Lindsay Kelly | 286 comments I tracked my achievements in 2022 and 2023 so I want to continue this in 2024.

Each is book is only used once in each challenge but can be used in other challenges (eg can be in main challenge and side challenge). However books cannot overlap between the ATY Main Challenge and my ATY Rejects Challenge.

I'm planning to read the ATY 2024 list and 52 BC 2024 lists in month order. Due to some books overlapping between the 2 challenges it will mean I read some books in advance but I think in general it should make it easier to see how much is left to complete.

I'm planning on reading 1 book from a country of the world and 1 book from a USA state each month. Oh and also at least 1 book from an ongoing series each month...so I'm also going to add a summary for the end of each month to see how I'm doing with these plans. Hopefully there'll be a lot of overlap so I don't have to read a million books each month to keep up, lol!!!

Overall progress for 2024 as at 30 June 2024
ATY 2024 Main Challenge: 34/52
ATY Rejects Challenge: 36/57
ATY 2024 Side Challenges: Winter, Spring & June all completed

The 52 Book Club 2024 Main Challenge: 31/52
The 52 Book Club 2024 Side Challenges: February, April & May completed, Summer ongoing.

Book Challenge by Erin 20: 19/20 main & bonus challenge

Read a book from every country of the world: 15/24 (ongoing total: 65/209)
Read a book from every state of USA/Canada: 3/12 (ongoing total: 38/64)
Read a book from every county of the UK: 5/12 (ongoing total: 36/95)

Read from ongoing series: achieved each month

A to Z title challenge: 22/26 (aim to fill as I'm going along then pick up any missing letters towards the end of the year).

Monthly Buzzword: 5/12

Overall aim is for 100/120 books over the year, so 8-10 per month which I think is very realistic. - I am currently on 78 books, which is 13 per month, so definitely probably going to read 140 books over the whole year.

So we'll see how I get on as this seems like a lot now I've written it down!!!!

For February I'm going to check my planned reads and see if any of them achieve the USA/Canada aims, so I don't fall 2 months behind on this!

I achieved all my aims except for finishing the BCBE 20 Challenge, however, I am working through the final 2 books currently. Also, I read both books from The Every Series which was good. But started another 3 series (Meru, The Marquess House Saga & Dune) which is definitely not helping me to reduce the number of series' that I'm working on LOL

What do I think of my June progress: I had a family illness then bereavement this month, so I pretty much abandoned all my reading plans and just comfort read murder mystery books. I'm really surprised that I managed to achieve so many of my goals as I didn't expect to. This is also my highest reading of the year (15 books) as I definitely been reading to escape what's been going on in my life. Although I only had 1 x 5 star read, I had loads of 4 star books.

The new BCBE 21 challenge starts on 1st July so I expect I'll stick closer to my plans.

I read a lot of 4 star books, and started a lot of new series. In August I'm going to try to finish BCBE 21, and hopefully some other targets too.

x A to Z title challenge: 0/26 (by end of year)

√ Monthly buzzword: 'like in title': achieved

What do I think of my August progress: total 13 books - I was hoping to finish my final book for BCBE but I should finish that in the next few days so I'll have 2 months for the second round picks. I started a lot of new series (again!!!) so I need to start working on finishing some series. Maybe finishing a series a month should be a goal for next year. Overall I read a good variety of books and had 3 x 5 stars and 7 x 4 stars so I really enjoyed the books I picked.

September 2024

x ATY 2024 Main Challenge: 3/4
√ ATY Rejects Challenge: 6/4

x Read a book from every county of the UK: 0/1

√ Read from ongoing series: 5/1 - The Alloy Era, Harry Potter (Mina Lima), In Death, Red Rising & Robert Langdon

x A to Z title challenge: 0/26 (by end of year)

x Monthly buzzword: senses: not achieved

What do I think of my September progress: This was a great reading month, I read 18 books and most were 4 stars. I read from 5 ongoing series, and started 3 new series. I caught up on a lot of books I'd picked for previous months but not gotten round to reading, so I only have 5 'outstanding' picks that I still need to get to. I've also picked my reading for October and November, including doing another buddy read in October. I also just signed up for Kindle Unlimited so I've got that for the next 3 months.

