2024 Challenge - General

Excited chatter while we wait for the 2024 list to post!!!
The day is almost over which means hopefully by this time tomorrow (or sooner) we'll have the 2024 prompts!
Book lover wrote: "Laura wrote: "I am excited for the new challenge to drop. Been doing them for a number of years now. But this year's challenge was such a let down, I haven't completed it and at this point I am onl..."Would it be wrong of me to ask what the prompt was that didn't sit well with you?
Christina wrote: "Would it be wrong of me to ask what the prompt was that didn't sit well with you?"I don't know about Book lover, but I REALLY detested "romance with a fat lead", and I had issues with the ones which wanted personal data, like "published in the year you were born".
Trish wrote: "I had issues with the ones which wanted personal data, like "published in the year you were born."I was thinking that you could censor the book... just mark it read. You don't need to tell anyone which book it was.
I personally like that prompt. A book born the same year I was. My literary twin :-D
Doni wrote: "Did anyone else stay up until midnight PST just in case they dropped the challenge?!"They have always posted the list during their office hours and they usually forget to add it to the UK site until someone points it out that we can't access the US site anyway.
Ellie wrote: They have always posted the list during their office hours and they usually forget to add it to the UK site until someone points it out that we can't access the US site anywayThanks for the heads up on that. I kind of figured they would do as much.
It's finally Dec. 1st though, so will certainly be checking throughout the day.
My personal issue was “ book you were supposed to read in school” I read all mine so it was impossible for me to do.
What a long wait. I'm distracting myself with my usual online stuff and making stickers so that helps the time go at least.

Lol, I just wanted to peak before I started my morning and... I had things to do this morning?? Nah......
Argh, I haven't had lunch yet, I should go eat before I get sucked into WTF am I meant to read for that type thinking!
Better than last year but not much overlap with the books I’m reading for another challenge so I would need to read nearly 100 books.
A book about kpop? This is going to be difficult for me. Are there any that aren't adolescent or young adult? Good grief! I wish that Popsugar would allow you to substitute one alternative of your choice.
Ooooh already jotting ideas! I've got NO clue on Kpop books so I'm excited to see what shows up on that listopia :)
Wow... this is the worst set of prompts I've seen. I think I'm going to try a different challenge this year.
They're really riding that 24 theme, huh? Well, it's better than this year's prompts imo. But some of them I'm not too enthused about (so over dragons, lol). Also, 45 regular prompts and 5 advanced? Interesting choice.
Whoa. Read the list and thought I'm going to need a lot of help! There are many that are just so specific. But I don't mind, I definitely feel more excited about this one than last years (except for a couple of the repeats - takes place in 24 hours and NaNoWriMo...grrr).
Not a fan of all the prompts (wish they hadn't repeated the NaNo and single-day/24-hours prompts in back to back years, since I'm not a huge fan of those) but... a book with pirates AND a book with dragons??? Two of my favorite things to read about at the moment??? I'm happy for that reason alone, lol.
I think the prompts are so much better than this year's! Not necessarily easier but definitely more unique which also makes it more fun imo!also can't believe I read XOXO for another (music inspired) challenge just last month which would now work for k-pop and title starting with X!
Wow, there's some odd ones in there, although at least most of them are new. I could have done without the 24h and NaNo ones, too, and the female athelete as that was a struggle last time. Plus I'm definitely going to need help with K-Pop, having never listened to it.
I'm also not sure how you figure out the age of characters until you read the book, and there are two of those.

Oh SF is a great route to go with that. I looked at that prompt and was like: but I already read My Year of Rest and Relaxation! 😂
I also find the NaNo repeat prompt annoying. I read the only book off that list I was interested in this year. I think I’ll probably just swap that one out if I decide to do the challenge (I’m undecided, but I do think this years prompts are much better than last years.)
Anyone else disappointed? So many 24s and many prompts seem very specific and potentially challenging to find more than a couple options that will fit.
I’m about done with this challenge. I figure I might get 30 or so done.Every year less and less that’s fun or I’m interested in.
I think I'm done too, A book with a 24 year old character, a book with a 42 year old character, a book set precisely 24 years before you were born. A genre you generally avoid - hello, there is a reason why I might avoid it.Nothing there that really grabs me and a lot that doesn't. I'll stick with ATY and its associated challenges.
I'm sad about this because I have enjoyed PopSugar in the past, but this is not an improvement on last year for me.

I might just reread XOXO for the "starts with X" and there's a sequel coming out next year (ASAP) for the K-pop prompt.
I don't think this year is for me either. I want to read books that I like to fill a prompt and bit have to dig to find just something.
I'm more excited about the 24 one than I was for this past year in 23. I am bummed that there was no place to write in the books on the template so I just created my own on excel.
There's a lot of books that I own, plus ones I'm excited to look into getting.
One of my favorite prompts from the list is about a neurodivergent character.
I really like the 24 years before you were born. I googled "what happened in 1957?" and confirmed that Little Rock was integrated that year. I have lots of choices for that. The 24 year old and the 42 year old prompts will be tough, but I'm curious what we all come up with.
I'm most bummed about Nano prompt, but since I *still* haven't read The Night Circus, I have an easy option.
i actually really like this years prompts! I cant fit any of my big plans in this one, I fear, but I'm gonna be open in trying to clear them all!
Jesse wrote: "Wow... this is the worst set of prompts I've seen. I think I'm going to try a different challenge this year."My thoughts exactly. After looking forward to the new list all week I feel extremely disappointed and let down. I’m thinking I will skip PS and concentrate on Around the Year.
I am liking this year's prompts! While I didn't mind last year's, they weren't much of a challenge for me. This year it's a CHALLENGE, which makes it more fun for me to plan. And the planning is probably my favorite part, anyway. Ha!
I planned my whole day around being free at 12pm for the list drop, came online, and found out they'd posted it hours ago! Some of these prompts will definitely be a challenge, but it's refreshing to see so many new prompts. After 9 years, some prompts will inevitably be repeated. (I just wish it wasn't the prompts I struggle with the most!) But I love a lot of the prompts - pirates, dragons, space, the future, magic realism, cozy fantasy - so no complaints from me!
I took a year off because I was so disappointed with last year's prompts, but I'm SO EXCITED for this list! I love how inclusive the prompts are and that some are actually challenging.
Did you look through the recommendations they gave for prompts? I was happy to see many books that are getting banned and some books I had never heard of not just what was a bestseller last year.
These are definitely a stretch, which I'm excited about. Book that starts with Letter 'X'? How many books are there that fit that?! I only know two off the bat that will fit the prompts: To Shape a Dragon's Breath for dragon prompt and He, She, Them for by trans or nonbinary author. The only one I think I'll have to modify is horror by BIPOC. I just really hate to read things that are too scary. So I think I'll replace that prompt with 'favorite genre by BIPOC author which is in Robot Librarian's challenge!
First year I am not liking the prompts, I may just do one from another year that I didn't get to do.
I don't read much horror, either. I'm thinking I will allow social horror (which, *as I define it* is wide enough to include 'a society that does things that are horrific/horrible to a marginalized group'.) Apartheid, lynching, slavery, genocide, all those atrocities then come into play.
I just read through the list and I'm going to be using a lot of creativity for some of these prompts lol. Mostly I'm happy with the list but why oh why did they repeat the NaNoWriMo prompt?? It was hard enough the first time!
Jennifer W wrote: "I don't read much horror, either. I'm thinking I will allow social horror (which, *as I define it* is wide enough to include 'a society that does things that are horrific/horrible to a marginalized..."To be fair, a lot of those subjects are exactly what are being covered in horror books by BIPOC authors.
