Petra Jayne Green (midknightrose) | 14 comments For me, the worst book series I read so far this year was the angel trilogy. It was so boring, and for the first time in my life I was skim reading because of how bored I was. It was a rip-off of Hush Hush.

LilMisGrayBrisk | 566 comments I’ve rated three books 1 star this year:

A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham

Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch

Riot Baby by Tochi Onyebuchi

Maddie | 4 comments I am about halfway through Assistant to the Villain, and I would not be finishing it if it wasn't a book club read.

Bella(✨❤️Hopeful Romantic❤️✨) | 251 comments By far the Wereworld series by Curtis Jobling. Do not recommend.

message 5: by Nat (new)

Nat | 144 comments Micro by Richard Preston. That was NOT Michael Crichton’s finished product and all of his ‘discovered’ works should’ve been left alone, he spent years planning books and re-working over and over to achieve his stunning books. It was not meant to be handed over to some random person in an attempt to ‘finish’ his manuscripts.

TimeFliesAway | 121 comments Brynhildr in the Darkness 1 series. Too toxic, characters were flat and the story wasn't really progressing.

message 7: by Uchenna (new)

Uchenna Ifé | 3 comments If He Had Been with Me by Laura Nowlin. Not worth the hype, super predictable, and underwhelming ending.

message 8: by Jay (new)

Jay (jay09) | 8 comments The Essence of Nathan Biddle was probably the worst so far.

message 9: by Faith (new)

Faith Barbare | 1 comments Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I hated Lessons in Chemistry.

message 10: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments The first volume of Sara Donati's historical book series (Into The Wilderness) was absolutely riveting.
The following sequels were forgettable, because they no longer described the couple from the first book. It became very boring.

message 11: by Prajjwalika (new)

Prajjwalika Magnolia parks, daughter of the siren queen, believe me, to kill a kingdom, the secret history

message 12: by Malcolm (new)

Malcolm Frawley | 4 comments Rose McGowan's Brave, in spite of its relevance to the #metoo movement, did nothing for me.

message 13: by Alex (new)

Alex | 7 comments I read some terrible books this year, but the one that topped the most disappointed list is Lasher by Anne Rice

message 14: by Tina Miles (new)

Tina Miles (slrivergirl) | 11 comments Definitely Rosalie Oaks Lady Diviner series. I thought it would be like C N Holmberg’s The Paper Magician series but it’s just bad writing IMO. It’s got magic but with a tiny, horrid vampire who clings to the MC. That really put me off. Her prequel series was pretty good but the main series was not as good. Just my opinion of course.

I didn’t care for Rivers of London at all either.

Shan🌕🐾 | 2 comments oh gods, this is a very unpopular opinion, but i hated divine rivals by rebecca ross. it was so boring and too cosy for a war novel with gods fighting. the writing was pretty though.

Rissa (rissasreading) (rissasreading) | 178 comments the last heir to blackwood library

message 18: by Eva (new)

Eva (evahlin) The Perks of Being a Wallflower... I hated it.

message 19: by V (new)

V | 17 comments Probably Every Last Word by Tamera Stone. It was so boring I didn’t even finish it. Also there was a weird plot twist in it that was so out of left field.

message 20: by Bradley (new)

Bradley | 2 comments this is how you lose the time war. so stupid.

message 21: by Laureen (new)

Laureen | 19 comments All the Little Rain Drops by Mia Sheridan it was a free monthly Prime read - uggg! Sounded good, described as a thriller but it was really a romance. Can pick a good one every time 🤷🏻‍♀️

LilMisGrayBrisk | 566 comments Tina Miles wrote: "I didn’t care for Rivers of London at all either.

It was probably my most disappointing read of the year. I’ve heard such good things and I forced myself to finish it because I didn’t want to add to my long list of dnf’s this year.

message 23: by Brie (new)

Brie McKinney | 37 comments Between "pastors Eat Pwussy Too" and "Catcher and the Rye"....but there is still time left in 2023.

꧁٭ꨄ*✾➶➵➴Just Amy➴➵➶✾*ꨄ٭꧂ (amysjusttrying2read) it starts/ends with us
COHO in general
verity wasn't bad, but it's definitely overrated.

message 25: by Krista (new)

Krista Leanne | 3 comments The worst book so far I have read was NOS4A2 by Joe Hill. Too wordy, I actually got dizzy spells. 😝

message 26: by Gary (new)

Gary Allen, PhD (gallen6) | 21 comments If the first of the series is bad then I am certainly not going to waste my time with the others. 🙄

message 27: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 4 comments Oof it's still The Marriage Portrait for me

message 28: by Keisha (new)

