about a strong, independent heroine. I'm getting so sick and tired of them!
if it doesn't grab my attention in the first few chapters, it's a no for me.
If a story takes half the book to develop, then I will skip past many sections to get to something more significant or put it down altogether. Also, if there is WAY too much description of furniture in a house, office, etc, I will also skip through all that. I want enough to ADD to the story, not detract from the story development.
When a character is supposed to have come out of prison or had a life where they should have street smarts and common sense but they’re written like they’re stupid without an ounce of common sense. I hate when tough characters and dumbed down just so there’s conflict to push the story forward.
Too many middle class characters/conversations/problems. Especially when the novel becomes London centric.When working class characters are portrayed as either uneducated or chaotic. Especially when their speech is written ungrammatically-to underline the fact that the characters aren’t like the rest of the world.

A sure tell a book will be boring as all can be. Whether it's a head-shot, self-portraiture, or anything trying to mimic or emote real life... it's either going to be an advice-giving slog or rambly, flowery, monotonous, repetitive, disappointing read.

Especially if the picture is the back view of a child. Then, you know what you’re going to get.
Characters who second guess themselves and overthink everything constantly. It’s so boring and annoying to me. Also when they think everything is their fault. I can’t!

BDSM... Power dynamic between sub and dom. Or they have a degradation kink.😈 Sex is just another side of their personality not their whole personality that's why they are entitled to expect equality outside of sex.😸 for most women and men it's a relief from social expectations in their own private times with a trusted partner.😊 And it's important to remember that both parties must consent to the act.🤔This kind of sexual relationships are solely based on trust and communication.😌
Mostly those types of books are catered to a specific audience so it may not resonate with you. 😅Hope you find a kink that you like.😄

When they feature an edgy teen vigilante squad, such as in The Gilded Wolves. I just really hate it as a trope.

If it has an Oprah or Reese Witherspoon Book Club sticker on it-- NOPE! It's likely going to be lame, dry, boring, forced, sappy-touchy-feely without character development, direction, or plot, and not self-reflective or nuanced enough to even begin to be any sort of literary gem. I find most celebrity book club recommendations to be all hype and no substance.

I'm certainly not into book banning, and if that's what one wants to read, have at it, whatever it might be. (My worst, I think, was Naked Lunch.) But the question was personal, what turns YOU off? And that's mine. I am, admittedly, a prude, regarding sex. I prefer rom-coms that treat sexuality lightly, so I can picture it for myself.

No to mafia storylines or books that start right off with sex or needless violence. I also don’t enjoy when the male character is violent or insulting to the female.

Authors who are promoting their other books thorough a book, promoting their son’s CD’s (it was in Jack Canfield’s “The success principles” if I remember well), authors who are reminding you in every other chapter to subscribe to their blogs, attend their seminars, any sort of self promotion in general.
Oh… and tacky titles, of course, such as “12 Months to $1 Million” , “The Instant Millionaire” and similar BS.

Books that mention COVID 🙄, dark romance where the h is a virgin and then 5 pages later begging for anal and being tied down, and finally (now that I am in my 30s)… books with main characters that are in early 20s or younger
If the book is categorized as Romance, I generally know it's not for me. I may give it a shot if it's for a book club or a friend really loves it and recommends it.
I'm not really into the extreme dark romance books with scenes of inanimate objects, aliens, etc. Romance books written by men. Tropes: Surprise pregnancy, 3rd act break ups, mis-communication, and age-gap.
female main character (even written by women) who doesn't know how to make a choice, keep it, understand other characters, accepts defeat rll easily or doesn't accept at all, doesn't have personality...Love triangles
