mari | 2 comments anna karenina was the first russian lit book i read and it’s still one of my favourites. it’s engaging, has short chapters and some interesting themes without requiring a thorough understanding of imperial russia. i recommend richard pevear and larissa volokhonsky’s translation (penguin), which is also comprehensively annotated! :)

Amber Youlissa Notes from underground by Fjodor Dostojevski. Haven’t read it myself yet but it’s on my list.