Keisha Bruce (keishamae85) The Demon Tide: Laurie Forest
The Southern Book club's Guide to Slaying Vampires: Grady Hendrix
When Women Were Dragons: Kelly Barnhill
Books of Being: Retsim Laudividni
The Librarian of Crooked Lane: CJ Archer
The last 2 books of The Dragon Heart Legacy: Nora Roberts
These Violent Delights: Chloe Gong
Witch: Iain Rob Wright
Pale Court Duet: Liv Zander

message 29: by Evie (new)

Evie Mine was Her Secret Song by Mary Connealy. I’ve never disliked a book so much that I skipped half the book. I think most of the reason I didn’t like it was because I had just read the first two books in that series and they were basically the same thing just with different main characters.

message 30: by Sam (new)

Sam K (zutara123) | 251 comments Normal People by Sally Rooney. I was close to not even finishing it. I found it very boring and repetitive.

message 31: by Anne Marie (new)

Anne Marie | 9 comments The worst book I have read this year is Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll. If there was one more reference to her proximity to the Main Line in this book, I was ready to scream because unless you live in specific counties in Pennsylvania, you have no idea what that even means. It was just another way to say this girl who was poor was able to go to a really fancy and expensive school so she did not fit in.

message 32: by Sadie (new)

Sadie | 8 comments I have quit a few actaully. i have read a ton this year but some of the books just didnt hit right.
- Liar by Justin Larbalestier
- Forever for a Year by B.T Gottfred
- Fake by Donna Cooner

message 33: by Emily (new)

Emily I tried reading Sick Fux and absolutely could not finish it.

message 34: by Holly (last edited Nov 07, 2023 08:42AM) (new)

Holly Cope-Lynn I just finished Where Ivy Dares to Grow by Marielle Thompson and only gave it one star. It was completely predictable with strangely formal writing style being that it is set, mostly, in 1994. The narrator spoke/thought as if she were in 1884. I regret that I read it all the way through - I kept hoping it would surprise me.

Also, I recently read Swamplandia! by Karen Russell. Also, one star, but I wish I could have given it zero. This book made me angry for weeks over how much I disliked it, how it was misadvertised as magical realism, and the fact that it was nominated for a Pulitzer. It was an awful book, full of mentally ill people who do awful things to each other, and the ending seemed lazy and rushed to wrap it all up in a neat little bow. Completely unsatisfying.

message 35: by Cathy (new)

Cathy | 4 comments The worst book I have read this year, and ever, was Lolita. That is the most vile and disgusting book, I have ever read. I started this book in 2022 and it took me until this year to finish it.

message 36: by Sydney the (new)

Sydney the Book Fairy | 8 comments The Atlas Six. It might very been better if the author wrote normal sentences instead of trying to use big words all the time. WORD SALAD

message 37: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Belec | 1 comments Currently, Fall of giants by Ken Follett

message 38: by jacquelyn payne (new)

jacquelyn payne | 5 comments Gary wrote: "If the first of the series is bad then I am certainly not going to waste my time with the others. 🙄"

Well of course time is short and there are to many books why waste time on something already proven to be a lost cause.

message 39: by Mike (new)

Mike | 5 comments This year's winner is James Ellroy's - The Enchanters.

message 40: by Meg (last edited Nov 09, 2023 08:14AM) (new)

Meg | 23 comments Assistant to the Villain
I have this on my list please post if it sucks as I will delete it, too many books to waste time on meh!

message 41: by jacquelyn payne (new)

jacquelyn payne | 5 comments The Warning by: AJ Willis I know some folks liked it but not me his female characters are always weak and not relatable. The story was predictable no surprises. I did finish it and even read another of his books feel you should always give an author a chance but I did not like that book much either for the same reason his lack of understanding women.

message 42: by Nadia (new)

Nadia Binte Hakim (nadiabintehakim) | 3 comments for me, worst book was if he had been with me. i was really expecting this book will shatter me. but nuh uh such a disappointment.

message 43: by Carson (new)

Carson (carsonsbookishdiary) I think the absolute worst one so far was Dead Collections by Isaac Fellman, there was just so much wrong with that book it was infuriating.

my other 1 stars have been:
- The After School Nightmare manga by Setona Mizushiro
- Teen Killers Club by Lily Sparks
- There Will Be Lies by Nick Lake

message 44: by Schvenn (new)

Schvenn | 18 comments Agent 101, a true account of a so-called spy master during WWII. If the book itself is to be believed, Allen Dulles accomplished absolutely nothing, nor did his wife or mistress, who add absolutely nothing to the already wearisome history of nothingness, the inclusions of which only serve to bolster some misogynistic agenda.

I hated it so much I sought out every major location for rating the book to give it the lowest possible rating on each of them, even if I don't frequent those other resources. :) (Yeah, it was kind of petty.) ;)

message 45: by Raz (new)

Raz | 11 comments I tried to read The Bride Stripped Bare earlier this year, and it is one of the few books that I have abandoned. Normally even if I'm not into a book I feel compelled to see it through anyway, but this was just SO pretentious I decided to do me a self-care and take it down the community library to inflict on someone else.
