2024 Challenge - General

Excited chatter while we wait for the 2024 list to post!!!

I have a list of past prompts I would not mind doing again that is 63 prompts long, so any horrible prompts can be replaced.

ATY was my main challenge this year and I only did 40 of the Popsugar prompts. I'm happy to just do a partial challenge again if they haven't upped their game. I don't mind a couple of only-reading-for-a-prompt books but not double digits.

I have probably jinxed the old local book prompt into existence by reading a whole TWO BOOKS set in the New Forest this year, and usually the best I can find is the next county over or something when I actually need one for a prompt.

Uhhh, it never even occurred to me to go back and see when and how they released the sneak peeks last year!
I have a killer two and a half weeks ahead of me, which is good, because that way I won't think about the new prompts all the time, but I can already see myself on December 1 hoping that the prompts will be released before my (very attention-demanding and quite important) evening activity starts at 7.00 pm my time (I'm on CET) ... we'll see ...^^

Ooooh if they do I'll put in a vote for Discount Armageddon, I had a lot of fun with that a few weeks ago!
For some reason I'm always disappointed in the sneak peek. I think I get too excited and then when I see it I can't help but deflate.

I felt deflated seeing the whole list last year, so at least it was indicative of what was to come. 🤭 It was more fun when Tara did it, I remember we had a whole week of them at some point? And one was something I'd suggested! I'm guessing the book club is kind of low priority at Popsugar these days.

For me, it's Star Wars: The Living Force by John Jackson Miller. The whole Jedi Council seen in The Phantom Menace goes on a cosmic adventure. Miller is the author of Kenobi and Star Trek's Prey trilogy, which are absolutely outstanding, so I always at least pay attention to what he is releasing.

yes right now I'm excited about four 2024 books - my list will grow as we get closer!
Funny Story (Henry)
Lost Ark Dreaming by Suyi Davies Okungbowa
Mirrored Heavens (Roanhorse)

So far in 2024, I'm looking forward to:
A Sorceress Comes to Call
Mirrored Heavens
The Brides at High Hill
Heavenly Tyrant
Saint-Seducing Gold
Funny Story
The Familiar

I agree, John! I already have The Women by Kristin Hannah on preorder at my local book store!

2024 is also the year of the dragon so I bet we have something to do with that.
I don't care what's on the list. I will do it no matter what. :) The challenge has really broadened my reading and I love it. No complaints from me.

There are several books that I'm really excited to read next year, including...
~Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands
~Mislaid in Parts Half-Known
~A Grave Robbery
~A Sorceress Comes to Call

So, if I like the prompts, and if I can fit them around HoL, I will. If not, oh well, Life is just too short, and I'm coping with too much to sacrifice a brilliant read, for ho-hum meh reads.

NVM. Just overly excited for it to be released. LOL!

Honestly, I mostly just read whatever I want and check afterwards which prompts my finished books might work for, and I add (often several) books from my TBR shelf to prompts so I know what I could read if I feel like it :)

Wasn’t a fan of many of the prompts this year, but still managed to tackle a lot and hope to cross off at least 2 more before the year ends. I hope to be able to fit many fantasy reads into the prompts of 2024, since I am into catching up with older series.

Yeah, I've been doing the same thing too even though we've been told the list won't arrive till the 1st. Still, maybe it's an impulse that I'm always checking.
I struggled with the list this year. There were so many prompts that fit fiction genres so that in and of itself was a challenge for me since 80% of what I read this year was nonfiction.
I've made it a goal though to accept the fiction challenge and read more fiction next year. Maybe that will make the prompts easier should they be geared towards fiction again.

what does "ergodic" mean when used to describe a book?

I know I said I'm losing hope, but also: Popsugar has traditionally buried us with silence prior to releasing their list. I don't know why they do that, but they like to just be fully radio silent and then catch us all by surprise. Even back when Tara was running things and creating great lists, there was a lot of silence in the run-up to the release.
I expected the "sneak peek" to be this past weekend, so we'd have a week of speculation in the lead-up, but now it looks like they'll release it just the day before. Or maybe today! maybe in ten minutes! (they seem to start their day at 9am PST)

It's possible!!! And, after scrolling through recent Popsugar Entertainment articles, I suspect there will be a category involving transgender authors, and a category involving Latine authors.

Re: 2024 books, I never pay attention to what is coming out, so I always hope I stumble onto something good. I'm sure I will! :)

I will say, this year got me to relax a little on how strict I used to be regarding prompts, lol.

I always start as soon as the PopSugar Challenge is released. I've also been getting-book fasting for the last couple of months, so new prompts will be a reason to get new books!

I'll be starting in January. I have too many books on my TBR for December so I simply do not have the time or the luxury to start early.

This is how I go about it too. I love the books I own, but depending on the prompt if I don't have any that work then I certainly search for some that will.

I'll only count books I finish in 2024 but I usually try and start the year with a chunkster that I can have almost read by the 1st January. The Goodreads challenge widget only works for the Jan-Dec timeframe so having that be out would annoy me no end, but I do think some people start as soon as the list comes out.

Not always, but often. And they DID promise us one!! But nothing yet.
It's only 6:15 am there so they are just waking up, there's still a possibility that they'll post a "sneak peek" today.
And if not, well ... tomorrow we get the full peek.

They've also hinted at sneak peeks, but no word yet on when we get those. If we do get a peek, I'll open up the first category post for it.
Because GR limits the number of new posts any one person can create to three an hour, Lynn and I are getting ahead of things and creating placeholders that we can quickly convert on List Day!
I'm hoping for a lot of NEW categories, and no categories that ask me to borrow or buy or get a recommendation from someone, and no categories linked in any way to my name or hometown or profession, because we have BTDT with ALL of it and I am OVER IT.
