Kristopher Aldridge | 6 comments Unsure of the year but it was late 90s. Initially it was a writing prompt in high school that had snippets of the book and we were required to come up with our own characters. I eventually found the book through my library exchange.

Like the header says. School of magic and sorcery. Students have accomplishments on their personal Banners/Scrolls (kinda like the Wizard of Yurt series). However, the students do not know when or if they will "graduate" as the teachers basically kick them out when they are unteachable.

Main character is "parentless" as his mother died in childbirth which is unheard of in this world.

The word Dunn is bouncing around in my brainbox but may be completely unrelated.

It is mandatory to include genre and plot details in your topic header, as per the Group Rules.

Because this group is so huge, we will close threads that don't adhere to this requirement.

Please add more plot details to your topic header from what you've already written.

Kristopher, I copied book details to the topic header. Feel free to edit it.

Does the boy come from a real-world home (where?) and travel to the magic school?
Is this a series?

David Añez | 418 comments A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin, Aindriu's suggestion.

While the protagonist's True Name is Ged, as a child was known as Duny, which could be related to Dunn.

However, his mother didn't die at childbirth, instead dying before he was one year old.

Maybe worth checking out.
