Cavak | 1 comments At first I was going to say racism, but then I know that it can be used as a powerful literary device. Precisely to highlight why something is unjust and allowing someone to speak their truths. As long as the narration/the author demonstrates self-awareness of that.

So instead I'll say materialism and greed as redeeming traits. Depends on the character's background and setting though. Like if they're a character earning their way out of poverty and learning to give back to their community afterwards, then that's not greed. I'm for that.

But if they're already rich and they only brag about getting even richer, justifying how cutting human ties along the way is an appropriate course of action, or if a man gives his lady friend an expensive gift and his lady friend dismisses her self-respect because of his gift alone, nah.

Unless it's going to turn into a Greek tragedy later down the line (i.e. everything burns to the ground), you lost me.

Tasha (il0veb0oks) | 8 comments When they play a certain card over and over in the story. Makes it hard to get into. I've tried multiple books that do this and each time I can't make it very far.
Also if they are too slow. I can handle a slow book, but not to the point of boredom.

becs | 178 comments the same dialogue over and over/repetition, tasteless smut, and when the chara vows to never make the same mistake or change as a person only to continuously be a terrible person aka no character development

Dee Turner | 17 comments Graphic sex scenes completely spoil imagining how YOU'd want it to be--UGH. Especially when the guy calls a woman "baby," and/or dictates how she should be doing it, or demands she take off her clothes so he can examine her, I find nothing sexy about that. I abhor scenes in which the man nullifies a woman's agency, who then gets all excited by his clear misogyny! I take exception to spanking and all anal references. I like romance but not when it's explicitly detailed.

message 105: by Geloü (new)

Geloü unnecessary sex scenes and romance for me, especially of I wanted to have the story focused more on the plot, like if it's a horror, science fiction or thriller themed

erindreads | 10 comments graphic sex scenes and most romance because they’re all very similar in my opinion

message 108: by rea🖤 (new)

rea🖤 | 5 comments I'll quit reading an author/series if the side characters lack empathy with no resolve for the main character or vice versa. Especially if the topic is heavy or the main character is made to feel like they deserve to be treated the way they are. I won't finish reading the "Kane Brothers" series by Meghan Quinn because of the second book and I can't read anything by Madeleine Roux because of the "Asylum" series by her for instance.

I also don't like when romance novels are too fast paced and the characters "fall in love" throughout the book, when in reality the time frame of the book was 2-3 days. Also in the same line of romance novels, I won't DNF for it but, if a book is too Wattpad esque I'll second think reading anything else from the author.

sab | 46 comments no character development, i accept flaws but i cant handle consistent characters at all. i need them to grow.

message 116: by Susanne (new)

Susanne | 102 comments I agree, CDWB, animal abuse/trauma is a no-no for me too. I couldn't read The Island of Dr Moreau because of the description of the puma crying in the first few chapters. The Horse Whisperer was the most difficult book I've ever read. I only finished it to see if the horse was okay!
