Anita Pomerantz | 9281 comments Our admin team has come together to brainstorm ideas that we hope to put up for a vote starting on November 15th.

I thought it might help us refine the ideas a bit more if we opened up the floor for some Q&A in advance of the vote.

Some of these ideas were from last year and submitted by fellow members. Others are new and developed by administrators.

I will make a post for each idea, and then we welcome questions! We may not know the answers as of yet, but your questions will help us to make the final descriptions as well as inform the very specific rules.

Anita Pomerantz | 9281 comments Reading Jeopardy

Administrators will create a virtual Jeopardy style board with categories. We will randomly select a member to choose a category for the month from a choice of six categories initially (and fewer in subsequent months). The dollar amounts under that category represent reading tasks ranging from very easy ($200) to very challenging ($1000). Then, each player (members can join at any time) will select a dollar amount they want to play for BEFORE the categories are revealed. $200 will be a very easy and broad read that anyone can do. $1000 will be tough and may involve multiple books (max three books). Once everyone has locked in their choices, it is up to the player to read and review a book(s) that fits the selection. If the player completes it, they get the dollar amount added to their score. Players may then move on to complete a different dollar amount in the same category, regardless of whether the task has been revealed or not. Forget or don’t submit the review on time, then the dollar amount is deducted. No re-reads will be allowed for this game. $50 bonuses will be awarded if your reading selection matches the tag.

So for example, let’s say the category is Award-Winning Fiction, the dollar amounts might be something like:
$200 - Read any fiction book that won any award ever
$400 - Read any fiction book that won any award in the past five years
$600 - Read any fiction book that won the Pulitzer or the National Book Award or the Booker Prize
$800 - Read award-winning fiction that was translated and won an award for the translation
$1000 - Read an award-winning fiction book written in the second person AND a book that won an award and was written by a woman outside of the United States.

One dollar amount (two for double Jeopardy) on the board will have a “Daily Double”, and if a player selects that dollar amount and completes the reading task, they will receive double the money. The daily double will not be revealed until after everyone has selected their dollar amount..

The first 6 months will be regular Jeopardy. The second 6 months will have a new board and be double Jeopardy with dollar amounts ranging from $400 to $2000.

The winner is the member who clearly accrues the most dollars. If there is no clear winner, those who have tied for the win will compete in final Jeopardy where they may bet their money as to whether or not they can complete a final reading task by a specified deadline. Please note this task will take place in January, 2025.

Anita Pomerantz | 9281 comments Books With Friends

Teams comprise 5 players each, give or take 1 person. Teams may be formed by five people agreeing to play together, or PBT administrators will help solo players form a team, each as close to 5 people as we can.

Each month the tag is announced. Each team must "spell" the tag (or the first word of the tag if the tag name is composed of two words) using either the first letter of the title (Excluding leading articles: A, An, The), or the first initial of the author's last name. The team decides among themselves who will read for which letters. You cannot begin reading until the official start of the period. Reviews must be posted before the next tag is announced. Bonus points awarded for reading a book that also fits the tag.
Example "DRAGONS"

D- Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury (read by player 1)
R – The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule (read by player 2)
A - Assembly by Natasha Brown (read by player 3)
G – Hunger by Roxanne Gay (read by player 3)
O – August is a Wicked Month by Edna O’Brien (read by player 4)
N – His Majesty’s Dragon by Novik (bonus pts for fitting the tag) (read by player 5)
S – Still Alice by Lisa Genova (read by player 2)

If any team member fails to participate, without notice or routinely, they may be dropped from the team and replaced with a reserve recruit at the discretion of remaining members of the team. The plan should be shared in advance with an administrator.

Game points (not participation points) are allocated each month to the team that finishes the task, the team that finishes first, and the team that reads the most books that fit the tag.

Individual points will be allocated to the person who is voted by their own team members as the most helpful to achieving the team objectives (voting will be anonymous) and individuals who read books that fit the monthly tags.

At year end, game points will be tallied and champions (team and individual) declared.

Anita Pomerantz | 9281 comments Trade That Tag

This activity is very similar to the white elephant style book swaps we have hosted on PBT in the past.

Each player will submit a single tag anonymously. Behind the scenes, an administrator will assign each submission a number. The order of play will be generated at random. The first player will select a number, and the administrator will report what tag has been opened by that player. The second player may either STEAL the first player’s tag for themselves, OR they can open a new tag. Play will continue until the final tag is opened. Steals will be limited to two times per tag per player.

