French Toast | 5 comments YA Fantasy possibly dystopian read between 2021-2023
Female protagonist who is part of a military system. She is at a funeral for a friend (best friend?) who was also part of this system when she gets into a fight.
Other details i remember
- Their uniforms were a single colour
- The fight is with another girl who makes a comment about her relationship with the friend who died (the other girl might have blamed her is some way for the death)
- The military system was prestigious to be a part of (It was elite).
- The main character was generally well respected in the community because she was exceptional even amongst the elite?
- The funeral was in a big hall and everyone was expected to be there as people didnt die very often in their system. The fight happen before the actual ceremony.
- After the fight the main character was reprimanded by her superior, she was given an assignment to be the body guard of a guy.
- The new assignment was one where she could not wear her uniform and that was a big deal. something like it was a point of pride to be able to wear the uniform.

I apologize for the vagueness of my post. I started reading this book at my local library one day and was not able to borrow it out. I only read a chapter or two but it has really stuck with me. I have gone back to my library but i have been unable to find/work out what book it was.

Pony Xaviors (ponyxaviors) | 388 comments I doubt it's this one because I don't remember the funeral part, but I'll give it a shot. Could it be "Legend" by Marie Lu?

David Añez | 418 comments Personally don't think it is Legend.

The funeral is for the brother, not a friend. There is no fight during the funeral, and she is not assigned as bodyguard but to lead the hunt for the presumed killer of the brother. Don't remember about the uniform being special in any way.

French, is there any romance? You might not know if you only read a couple chapters, though.

If there is romance, you might want to check this list. If not, you can browse this one. (it looks like they don't mix). The first list mostly is current military/technology, the latter one seems to be include fantasy and sci-fi as well, if that helps narrow it.

Google Books preview of Gameboard of the Gods by Richelle Mead - Juels's suggestion:
- There are different cover images.
Quotes from the book:
- Porfirio is dead. ... "You killed him," Kavi repeated. The indigo pip on her collar was an echo of Porfirio's." ... Kavi grabbed Mae's arm. ... The praetorians had a remarkable history of dangerous encounters, but brawling at a funeral probably wasn't in the book.
