Kristopher, I copied book details to the topic header. Feel free to edit it.
Does the boy come from a real-world home (where?) and travel to the magic school?
Is this a series?

While the protagonist's True Name is Ged, as a child was known as Duny, which could be related to Dunn.
However, his mother didn't die at childbirth, instead dying before he was one year old.
Maybe worth checking out.

Like the header says. School of magic and sorcery. Students have accomplishments on their personal Banners/Scrolls (kinda like the Wizard of Yurt series). However, the students do not know when or if they will "graduate" as the teachers basically kick them out when they are unteachable.
Main character is "parentless" as his mother died in childbirth which is unheard of in this world.
The word Dunn is bouncing around in my brainbox but may be completely unrelated.
