Do you guys finish one book before moving on to the next or, do you jump between different books? Which one is "better" in your opinion?

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) I have to say I got the habit of reading more than one book at a time from Nero Wolfe; I first read his stories in my teens and Archie mentions him reading three different books, chapter about. I tried it, and kept up with it.
If I have an actual paper book I will often finish it before I read another, but with ebooks it's easier to switch around. When I got my first ebook reader, I caught myself just tasting and switching all the time, like a kid let loose in a candy store. Where I live they tend to sell second hand books nearly as expensive as new so ebooks are the way to go.

Nicole | 3 comments I read one at a time, I like to fully focus on the story, characters, etc.

message 103: by Donna (new)

Donna | 5 comments I could read multiple books at a time in my youth but now that I am older it is much easier to be reading one fiction and maybe one nonfiction at most.

message 104: by Tanja (new)

Tanja | 315 comments Definitely jumping. I like the story breaks.

message 105: by Patti (new)

Patti Pasell | 19 comments About 10 books - one chapter at a time until the book grabs me then I finish it. There is usually three or four books a year that the first chapter grabs me and I have to read it all the way through usually without sleeping until done.

message 106: by Bob (new)

Bob | 1 comments I read 2-3 concurrently; History, Fiction, New Releases , besides daily newspaper, blogs, Substack, Patreon etc

Kristin Nolan | 2 comments I have several books I’m “reading” which translates to I wasn’t into it but I must finish it at some point lol.

Natasha | 136 comments I usually bounce between books. I have two started at the moment.

Ms.Sophia Firewall | 44 comments For me it depends: if I am reading a book which I started after finishing another, but have to wait for the release of the rest of the series, I stop reading it and finish the new release first & then continue with where I left the other book. However the intensity & captivation of the book plays an essential role in me finishing it of leave it halfway.

Vanick Kam | 2 comments I tend to find monotony in reading just one book at a time. Since I love reading from different genres, it helps me to not mix ideas and plots.

message 111: by Law (new)

Law Sometimes I simultaneously read multiple books.

message 112: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Lobel | 1 comments I usually have 2 or 3 at the same time but different genre's. Usually one educational, then a fiction or non-fiction, then another typically on health and exercise.

message 113: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Vallett (kval01) I'm a mood reader so I usually read a couple books and listen to an audio at the same time.

message 114: by Judy (new)

Judy Hall (goodreadscomjudy_hall) | 2 comments Most of the time I have multiple books going on. Usually, it's different formats: Print, e-book and audio, but sometimes I have multiples even of those. The different formats seem to help me keep the books sorted and, bonus, since the e-books are available through my phone, I'm never without a book.

Chris St Laurent | 120 comments Different books, different genres and different formats, always have audiobook going I drive a bit for work.

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) Chris wrote: "Different books, different genres and different formats, always have audiobook going I drive a bit for work."

I use audiobooks for boring household tasks like cleaning and ironing. They keep me company.

message 117: by Osato (new)

Osato I have come to embrace that I am a mood reader. If one book is starting to piss me off, I bookmark it for later and move to the next one. I'm currently reading 4 books now

David Clay | 7 comments I read two books at a time, and sometimes three.

Sally Chang (sallymacabre) | 111 comments I read a physical book at home and an audio book while at work. I average 8 books a month. Currently at 73 for the year so far!

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) Osato wrote: "I have come to embrace that I am a mood reader. If one book is starting to piss me off, I bookmark it for later and move to the next one. I'm currently reading 4 books now"

Exactly. Sometimes especially when I'm tired, I will get impatient with a book I'm reading and I want something else. Sometimes I want to be informed, other times I just want to be entertained.

message 122: by Janaki (new)

Janaki Jayadev | 17 comments It depends on my mood , If its a crime thriller and I get too overwhelmed (I do that a lot ) I change to another book . But basically one book at one time is better for me.

message 123: by Carson (new)

Carson (carsonsbookishdiary) I am ok with doing either. As long as the books aren't in the same genre I can normally read more than one (especially if one is a physical book and the other is an e-book). But I don't feel like one is a better way of reading than the other

message 124: by Mary (new)

Mary Jacobs | 3 comments I have always read several books at one time!

