anna karenina was the first russian lit book i read and it’s still one of my favourites. it’s engaging, has short chapters and some interesting themes without requiring a thorough understanding of imperial russia. i recommend richard pevear and larissa volokhonsky’s translation (penguin), which is also comprehensively annotated! :)
