An interesting premise, I thought, of a book that is about the Titanic disaster and yet, from an angle of a ship that did not come to the rescue. I can't say I know very much about the Titanic disaster except that Leonardo DiCaprio didn't have to die (jk!!). All I know what that it was a very costly disaster in terms of life.
There a number of POVs in The Midnight Watch with the most prominent being a journalist for the Boston American who was terribly curious as to the reason behind the SS California being closest to the Titanic and with Officers on board who witnessed distress rockets launched by the Titanic but did absolutely nothing about it. And even to deny having seen nor understood what these rockets represent. I admit to also being very curious as to what were in these men's heads back then. Of course, all these are just author's suppositions as while certain characters are real as SS California and these events were real, the protagonist journalist, John Steadman, was purely fictional.
This book has been sitting on my shelf for years from when it was first gifted to me. I assumed that it wasn't going to be an easy read and it wasn't. I almost DNF halfway through coz... mood! But I really wanted to know the reason why the SS California didn't come to the rescue so I tried audiobook first and managed to finish the book. Am I happy with the reason? No... but I guess it's plausible?
