SOLVED. 15+ y/o Space Sci-fi about humans and a race of 6 legged aliens that are secretly observing an alien planet of 4 armed aliens thats get attacked and caught and held prisoner in their own ship.

I'm looking to reread a book that I read in high-school almost 20 years ago. I remember parts of the beginning of the book, but nothing else.

The plot, from what I remember, was about humans that were observing an alien planet where the aliens could travel to space, but hadn't quite figured out FTL travel. The humans were accompanied by another alien species with 6 legs that could only communicate through a translator they wore as a collar. They were discovered by the observed aliens and attacked. 1 human and 1 alien were captured.

The story is told by perspectives of the captured human and alien and 1 of the scientists from the observed aliens. I believe the observed aliens were 4 armed humoids that didn't need to sleep other than to hibernate.

About the only other thing I can remember is how they described the "FTL Drive" the humans used worked by opening up a wormhole in front of the ship that it had to fly through.