When the swap is over, everyone will be holding a tag. Then, each person has to read three books in order to continue to the next swap. Swaps will be held quarterly. Each of the three books must be tagged a minimum of 5 times with the tag they are holding, and the lengths must be 200-350 pages, 350-500 pages, and over 500 pages. Those players who achieve the requirements, will get to participate in the swap the next quarter. The idea is to be left standing at the end having participated in all four swaps and 2) to submit the most popular tag each quarter as measured by the number of times stolen.

It will be imperative that each person must submit a unique tag. We will let people submit three tags at a time so they have a back up if their first submission is taken. The submissions will be evaluated on a first come, first serve basis.

Anita Pomerantz | 9281 comments PBT: A Space Odyssey

For this challenge, the goal is to travel to the furthest reaches of outer space. Okay, maybe not the furthest reaches, but as far as you can go. Each reader will have the chance to select a number of pages that will equate to 1 million miles. i.e. 100 pages (rocket) of reading will be equal to 1 million miles of travel or 50 pages (hovercraft) of reading equals 1 million or 500 pages (speed of light) of reading is equal to 1 million miles. We all would start at the sun, and the goal would be to get to the furthest planet you can, denoting each planet along the way. When reaching each planet, a challenge is revealed that each player needs to complete before moving on to the next planet (these would be prescribed in advance and revealed when the first person reaches the planet). Once the challenge is completed, the player may proceed to the next planet.

In addition, books completed that fit the tag will be awarded additional participation points for players participating in the Space Odyssey. There may be some other twists and turns i.e. your spacecraft is hijacked by aliens, and you must read a ransom book to return.

Anita Pomerantz | 9281 comments PBT Olympics

The summer Olympics are coming to Paris in 2024. For this challenge, each month will present a sport theme based on the sports competitions being held in Paris, and a reading activity will be created that dovetails with the sport.

For example, if the sport is Triathlon, you’ll need to complete three books in sequence - one long (cycling), one medium (running), one short (swimming).

Or, if the sport is Golf, that month you’ll need to attempt to beat par which may be determined by the number of books read for the tag the prior month divided by the number of active members.
Perhaps there will be a way to get a “hole in one”.

Each month will be a unique challenge with participation points awarded in different ways depending on the sport and the objectives. If you actually read a book that is about the sport in question, there will be bonus points awarded i.e. if you read a book about Tiger Woods during the golf challenge, that will be rewarded.

In addition, there will be the opportunity to capture medals by reading books set in participating countries. If you read a book that is set in one of the participating countries, you will accrue the medals as the country accrues medals in the actual event. These country reads will need to take place before the Olympics begin. i.e. if you read a book set in the United States, and the U.S. wins 4 silver and 3 gold medals, you will also win 4 silver and 3 gold medals. There will be participation points awarded for each medal accrued and a podium for the individual readers who garner the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places based on total medals accrued (with gold being worth the most, silver the second most, etc.)

Yes, I think so, but will investigate to be sure. I believe the International Booker is all translated fiction.

But yes, these are examples, and we'll make sure the categories are realistic.

I did a search real quick, and I do see quite a few awards specifically for translated literature.

That's how we did it last year, but it was a bit hard to tally using the Google form.

I may try to give you a set number of votes that you allocate across the options. So you could give one option all of your votes, OR you could split your votes amongst your favorites.

Do you have a preference about how you would like to vote?

And thank you for your kind comment!

I know there are awards for translated books, e.g. Warwick Women in Translation, which goes to the author. I saw a reference to a prize for a translator, but we’d have to google those.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11071 comments I didn’t read any of these ideas in detail yet, but i like the interesting tags idea. The devil is in the details though. If it relies only on chance, it’s a hard NO from me. If there are a lot of ways to gather extra choices that would help. If the winner was the person who read the greatest variety of tags - I would find that the most challenging and fun.

Read a book that represents or relates to any event that occurred (or occurs) in February.

It seems like it is way more rewarding for someone who reads a lot like me to pick the lowest level, say $100 and read 5 easy-to-find books than to have to read 3 books from more challenging categories. I do multiple challenges and I want everything I read for PBT to count elsewhere, also I want to be able to read from books I already own. You would think with over 500 books in that list, it wouldn't be a problem, but if the categories are too specific, I might have trouble finding something.

