Is there anything in particular that puts you instantly off from a book?
When there’s no action at the start and it’s boring. Some authors over describe the character location.
Slow start, I am not the biggest fan of the third person-it happens that I like the story written in the third person, but the storyline and characters have to be extremely amazing; I am not a fan of titled chapters
Laugh if you will, but sometimes the cover art makes a book look unappealing. I preordered Murtagh by Christopher Paolini because I loved all of his books in the Dragon rider series. I have had Murtagh sitting and waiting to be read, and I couldn’t figure out why I didn’t feel like reading it…. It was because they put a guy in a robe in front of the Dragon and the drawing is terrible. The Dragon is great, the guy ruins it and for some reason turned me off. I will eventually read it, but cover art matters!
Bad cover arts, way too much hyped books and over explanation and repetitiveness in the writing
Bad writing, no redeeming characters, cheating and older men taking advantage of teenage girls as normal , ick.
The appearance of an animal in a narrative usually does not bode well, especially a pet. Even the suspicion of animal cruelty will make me stop reading.
When it doesn't pull me in in the first few chapters and it definitely needs to have a good prologue! If not...then eh! Also, if you are reading and you already see the plot twist or have an idea of who the killer is...when it's too predictable.
When there are girls who’s whole character is “i’m not like other girls” and “I would rather wear pants than a dress” and “I hate pink” and “I just want to eat food.” For some reason that really bugs me. For example America in The Selection series. I did like that series and made it through but only because of Maxon. (Don’t kill me please)
Books with the R-word and stupid, naive and irritating characters.
alot but spicy scenes is my cherry on top. Can't read anything without one anymore. I would appreciate if you guys recommend me books that has a little to no spicy books that are good. ♥️

lots of graphic sex scenes, needless swearing, pregnancy trope, internalized misogyny & annoying characters :)
for some reason, real world references, be it people, memes, show names, etc. songs barely get a pass, it's fine if it's just the title or lyric. it just takes me out of a book otherwise. haven't read it in a book yet, but cheating, especially if they still end up together. and poorly written "strong female characters" that don't truly do anything for themselves and only act at the one critical/pivotal moment, otherwise they're just letting themselves get led.
Pure smut with no plot if I’m not even 3 chapters in and theirs 🌶️🌶️ it’s not for me.
main characters that lack emotional maturity
when they go on this wild rant of things happening only to follow it up with something like "except that never happened, it was all dream." I'll DNF if it happens often in a book

I hate HATE when the main charecters personality is blander than my cooking.I like my MC's to be strong powerful boss women, that when a man makes them mad they cut of their balls. Tropes I HATE:
Pregnancy tropes- like why do they have to get pregnant right NOW
FriendsKidnapping/ Rape (any like that. Im ok with like kidnapping if it has a big role in the story, but if there is just a random kidnapping- like nahh)
OTHER THINGS I HATE:
I hate when there is unnecessary vulgar words (c**t, p***y, etc.)
I absolutely hate when the author insists on implying how huge the man is, in the pants and outside of the pants every other chapter.
I hate when it's smut with no plot.(Court of the Vampire Queen)
One last thing I ABSOLUTELY HATE is when the writing is sooooooo bad that I probably could have writen the story better than the author in second grade.

Romance is a book killer for me, sorry but I hate romance books unless they got a really good story line.
Whenever a book has a weird sprinkling of misogyny, or random borderline racist shit, or fatphobia, or things like that.And it isn't there as a part of a messed up character, I'm taking about when it just feel like the author's personal bullshit creeping in.
A good example of this: started reading Leave the World Behind last year and did not finish (rare for me) because his random incest and pedo comments about the underage characters were so unnecessary, creepy, and out of place! (also the writing was terrible.)
When the FMC is described as a petite fragile little thing or when the enemies become lovers instantly
If I read the back of the book and the main character has a weird ass name, I won't read it because I can't handle reading a whole story about Luna Neverlight or whatever.
when the love interests are just assholes. the authors are really out here trying to convince me that he’s mean but he’s hot and occasionally treats MC like a decent person, so therefore I should love him. No. Disgusting. Get out of my face. It’s worse when he does nothing but belittle her and doubt her.
When the print is too fine for me to read without a magnifying glass.
I don’t enjoy unrealistic romance novels or most science fiction.

