Popsugar has promised us a new list on Dec 1st!! (Probably will release at 9 am PST, but they have not specified.)

They've also hinted at sneak peeks, but no word yet on when we get those. If we do get a peek, I'll open up the first category post for it.

Because GR limits the number of new posts any one person can create to three an hour, Lynn and I are getting ahead of things and creating placeholders that we can quickly convert on List Day!

I'm hoping for a lot of NEW categories, and no categories that ask me to borrow or buy or get a recommendation from someone, and no categories linked in any way to my name or hometown or profession, because we have BTDT with ALL of it and I am OVER IT.

Ashley Marie | 1028 comments I'm looking forward to seeing what's on the list, but if I don't think I can fill a majority of them I probably won't do it next year. I really fell in love with the ATY prompts this year and I can feel myself shifting gears toward that. But we'll see! :)

message 3: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Harbeke | 696 comments Whether they are old or new prompts, my hope with the challenge is that the conversations and listopias bring to light some new titles that we end up loving.

I have a list of past prompts I would not mind doing again that is 63 prompts long, so any horrible prompts can be replaced.

message 4: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1756 comments I checked back on what they did last year and I think the sneak peek will be on Monday. There better be dragons! The combination of Year of the Dragon and all the buzz around Fourth Wing makes it seem a no brainer.

ATY was my main challenge this year and I only did 40 of the Popsugar prompts. I'm happy to just do a partial challenge again if they haven't upped their game. I don't mind a couple of only-reading-for-a-prompt books but not double digits.

I have probably jinxed the old local book prompt into existence by reading a whole TWO BOOKS set in the New Forest this year, and usually the best I can find is the next county over or something when I actually need one for a prompt.

Uhhh, it never even occurred to me to go back and see when and how they released the sneak peeks last year!

I have a killer two and a half weeks ahead of me, which is good, because that way I won't think about the new prompts all the time, but I can already see myself on December 1 hoping that the prompts will be released before my (very attention-demanding and quite important) evening activity starts at 7.00 pm my time (I'm on CET) ... we'll see ...^^

message 7: by Trish (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 265 comments I do hope it's a more exciting and original list than last year. I'm down to four prompts, but it's been tricky to get enthused this year, and I'm still fighting the longest book on my TBR!

For some reason I'm always disappointed in the sneak peek. I think I get too excited and then when I see it I can't help but deflate.

I felt deflated seeing the whole list last year, so at least it was indicative of what was to come. 🤭 It was more fun when Tara did it, I remember we had a whole week of them at some point? And one was something I'd suggested! I'm guessing the book club is kind of low priority at Popsugar these days.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 847 comments I'm looking forward to seeing next year's prompts, but I'm not planning to take on the challenge unless the majority of the prompts can be fulfilled by books I already own. I made a tremendous amount of progress on my TBR list this year, and really want to keep that momentum going.

message 13: by Erica (new)

Erica | 1256 comments I’m simultaneously excited/impatient for the new prompts on the first and the aty read-a-thon on the second while not wanting it to be closer to Christmas because I haven’t even started gift shopping.

message 14: by Erica (new)

Erica | 1256 comments I don’t understand the point of a sneak peak when it comes to this challenge. A sneak peak isn’t going to increase interest just post the whole list if it’s ready.

message 15: by Brandon (last edited Nov 21, 2023 12:21PM) (new)

Brandon Harbeke | 696 comments Based on history, one of the prompts will be for a book published in 2024. Does anyone already have a book they are anticipating for next year?

For me, it's Star Wars: The Living Force by John Jackson Miller. The whole Jedi Council seen in The Phantom Menace goes on a cosmic adventure. Miller is the author of Kenobi and Star Trek's Prey trilogy, which are absolutely outstanding, so I always at least pay attention to what he is releasing.

yes right now I'm excited about four 2024 books - my list will grow as we get closer!

Funny Story (Henry)
Lost Ark Dreaming by Suyi Davies Okungbowa
Mirrored Heavens (Roanhorse)

and I'm MOST excited about this sequel:
Right Hand (Walschots)

For me, it is The Women by Kristin Hannah.

message 18: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1756 comments I was sorting out my new releases tracker yesterday for next year and I have 128 books on it already! Obviously I won't be reading all of them, but most excited about Mislaid in Parts Half-Known by Seanan McGuire, Mirrored Heavens by Rebecca Roanhorse, Red Side Story by Jasper Fforde, Private Rites by Julia Armfield, What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher, The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo, The Last Murder at the End of the World by Stuart Turton, The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P. Djèlí Clark and Your Blood, My Bones by Kelly Andrew.

message 19: by Jen W. (new)

Jen W. (piratenami) | 517 comments My previously most anticipated book for 2024 already got pushed back to 2025 (Holy Terrors).

So far in 2024, I'm looking forward to:

A Sorceress Comes to Call
Mirrored Heavens
The Brides at High Hill
Heavenly Tyrant
Saint-Seducing Gold
Funny Story
The Familiar

I just finished Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries, so I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands, which is supposed to come out in January.