Clara 𐙚 🇵🇸 (clara17) | 272 comments I read one book at a time, I prefer it that way

message 126: by Denis (new)

Denis Wheller | 2 comments These days I read one book at a time, then write a review of it while starting to read the next one. I'll also be reading the Times, various magazines and scientific journals.

message 127: by Alexandre (new)

Alexandre I jump between different books, mostly when I get annoyed with one, but if I start a book and I really like I'm going to finish first before start another one. I think, for me, it's depends very much on the genre and the book length

message 128: by Aditi (new)

Aditi Raja | 3 comments Usually just one at a time, but recently while reading a 300-400 page book, I also read a short classic and have been listening to an audiobook at the same time. Up until this month I would have considered it sacrilegious!

message 129: by Billy (new)

Billy Reeves | 1 comments I prefer reading one book at a time but more often than not I have multiple books on the go, two up to six even, usually from different genres. It’s too common for me to start a book and then decide I’m in the mood for something else, so starting something different is preferable to not reading at all because I’m just not in the mood for that one book. It can be quite fun switching between books, but it does usually get to the point where one takes over and I end up focusing on that.

message 130: by Pisces51 (new)

Pisces51 I just started doing this, that is adding two books as "reading now". I like it because I can spend a decent amount of time on the "big read" like "Mary" the 400-pager I am struggling through now. I get tired and I can switch off and read Jon Athan's 2023 release "Shared By Two". So tonight I will read the next third of the "killer" book, and then finish the interesting extreme horror novel by Jon Athan.

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) I have learned not to put a book on GR as "Currently Reading"; it seems to be the kiss of death. After I do that, it tends to bog down into an unreadable morass.

message 132: by Emily (new)

Emily Glaspie | 11 comments I cannot actually say which one is better but I read and finish one book before starting the next but its because my brain physicaly will not let me read more than one at a time.

message 133: by Ferne (new)

Ferne Miller | 4 comments I read one right after the other. I can't seem to have a day without reading. Every once in a while I get a book (I am on a advanced reader team) that I have to read by a certain date, so I put down the book I'm reading and come back to it later. I can't read 2 books at once and keep them straight in my mind.

f4iryerims ౨ৎ ⋆。˚ | 47 comments i finish the book that i'm reading first because i don't like mixing two different worlds

message 135: by Diane (new)

Diane I can only read one book at a time as it confuses me otherwise...and that doesn't take much these days!!🤔🤪

message 136: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey Kuchma | 1 comments I usually have one book that I read at home, and a second that I read at work on my lunch breaks. On top of this, I frequently listen to audio books in the car during my commute. No problem jumping between them.

message 137: by Hemmie (new)

Hemmie Martin (hemmiemartin) | 4 comments I finish one book before reading the next, although I have already chosen the next book and put it on my bedside table. I can sometimes get confused watching two crime series on TV, so I imagine I would jumble the stories if I were reading two books at the same time. It would shorten my TBR pile, though!

message 138: by Destiny (new)

Destiny | 4 comments Some of the times, I don’t even finish a book before I start a new one. I open TikTok and the first thing I see is a book recommendation and I know that it’s over for the book I’m reading right now.

message 139: by Kimiko (new)

Kimiko | 23 comments I always am reading one physical book and one audio book (long commutes for work) and sometimes I will also read a kindle book. But always 2 at the same time. No problems remembering where I left off when I switch back and forth several times in the same day.

message 140: by Cookie M. (new)

Cookie M. (goodreadscomcookieknits) I read lots of books at the same time. I have over 20 going right now. I think I would be a channel surfer if I had a tv.

message 141: by ♡ jess ♡ (new)

♡ jess ♡ I usually am physically reading one book and listening to one audiobook. I really can't function if I try to jump between if they're in the same format lol

message 142: by Leticia🌻 (new)

Wow 20 books!!! That's awesome!

message 144: by Maddie (new)

this is SO SMART!

message 146: by David (new)

David Innes | 4 comments I am usually reading 5 books at a time. I never thought that would happen. It doesn't make sense to me because I like to do one thing at a time. But, a couple of decades ago I noticed that I was reading 3 books at a time. Then, eventually it became 5. It isn't intentional so I don't know what it means. It is just the way I read.

message 147: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Kay | 29 comments It depends. If I’m not making good progress and a book is tougher for me to get through I’ll read more than one so I don’t end up in a rut. If it’s a series I usually only focus on that series and won’t read anything else until I’m done so I can live in that world properly.

message 148: by Sophia (new)

Sophia | 6 comments I'm always reading multiple books at once and then decide spontaneously which one I'll read depending on my mood

message 149: by Sally (new)

Sally Chang (sallymacabre) | 111 comments I feel like reading multiple books makes me read faster.

message 150: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (readingwithstardust) | 4 comments I can usually keep track of one book per format -- one physical book, one audiobook, and one ebook/kindle book -- at a time. If I try to read more than that, I lose steam and often end up accidentally DNFing things and put myself into a rut. But if I focus on one thing at a time (per medium) I can maintain momentum.