October 2024

x ATY 2024 Main Challenge: 3/4
√ ATY Rejects Challenge: 5/4
√ ATY 2024 Side Challenges: 4/4

√ The 52 Book Club 2024 Main Challenge: 5/4

x Book Challenge by Erin 21: 3/4

√ Read a book from every country of the world: 4/2 - Nicaragua, Monaco, Trinidad & Angola
x Read a book from every state of USA/Canada: 0/1
x Read a book from every county of the UK: 0/1

√ Read from ongoing series: 5/1 - Outlander, Hunger Games, Beartown, The Maid & Red Rising

√ A to Z title challenge: 3/26 (by end of year)

√ Monthly buzzword: relationships: Daughter of Fire

What do I think of my October progress: I read 19 books which was great. I decided to try to read some of the books I think will be nominated in the Goodreads Choice Mystery/Thriller awards which take place in Nov/Dec, so that was a lot of my reading for the month. I also managed to read all 10 books I'd planned for the month. I had 4 x 5 star books and really enjoyed my reading. I'm looking forward to my new goals for next year and can't wait to do more planning!!!

---------------------------
November 2024

x ATY 2024 Main Challenge: 1/4
x ATY Rejects Challenge: 1/4
√ ATY 2024 Side Challenges: 4/4

x The 52 Book Club 2024 Main Challenge: 1/4
x The 52 Book Club 2024 Side Challenge: 2/4

x Book Challenge by Erin 21: 0/2

x Read a book from every country of the world: 0/2
√ Read a book from every state of USA/Canada: 2/1 - Missouri & Washington DC
√ Read a book from every county of the UK: 1/1 - Dorset

√ Read from ongoing series: 5/1 - Outlander, Prison Healer, Robert Langdon, Lincoln Lawyer & In Death

√ A to Z title challenge: 1/26 (now fully completed)

x Monthly buzzword: only: not completed

What do I think of my November progress: I read more books this month than any other month this year (22 books). Lots of these were for the Goodreads Choice Mystery/Thriller category, this meant that I didn't achieve many of my goals for this month. But I did read a lot of books that I really enjoyed.

I have made a list of all the books I would need to read in December to hit all my goals for this month, which would be 19 books. So that would be my joint 2nd highest reading month of the year, so its unlikely I'm going to achieve everything...but I am on holiday from 25/12 to 31/12 which will give me more time to read. So we'll just need to wait and see how the year finishes!!!

Lindsay Kelly | 286 comments DNF's

1. The Reef by Nora Roberts - Read a few pages and decided this is not the type of Nora book that I enjoy. I'm surprised it's taken until June for me to have my first DNF of the year but I have been much more selective of which books I'm reading.
2. The Horse Dancer - this was a free book on Audible and I thought it would be good for my rejects challenge as it has a horse on the cover. I listened to 30 mins then DNF'd as I was just not interested in it.
3. Seeing Further: Ideas, Endeavours, Discoveries and Disputes — The Story of Science Through 350 Years of the Royal Society - This was just so dry...I tried a couple of chapters and I would've needed to slog through this, and I am just not making myself slog through a book.
4. The House at Pooh Corner by A A Milne - I was listening to this on audiobook and the sound effects were really annoying me so I decided to give up on it. Although this is a classic series, it's not grabbing me just now so I'll not be continuing with it.

Nice one! I watched the video for this too. Seems interesting, but I probably won't do it personally. Curious to see how other will choose the books for the prompts though.

I'm *hoping* I can use books I've already got picked out to read especially for the first few months.

Lindsay Kelly | 286 comments Potential plans for 2025

1) ATY 2025 Main Challenge - definitely doing this
2) ATY - My rejects challenge - I had 57 rejects this year and this was too hard to achieve and took focus away from my other aims. Next year I may limit this to 1 reject prompt from each vote, so likely to be about 20 which seems like a better amount.
3) ATY Anniversary list - loved voting on these
4) ATY Side Challenges - maybe I enjoyed these but maybe this is overstretching myself
5) The 52 Book Club Main Challenge - definitely doing this
6) The 52 Book Club Side Challenges - maybe I enjoyed these but maybe this is overstretching myself BUT these are in the 52BC Journal so most likely I will do them
7) Book Challenge by Erin - love this
8) My own challenge - Read a book from every country of the world - lots of countries still to read from MIGHT combine this with the Book Girls Guide Challenge so I've got an 'area' focus for each month
9) My own challenge -Read a book from every state of USA & Canada - GOING to combine this with the Book Girls Guide Challenge so I've got an 'area' focus for each month and suggestions for the 'harder' areas
10) My own challenge - Read a book from every county of the UK - This has been hard to do so I think this will be a back-burner task with no targets for the month/year
11) My own challenge - Read from ongoing series - In 2025 I am going the aim to FINISH a series each month. I have 10 series that only need 1 book to finish them so this is definitely achievable
12) A to Z surname challenge - should be able to do most of this with my reading so will probably only need to plan a few books for the harder letters.