I agree, John! I already have The Women by Kristin Hannah on preorder at my local book store!

message 24: by AF (new)

AF (slothlikeaf) | 398 comments We always have a "favorite prompt from a previous year" prompt, which I think of as a freebie. I can read whatever I want and find a prompt to fit it.

2024 is also the year of the dragon so I bet we have something to do with that.

I don't care what's on the list. I will do it no matter what. :) The challenge has really broadened my reading and I love it. No complaints from me.

There are several books that I'm really excited to read next year, including...

~Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands
~Mislaid in Parts Half-Known
~A Grave Robbery
~A Sorceress Comes to Call

message 26: by Linda (new)

Linda Donohue | 11 comments I also fulfill prompts with books I already have-and I have a lot. For books published in 2024 usually winning several giveaways fulfill that prompt—or a couple of trips to my local bookstore. Looking forward to the 2024 list no matter what is on it!

message 27: by Lilith (new)

Lilith (lilithp) | 1073 comments I finished the challenge this year, but I miss reading what I want to read. The one thing I have started and am beyond ecstatic about is a buddy read of House of Leaves. We have already started it. It's ergodic, and we are most definitely taking our time! I'm beyond thrilled with the rabbit holes, the translating, the hidden messages. This may take a while. I have *really* missed reading a 5 star book.

So, if I like the prompts, and if I can fit them around HoL, I will. If not, oh well, Life is just too short, and I'm coping with too much to sacrifice a brilliant read, for ho-hum meh reads.

Honestly, I mostly just read whatever I want and check afterwards which prompts my finished books might work for, and I add (often several) books from my TBR shelf to prompts so I know what I could read if I feel like it :)

message 31: by Mel (new)

Mel (Daily Prophecy) (thedailyprophecy) | 5 comments I am so excited! Good to find out the list will be published Dec 1st, because I’ve stalked Google with “Popsugar 2024” the past week without success (obviously)

Wasn’t a fan of many of the prompts this year, but still managed to tackle a lot and hope to cross off at least 2 more before the year ends. I hope to be able to fit many fantasy reads into the prompts of 2024, since I am into catching up with older series.

Yeah, I've been doing the same thing too even though we've been told the list won't arrive till the 1st. Still, maybe it's an impulse that I'm always checking.

I struggled with the list this year. There were so many prompts that fit fiction genres so that in and of itself was a challenge for me since 80% of what I read this year was nonfiction.

I've made it a goal though to accept the fiction challenge and read more fiction next year. Maybe that will make the prompts easier should they be geared towards fiction again.

what does "ergodic" mean when used to describe a book?

I know I said I'm losing hope, but also: Popsugar has traditionally buried us with silence prior to releasing their list. I don't know why they do that, but they like to just be fully radio silent and then catch us all by surprise. Even back when Tara was running things and creating great lists, there was a lot of silence in the run-up to the release.

I expected the "sneak peek" to be this past weekend, so we'd have a week of speculation in the lead-up, but now it looks like they'll release it just the day before. Or maybe today! maybe in ten minutes! (they seem to start their day at 9am PST)

It's possible!!! And, after scrolling through recent Popsugar Entertainment articles, I suspect there will be a category involving transgender authors, and a category involving Latine authors.

Jess Loves To Read (unlawful_sea) | 7 comments Will anyone begin the challenge in December or is everyone beginning it in January? This is my second year trying to complete it.

message 42: by cvtherin (new)

cvtherin | 61 comments I'm tentatively excited for next year's list. This year's was rather meh for me, so mainly I'd just like them to limit the number of repeat prompts.

I will say, this year got me to relax a little on how strict I used to be regarding prompts, lol.

message 43: by Erica (new)

I always start as soon as the PopSugar Challenge is released. I've also been getting-book fasting for the last couple of months, so new prompts will be a reason to get new books!

message 45: by Ron (new)

Ron | 2708 comments Jess wrote: "Will anyone begin the challenge in December or is everyone beginning it in January? This is my second year trying to complete it."

I'll be starting in January. I have too many books on my TBR for December so I simply do not have the time or the luxury to start early.

message 46: by Ron (new)

Ron | 2708 comments Doni wrote: new prompts will be a reason to get new books!

This is how I go about it too. I love the books I own, but depending on the prompt if I don't have any that work then I certainly search for some that will.

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1756 comments Jess wrote: "Will anyone begin the challenge in December or is everyone beginning it in January? This is my second year trying to complete it."

I'll only count books I finish in 2024 but I usually try and start the year with a chunkster that I can have almost read by the 1st January. The Goodreads challenge widget only works for the Jan-Dec timeframe so having that be out would annoy me no end, but I do think some people start as soon as the list comes out.

Not always, but often. And they DID promise us one!! But nothing yet.

It's only 6:15 am there so they are just waking up, there's still a possibility that they'll post a "sneak peek" today.

And if not, well ... tomorrow we get the full peek.