omg when there's so much smut or overbearing graphic sexual scenes!! it gets on my nerves so much and it seems very common in books published in the last few years. a lot of people will say these books are 'so good' etc etc but its all just smut, no plot, the characters have no personality!! its infuriating, and even worse when its terribly written out and planned like some characters whole family was just murdered and the author writes that they have seggs??? WHAT HELLO??? actually no its being thrown in the trash i beg of you. anyways and also just no character development and terrible writing in general, a book NEEDS to be well rounded, clever, and witty in my opinion.
Numerous errors (spelling, wrong character names, plot errors) too repetitive or unnecessary vulgarity.
cheating will turn me off of a book quickly. I can read some disturbing shit, but cheating does it for me.
I really can't stand finding out that a new YA Fantasy novel (I'm old but a teacher so I try to read what they read) has multiple POVs in alternating chapters. It's been done to death & most authors don't do it well. Now some authors really do understand the technique & use it to the fullest for suspense & dramatic irony, but most these days just don't seem to understand the convention. So I tend to immediately prejudge books with that device. I'm wrong sometimes--and they're fine anyway. But it puts me off.
I'm also extremely put off by authors who do not use correct grammar with comparisons. The boy is taller than I (am tall). The subject pronoun is needed. But most authors use the object pronoun and it drives me crazy. I certainly don't mind the plural they/them with pronoun agreement because that is certainly correct & respectful now. So obviously grammar is fluid. And it should be.
But objects & subjects are still objects & subjects and there is no cultural reason why that should change for predicate nominative like, "This is she/he/they (correct) vs. This is me/him/them (incorrect)" or for comparisons which require subjects.
I have come to accept that many great writers just don't use subject/object pronouns well. But I am always impressed by those who do like Mark Lawrence, Patrick Rothfuss & Charlie Jane Anders.
sex scenes and the description of d*cks and vag*nasand slow books
I feel disenchanted when language and modern sensibilities overwhelm a time setting. also, I'm put off when a child sounds like an adult or an adolescent sounds like a toddler.

I don't mind a bit of it in the story line as long as it isn't over the top. There are authors who write 'clean' romances (no graphic descriptions/crudeness/foul language) and they describe their books as such. If Romance is your go to genre, you may want to look out for them.
I have been a reader from early childhood and what really turns me off a book are grammatical errors. Incorrect spelling, misuse of past/present tense, mixing up character names and datelines that don't make sense or contradict previous events. I am one of these people that can't ignore these errors. It really takes away the enjoyment I get from reading when I am forever making corrections.
Ohhh, i have many. So first off if the book has repetitive writing style. If characters are bland. Too many cuss words. Friends to lovers or friends with benefits trope, pregnancy, bully romance, second chance, college romance. If book mentions any social media like Tiktok, Instagram or Youtube or any Starbucks, H&M like noo eww!???
Mention of pubic hair on the first page!
I HATE Romances, why mystery authors feel this adds, rather than distract and annoy readers. Many posters here seem to hate romance too! And, for pity's sake, I similarly despise sex scenes, we all know what sex "is". Mystery novels should be just that, and just because men and women WORK together, they do NOT need to sleep together!
Insta love. Like WHYYYY. Now I love the fall on love at first sight BUT when things escalate too quickly and within a short period of time they already kissed, got down, or whatever, its like no that totally ruins the whole journey of the relationship. Some examples of this were November 9 and If The Star Was A SunAnd bully romances. Like thay just turns me off like something from The Cruel Prince. Ik some consider it enemies to lovers but it also is definitely considered the other too
- When in 1st person povs the narrator start speaking to the reader "you may be wondering how i got into this situation" who are you talking to babe? this isn't a disney channel movie😭- """Period pieces""" and then the mc is wearing a tank top and someone just said "ok bro"
- Writing good banter is hard but that never excuses making the characters speak like witty twitters posts
- Dark romances in general (if being kidnapped by a stalker werewolf mafia heir and tied up to the ceilings like a salami is a fantasy that gets you going good for you, but it's not my cup of tea so I'll show myself out🚶)
- Female mc being like "I'm so plain 🥺 my skin is too flawless, my hair are always messy. So uglyyy. 🙈 My eyes are big and a rare color and too doll like 🥺 I'm too petite 🐣 no one could EVER find me pretty 😭" Get. a. F******. GRIP. omg
- Child characters because very few authors know how to portrait them well, and more often than not they don't sound realistic and are generally used as plot devices or walking tropes.

When there's dialogue then in the middle of it there's a whole page or more with descriptions of something or explaining what is this/why then back to dialogue. I completely forget what was being said and have to go back to check. Also when there's no indication of who's speaking.
- internalised misogyny, for some reason it's so popular in modern romances, and what pisses me off is when it appears in popular books it just doesn't get called out because people are scared to insult the book/author. The biggest example of this is probably the Binding 13 series and Colleen Hoover (though I do see Colleen's called out sometimes). Binding 13 is really annoying though because all I ever see for it is praise when it does a lot of the similar misogynistic tropes as other books that people claim they hate then give this book a pass (the main female is not like the other girls! the main guys ex is called a slut and diseased numerous times but somehow he is allowed to sleep with tons of women and not get called out? etc)
- cheating in romance especially if they get back together sorry nah that is unforgivable no amount of groveling will help
- pet names in romances idk why it always puts me off, it doesn't sound sexy or cute (the most i can deal with is 'baby')