Lindsay Kelly | 286 comments Goodreads Choice 2024 mystery/thriller nominations

For the last few weeks I've been trying to read the books I thought would be nominated in the Goodreads choice awards. The 2 books I've enjoyed the most didn't make the list The Examiner - which I thought was unlikely to be on the list and Kill for Me, Kill for You - which I thought would be nominated but wasn't.

Also, I it was a big surprise that The Housemaid Is Watching was not nominated after the previous book in the series WON last year.

So, I'm wanting to read more of the nominations before making my vote, as I've enjoyed other books but not loved them.

At the time that the top 20 was announced I'd read 8/20, I have access to another 5 books, and another 3 I'm interested in but I don't have easy access to. So I'll see how many of them I can get through before I need to vote. Hopefully I'll find a gem and hopefully none of the 4 that I'm not interested in reading make the top 10...otherwise I might need to read them too before making my final vote!!!

This is what I've read from the top 20 so far:
First Lie Wins 4/5 stars
The Mystery Guest 4/5 stars
We Solve Murders 3/5 stars
Home Is Where the Bodies Are 3/5 stars
Listen for the Lie 4/5 stars
The Midnight Feast 3/5 stars
Middle of the Night 4/5 stars
The Heiress 4/5 stars
The Boyfriend 5/5 stars - I know some people hate Frieda McFadden's writing but I love it. This is my only 5 star book so far out the nominations so it's looking like this might be my vote.
How to Solve Your Own Murder by Kristen Perrin - read November 2024 - 3/5 stars
Darling Girls by Sally Hepworth - read November 2024 - 5/5 stars - OK so this one has taken first place for me so far. I was so gripped by how real the experiences of the girls were.

Round 2 has now been announced and there is only 1 book that's in the top 10 that I've not read that I'm interested in. I'm disappointed as Darling Girls didn't make it through to the top 10, so at the moment my vote in round 2 would be The Boyfriend.

The Teacher by Freida McFadden - read November 2024 - 4/5 stars

My vote in Round 2 was for The Boyfriend after reading 8 of the 10 books.

The winner was God of the Woods - which I did not read as I wasn't interested in the summary.

After the winner was announced I also read:
The Last One at the Wedding by Jason Rekulak - read December 2024 - 4/5 stars

So my final total was 13/20, my favourite of the top 20 was Darling Girls (which came 13th) and my favourite in the top 10 was The Boyfriend (which came 3rd).

There are another 3 of the books which I'm interested in reading, so I might read them in 2025.

What do I think of my December progress: I managed to read all the books I'd planned to read for the year (except for The Frozen River which is not available in the UK). I was focusing on finishing my yearly challenges and I'm pleased with how I've done. This has ended up being the month where I have read the most books of the whole year, and I've read a huge variety of different genres. Also I had 6 x 5 star reads, which was my 2nd highest for the year. Overall a great month of reading.

x Read a book from every county of the UK: 6/12 (ongoing total: 31/95) - I will keep working on this but I'm not setting a target for 2025

√ Read from ongoing series: achieved each month

√ A to Z title challenge: 26/26

x Monthly Buzzword: 10/12 - not doing in 2025

At my mid year check in I thought I would achieve 140 books over the year however I ended up on 185!!! I think this was boosted by me reading the 13/20 of the 2024 Goodreads Choice Mystery/Thriller nominees. I'm going to do this again in 2025 as it was good fun.

I am very pleased with my achievements towards my goals for this year. 2 of the goals I didn't achieve (Reading 12 books from counties of the UK and Monthly Buzzword challenge) I am not going to do in 2025. The other goals I didn't fully achieve (Book Challenge by Erin & Read 12 books from states of the USA/Canada) I really enjoyed working on, so I'm keeping these as goals for 2025.

I continued to track my progress on my series...but I didn't have a goal for this in 2024, so I'm in the middle of 47 series just now (not including ones I'm upto date on, have completely finished or DNF'd). So, in 2025 I'm setting myself a goal of finishing/getting up to date with 12 series & keeping up to date with the 8 series that I'm currently up to date on.

I really enjoyed pre-picking 10 books I was going to read for each month, so I'm planning to keep doing that as I think it helped me keep on track and I can 'free-read' once these are done each month.

Overall 2024 was a tough year and reading has definitely helped me get through it. I'm pleased with the variety of books I've read and how much I've enjoyed reading this year. I also confirmed that mystery/thriller books are my comfort reads and I reach for these when I need something which takes me out of my life. 2024 was not a year I'd want to repeat...but my reading was good!!!!