In general, I guess I don't like surprises, like choosing something before I know what it will entail. That would come up with the PB Deal also. But that might be just me.

My favorites are the Race Track and This Day in History.

Question: Will there be any requirements around the suggested "interesting or unusual tags?" Sometimes the lists for lesser used tags have very few books with 5 tags or more, meaning the choices of what to read would be pretty limited. Is there going to be a baseline of X number of books for the specific tag that are eligible to select from? Or, as another option, are the number of tags required going to be reduced (lower than 5) to allow more choices?

As an example, if I think the tag "mechanics" is interesting or unusual, and suggest it, there are only 24 books on this list that have 5 tags or more:
Mechanics: https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...

Follow-on question: Will we know the tags before we vote?

message 21: by Theresa (last edited Nov 09, 2023 07:53PM) (new)

Theresa | 15525 comments Once again I am awed at the breadth of options! And once again I have trepidations of managing most of these with my anticipated 2024 workload which has me thinking I might have to bow out of any of the year long challenges, especially where casual unplanned reading is required. 😥

But I am not there yet.... Some preliminary questions and comments:

1. Jeopardy - Yes there are awards for books in translation - they just get less press here. Booker has one, for example. I like those nominees and winners more often. Question: if I read the last paragraph correctly, I think you mean final jeopardy would be in January 2025, not 2024...and I N ade this same mistake a few days ago elsewhere.

2. Books with Friends - how are teams chosen? And the tag you are spelling is the tag voted as PBT monthly tag? My concern is that exerts heavy unfair influence on monthly tag vote. If not tied to PBT Monthly tag, then how is tag being spelled determined? Although based on the awarding of game points, it must beclinkrd to PBT Monthly tag. Do you need to read and review in spelling order? That seems much too arduous - so assume all will read at same time with goal that all finish in same month. I think this would be a bit harder to inject some creative color into universally.

3. 100 Tags - pickerwheel link not working. I kinda like this a lot! Zombies or Manga could each get its day! This really would have players reading other member's favorite tags. I assume that tags nominated would need to meet certain minimum requirements?

4. Lets Make PBDeal - what would a sample challenge look like? Would each be more or less equal in difficulty, or could they be in varying degrees of difficulty randomly. Would each challenge be a variation of the others?

5. Day in History - my sense of this is it would be most versatile for readers of different interests, genres, length, etc. Taking your 4th of July example, it could be a cozy mystery, alternative history, HF, actaly history, and so on.

6. Trade - again, assume there will be minimum tag requirements - including reasonable options for longer books (which might rule out manga and graphic novels, for example)

7. Space- kinda like this one - even though I am not sure I get the mile accrual equation. I assume a chart of miles needed to each planet will be provided? And are we counting Pluto which I seem to recall was kicked out of the Solar System some years ago? Not that I agree or approve that. Hint: I could eadily see a lot of color, fun, and antics here, even without Ursuula. Perhaps remind that this is not a SSF challenge but one that will suit evvery reading preference and skill level.

Sue | 2719 comments These are all really interesting! Thank you for putting in so much thought and creativity!

On the initial read-through, I like the Trade That Tag game. I love White Elephant gift exchanges and I think this is a neat idea.

If that ends up being one of our challenges, I'd suggest that everyone gets a one-time swap to use in case they get a tag they just hate.

I also think a "one and done" rule for each tag would be interesting. Once a tag has been included in the exchange it couldn't be nominated again. The tags that we'd see in the later half of the year would be fun to see and read for.

Theresa | 15525 comments Finishing my comments/questions:

8. Olympics - what a great idea! 😉 could it be designed to allow the occasional reading of a novella - say with track event like the 100 yard dash - or even shorter middle grade or children's chapterbooks - for an equestrian event? Perhaps also build in a book set in France in some way as well. Oh and this one could have a lot if fn color and interactive creativity added, especially in the summer when the Olympics actually competeing.

As for voting, I like the sPlitting vOtes option best I think where you are given a set number of votes to cast, then you can divide them up anny way you want up to a set number -i.e, up to 3 challenges - such as 30 votes total, you can divide and vote 10 for each of 3 options, or vote 5, 10, 15, orc15 each to 2 or use all 30 for just one.

I love the idea of finding a way to incorporate some shorter books. Maybe a short book represents a qualifying heat?

And in the other direction, it would be fun to include options for really long books to represent the marathon.

And some other random thoughts:
- First in a series or debut novels to represent new events making their debut in 2024. There are 5 new events including breakdancing of all things. My deepest apologies if we have any avid breakdancing fans here but is it really a sport?
- Books older than some set date to represent the events dropping out this year. There are two - karate and baseball.
- A book published in a year ending in "0" to represent the decathalon?
- I'd love to see extra points for books related in some way to the Olympics - a book about running, or a biography of a famous athlete, or a novel set in the Olympics in some way like a person building up their whole life for their shot to be an Olympic breakdancer.

Thanks for the catch on Jeopardy! A cut and paste issue right there.

On the Books with Friends, we would be using the monthly tag.

On the Trading one, there will definitely be some requirements - - like a minimum number of books tagged (probably 5000). We may lower the number of taggers needed for a book in relation to the number of books tagged i.e. If there are 5000 books, you may only need 2x tagged, but if there are 75,000, you'll need 5x. I need to give this more thought.

On Space, there will definitely be a more detailed set of instructions and miles will be provided between planets. I know about Pluto, but my old fashioned brain can't quite give it up.

I think we need a baseline for the number of books with 5 tags. I would think at least 200. There is a possibility for this that we would lessen the number of people using the tag to 4.

We will be soliciting tags from members, so I'm not sure if we can gather them in time for the vote.

As a language person, I think it's fascinating to see the order of countries at the opening ceremony. It is always alphabetical, but the names of the countries and the alphabets are different around the world. In countries like China, there is a different system that has to do with the number of strokes in the character (I think).

Anyway I also like the idea of some kind of international element in the game.

Nancy it would be similar but with historic dates.

Here are some examples for November:

Nov.1 - First all race vote in South Africa - A Conspiracy of Mothers
Nov. 6 Matthew Mconaughey's birthday - Greenlights
Nov 10 Neil Gaiman's Birthday -American Gods
Nov. 15 Sherman Burned Atlanta - The March
November 22, 1963 - Kennedy assassinated - 11/22/1963

I just checked out the new link on my computer and it works wonderfully. What a cool tool.

I didn't want to do dice again and I wanted to have the possibility to move a certain number of spaces.

I had forgotten all about the order of entry in the opening ceremonies depending on the spelling of the country in the host nation. For example, this is going to be in France and thus the USA, instead of being at the end --with U -- it will be Etats-Unis. Some of course are the same - Italy is Italie.

Not sure how that could be incorporated, but it's cool to be reminded. See what ideas swim to the surface.

That splitting of votes I described is an actual method of voting that's used in board of director elections frequently - it's spelled out in certificates of incorporation and by-laws. LMK if you decide to go with it and want to be sure the instructions you write up are clear. I've been explaining how to do it verbally to boards since about 1986... I got it down.

I specifically like it because it really allows you to weight your vote for one you just love, while still influencing others you like.

Holly R W | 3112 comments I am drawn to "This Day in History" and have a question. It sounds like the challenge will be to read 12 books throughout the year, one book corresponding to each month. At the moment, I'm unsure whether I want to commit to 12 books. Is there leeway for members who want to participate, but may want to go at a more relaxed pace in reading books?

As I read this, I want to be sure I have a couple of points clear:

1. Not every team member has to read each month - but can't slack off too much - will there be a minimum? Example: you have to read contribute to spelling at least 1 book in 8 different months.

2. Members can contribute by reading multiple books to spell but I assume there will be a minimum number of team members who must participate each month - like 3 of 5.

3. Team reading most books for tag - that's collectively how many books for that months tag each member reads, right?

4. Love the idea of game points with the reward only being at the end. Will it be team self-tracking? Any plan to monitor through the year?

I can really see teams having some fun with this within themselves and also with other teams. I think it could also be quite funny sometimes the contradiction of the book read to spell the tag vs. what the tag is.

My only serious reservation with this challenge is that the monthly tag voting will be overwhelmed by strategy for this challenge - which isn't fair to all those not participating - and it's already too prominent. Maybe change it that one of the tags that doesn't win is the one spelled? Mods flip a coin to pick which of the 2 non-winners is spelled?
